Rehearsal/Recital Hints 5. Extra Everything! Now is not the time to get a run in your tights without a backup. Have at least one extra pair on hand of each color that you need. Also, bring extra hair gel, hair nets, bobby pins and hair spray with you. A few less obvious things that have come in handy for others include: - Baby wipes/shout wipes (to fix makeup mistakes or dirty hands) - Baby powder (for itchy costumes) - Safety pins (for emergency costume repairs) - Clear nail Polish (to repair minor holes/runs in tights when there isn t time to change them) - Tylenol, Advil, Motrin or your pain reliever of choice - Extra contact lenses (because the show can t be stopped to search the stage for one) - Band-Aids (the invisible kind stage is not the place for Sponge Bob Band-Aids) 6. Dressing Rooms: Please respect others space and property in the dressing rooms, and coach your children to do likewise. More time will be spent in the dressing rooms than on stage or in the auditorium, so let s all do our best to make it a pleasant place. Make sure you label everything you bring into the dressing room. 7. The Director: Please respect the decisions Christy has made regarding rehearsal and recital. She has done this for several years and has developed a plan of action that works best for all involved. If you have questions or concerns, please see her BEFORE rehearsal day. 8. Have Fun: Parents tell us that once they get over the initial uncertainty, they actually love the dress rehearsals and recital the fun, the excitement, and the talent. You are welcome to take all the pictures you d like and to capture the rehearsals on video tape. (If you get some good photos, please share them with us for th e CDE web site!) Recital FAQ s 1. Why do we pay a recital fee and pay for tickets? a. There are a lot of expenses associated with putting on a recital, i.e. decorations, props, auditorium rental, staff fees, etc. Tickets are charged through JCC. Great performances costs thousands of dollars and without collecting a fee, CDE would not be able to provide a wonderful showcase of student talent! 2. Why are dancers required to wear make-up on stage? a. Dancers wear make-up on stage to enhance their facial features, which can be washed out under the stage lights. 3. Why are only backstage volunteers allowed backstage? a. For the safety of the dancers. It would be difficult to track whether each child is going with the proper adult if hundreds of parents were backstage. 4. Can I video/photograph my child on stage? a. Videotaping will not be allowed during the Recital. We have a professional videographer at the auditorium to capture the performance in high quality. DVD order forms will be available in the lobby at the studio. Non-flash photography is okay on recital night. The flash can make it dangerous for the dancers on stage. Video cameras are allowed at dress rehearsal. 5. Does my child have to stay for the entire show? a. Dancers will be released to their parents at the end of the show. All dancers return to the stage for a final bow. All the dancers have worked very hard and equally deserve to have a full audience to watch their performances.
Recital FAQ s 6. Can my child sit with me in the audience when they have finished dancing? a. All dancers must remain in their dressing rooms for the entire show. Letting dancer s sit with their families makes for a chaotic situation in the audience and the dancer could miss the finale. This is also for the safety of our dancers, they will be checked in at the beginning of the show and checked out at the end to make sure they are being released to the correct adult. 7. Will there be someone in the dressing room with my dancer? a. Yes! Instructors and parent volunteers will be stationed in every backstage room to supervise dancers. We are asking that you not bring crayons, markers, or colored drinks to the backstage area. You are welcome to send electronics for your dancer to use backstage (please label them). 8. If I volunteer to help backstage, will I still see my child dance? a. Yes! Volunteers help dancers get ready in the dressing rooms then escort groups to the backstage area. You can either watch your dancer from backstage, or go back around and watch from the audience. After the group has finished, the backstage runner will return them to their dressing room where the volunteer will meet them. * Parent volunteers will receive an $11 credit to your account (equal to one recital ticket) and 1 free CDE shirt. Volunteers must stay in the dressing rooms for the entire show. A sign-up for volunteers will be posted in the lobby in March (we only need 8-10 parents per show). Rehearsal/Recital Hints 1. Accessories: Use a ZipLoc bag to hold any accessories (hairpiece, gloves, etc.) for each dance. If you have four dances, use four different bags. Use a Sharpie to write the name of the dance on the bag, plus a list of each accessory item. The list serves as a checklist before you leave home for the recital, when getting dressed, and when repacking items after each dance is complete. 2. Stay Calm: Calm begins with the parents. Let s all try to be a model of calm and keep the volume and urgency levels set on low all week. There is no challenge that can t be worked out. We always find a way, and it s an easier road if we all remain calm along the way. 3. Clothing Rack: Reasonably durable clothing racks with wheels can be purchased at stores such as Wal*Mart. If your child is in several dances and/or plans to dance again next year, it s a smart investment that keeps you organized, prevents wrinkles, and provides a little dressing privacy. Hang costumes on the rack in the order they will be needed in the show. 4. Make-up: Some prefer to wait until they get to the dressing room to apply the makeup. You can save time by doing the hair at home, but you may wish to leave the makeup until you arrive. Get the right makeup that you are directed to get. Makeup is as important to the look as the costume. You wouldn t send your child onto the stage wearing a different costume than everyone else just because you think a certain color looks better than the chosen costume. Why do it with makeup? Everyone should strive to look as identical as possible costume, makeup and hair.
