Course Description: Starts in the Wachusett Parking lot, travels down the hill into lot 3 and exits out on to Rte 140. Then turns on to private dirt roads and a lakeside community, where it crosses the lake via bridge before returning to paved roads and back up the entrance road to Wachusett. Course Conditions: The run will be a combination of paved surfaces along with off-road terrain consisting of dirt and perhaps wet and muddy conditions. Appropriate footwear should be worn to avoid injury. Course Rules: All runners should stay to the side of the road indicated. Please follow volunteer and Police directions when crossing roads, especially Rte. 140. You are permitted to pass when it is safe to do so. While every effort will be made to prevent vehicle traffic from interfering with the course, please be aware that automobiles will be on the move during the race. When returning to the transition area, all runners must pass by the checkpoint where a race volunteer will confirm your bib number and a timing mat will pick up your chip time. *Disobeying traffic rules, skipping any part of the course or failing to check-in at the transition area will result in immediate disqualification. Course Description: The bike leg will turn right out of the main parking lot on to Mile Hill Road/Mountain Road. A challenging hill awaits competitors on Mountain Road, bringing riders past the Wachusett State Reservation around mile 1. Riders will then take a sharp, steep uphill right hand turn on Westminster Road. A gorgeous view of the windmills can be seen as riders bear left on Westminster passing by Stage Coach Trailhead. Riders will stay right on Westminster at the intersection with Greene Road and pass Harrington Farm immediately on the right. The Princeton/Westminster town line sees the start of the dirt road, approximately 5 miles into the ride. Riders are now traveling on West Princeton Road. Unpaved conditions extend approximately 1.2 miles. After returning to paved surfaces for a 1/2 mile, riders will take a sharp right-hand turn on to Bolton Road 6.7 miles in and will hit a very steep downhill section of road as they proceed down Bolton. Riders will turn right on the Wachusett access road and return to the Wachusett parking lot for the transition to the ski leg. Course Conditions: The majority of the course is paved road. Approximately 1-1.5 miles of the course is on uneven dirt road that may not likely be suitable for road bikes. The bike you choose to complete the race is your choice. We strongly recommend tires with a solid grip rather than smooth road tire. Course Rules: Bike helmets MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES while on the bike course. Pass to the left and give verbal notification to the rider being overtaken. Cyclists are asked to stay to the right side of the road for the duration of the ride. All turns are right-handed and there are no street crossings. Roads are not closed to vehicle traffic, so please abide by standard rules of the road. Riders must slow down coming into the steep downhill section on Bolton Road. Failure to abide by this may result in disqualification. Page 5
Course Description: The idea for the hike leg of Up, Down & Around is simple: get to the summit as fast as you can, any way you choose except for the lift or anything with a motor! Hike, snowshoe, skin, run or climb, it s your choice. The final trail used tor this portion of the Challenge will be determined as we get closer to the event. This is for safety reasons. As of now, we plan to send hikers up 10th Mountain Trail, passing under the Polar Express lift for much of the journey so adoring fans can cheer competitors on along the way. Course Conditions: Expect a mix of snow, ice and perhaps some dirt patches. Wachusett received and made a lot of snow this season so base depths should hold up through the end of the season. Course Rules: Hikers must stay to the designated side of the trail. Trails may be open to skiers and riders. Individual competitors (Mountain Men & Mountain Women) must carry all gear needed for the ski race leg to the top of the mountain during the summit climb. Gear backpacks are allowed. Page 6
Course Description: The Ski/Snowboard Run will be a top-to-bottom course set up with control gates to control speed but it will not be a gated race course. The course will be timed and competitors will be able to ski immediately when ready. While a final determination on the trail used for the run will be made closer to the event day, for now, competitors should expect to head down Conifer trail, which is a rated a blue ski trail. Course Conditions: It all depends on the conditions that day! Expect everything from hard-packed surfaces to wet, heavy snow. Wachusett s Mountainside Ski Shop is available for last-minute tuning services should conditions change. Arrive early enough to get your gear touched up. Course Rules: ALL ski leg racers MUST WEAR A HELMET on the course. No helmet = disqualification. Skiers and snowboarders are both welcome to compete in this leg. Spotters will be on course. Skipping the control gates will result in 2 minutes added to total time. Timing will be used and your ski race time will be added to your other three legs to get your final time and determine winning teams/individuals. Page 7
