Mandatory Leader Trainings The Southeast Area has built a successful leader recruiting and retention program by providing mandatory leader trainings every two years. In an effort to maintain a strong program and build leaders for tomorrow, all organizational and project leaders are required to attend a training. This year s training topics include, Building Welcoming 4-H Clubs, Ages & Stages, Meeting Activity Ideas, Liability, Parliamentary Procedure, and Project Meetings. We are offering training in six of the counties, so you can select any of the trainings to attend. The remaining dates are: Wednesday, February 15th - Otero County - Event Center/Fairgrounds, Rocky Ford - 6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16th - Bent County - Extension Office, Las Animas - 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 22nd - Kiowa County - Courthouse Meeting Room, Eads - 6:00 p.m. Monday, February 27th - Baca County - Minnick Building/Fairgrounds, Springfield - 6:00 p.m. If there are extraordinary circumstances that prevent you from attending any of the trainings, contact your county s Colorado State University Extension Office to find out how to do a one-on-one leaders training with the Extension Agent or an online module. These training requirements must be completed prior to March 31st, 2017. Please remember, this is required of all 4-H leaders in the Southeast Area and if you do not attend, then you will not be acknowledged as a 4-H leader, nor covered under the insurance. We look forward to working with each of you in the coming year. Add/Drop Deadline Members wishing to either add or drop a project have until April 15th to do so. New Southeast Area Website The Southeast Area Extension has a new website. Check out h p://sea.extension.colostate.edu/ for Southeast Area related informa on.

4H Online Email Blasts From time to time the State office will be sending emails directly to the 4-H members. It is the easiest and most effective way to communicate important State events and requirements. We know that not everyone particularly enjoys the extra emails and there have been requests to be unsubscribed. It is important to know that if you do that, you would not receive any re-enrollment emails or information the County office sends directly to you. Please do not unsubscribe. Meat Quality Assurance All 4-H members in breeding and market beef, sheep, swine, goats, poultry, rabbits, dairy animal and horse projects must complete Meat Quality Assurance training the first two years they show livestock, and then again when they change age divisions. You may attend any MQA in the area; be sure to sign in and complete the quiz so your county will know you attended. The hands-on learning stations will be used again with changes in the stations. This is a come and learn-by-doing training that will take approximately an hour to complete. Parents and leaders are strongly encouraged to attend. Plan to attend one of these sessions: March 16th - Cheyenne County - 4 to 6 p.m. - Cheyenne County Fairgrounds Community Building March 17th - Bent County - 9:30-11:30 a.m. - McClave School Cafeteria March 20th - Baca County - 6-8:30 p.m. - Baca County Fairgrounds Minnick Building March 21st - Prowers County - 5-7 p.m. - Granada Gymnasium March 22nd - Otero/Crowley County - 5-7 p.m. - Ark Valley Fairgrounds March 23rd - Kiowa County - 5-7 p.m. - Kiowa County Fairgrounds Community Building Meat Judging Have you ever wondered where on an animal the steaks you eat at home come from? Livestock Judging Have you ever wondered what the judges were looking for as you watched a livestock show? Would you like to make better decisions when selecting your 4-H livestock project animal? 4-H Livestock Judging is an exciting way to learn more about livestock selection and improve your speaking and reasoning skills while having fun and making new friends. Being involved in all aspects of 4-H offers lifetime benefits that really do contribute to a person s knowledge and abilities as an adult. Far beyond learning how to accurately evaluate both breeding and market animals, judging strengthens public speaking abilities and gives youth more confidence in their decision making skills. Additionally, like other competitive youth programs, there are scholarship opportunities that allow graduates to attend junior and senior colleges of their choice to compete on livestock judging teams. During a contest, youth rank several classes of four head of livestock including beef, sheep, swine and goats. Individually, each contestant analyzes the animals and decides how he or she thinks they should be placed and then marks their card accordingly. Following the placing of the classes, the youth then give oral reasons for their placing to a judge. Livestock judging members improve their analytical, reasoning, speaking and communication skills, all of which are valuable tools they can use throughout their entire life. At contests and workouts, members meet and make new friends they will keep for a lifetime. We have leaders interested in helping/ coaching youth. If you are interested, contact your extension agent to express your interest. The sooner the better, as practices will begin early in March. Horse Judging Practice Horse Judging Coach, Trish Leone will be starting practices with an orientation on February 8 th at 6:30 pm at the Otero Extension Office. Regular practices will be held at 6:30 pm on the first and third Wednesdays starting in March. Horse judging is a fantastic opportunity for all youth involved with or interested in horses to build their knowledge, reasoning skills, and public speaking abilities. Catch-a-Calf Program Crowley County 4-Hers, Kallie Stovall and Tach Brewer, had successful Catch-A -Calf experiences. They participated in the Catch-A-Calf program at the 2016 National Western Stock Show. After successful catches, they received their calves in May, cared for them, and then took them to show at the 2017 National Western Stock Show. At the stock show, Kallie received 6 th in the Market Class, 14 th in Production, and 6 th in Showmanship. Tach received 5 th in the Market Class and 8 th in Showmanship. This year, there was one successful Otero County 4-Her that participated in the 2017 Catch-A-Calf program. Congratulations to Kaysa Kurtz! More information regarding the Catch-A- Calf Program: The Catch-A-Calf program is sponsored by the National Western Stock Show. The Catch-A-Calf Program is a great opportunity designed to promote youth development and understanding of the cattle feeding industry. Youth are encouraged to manage their projects from the mindset of commercial cattle feeding. Applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 to apply, and also enrolled in 4- H at the time of application. Successful catchers must have adequate facilities available to house their steer as they are responsible for the care, feeding, and handling of their animal. The contestants enter the arena with a rope halter and no more than a 10 ft. lead, catch a calf, place the halter on the head of the animal in the usual way, then lead the calf to the gate. Successful contestants then receive their project calf in May and immediately start with it as a 4-H project for exhibit at the next National Western Stock Show. Once each month from May to December, that are required to write a letter to the sponsor of the calf. They are required to complete a National Western Catch-A-Calf record book. These calves will then be shown and sold at the National Western Stock Show. Cake Decorating Classes See what it s like to work in a real bakery and learn decorating techniques from Geneva of Sweet Indulgent Creations Bakery in Rocky Ford. Spots are still available for Tuesday, February 21 st and Thursday, February 23 rd from 4:30-6:00 pm, but are very limited. The classes cost $10 and are open to youth ages 8 and older. Marlena Griesse, Otero/Crowley 4-H agent has challenged each club to make as many blankets as they can for Project Linus. The Mission of Project Linus is to: Provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer blanketeers. Also, provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children. Project Linus blankets can be of any material, so long as they are free of smoke, chemicals, and pet hair. Project Linus donates blankets to children of all ages, so quilts may be as small as 36 X36 or as large as a twin size quilt. All blankets must be handmade, but may include quilts, afghans, or even simple fleece tied blankets. Blankets are due in the Otero or Crowley County Extension Office by February 28 th. The club that donates the most blankets will receive a pizza party and bragging rights! I know everybody is very busy and participation is not a requirement, but will be greatly appreciated and will support a great cause. Otero County 4-H Foundation Past President s Scholarship The Otero County 4-H Foundation Board is pleased to announce the continuance of its $500 Past President s Scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding youth. The selection of the scholarship recipient will be based upon the applicant s academics, 4-H accomplishments & community activities. Applicants must have been in 4-H in Otero County for at least 5 years, with 2 of those years being after their 14th birthday. Applications must be submitted by April 1, 2017. Contact the Otero County Extension office or your school counselor for an application. Community Service Project The Otero County 4-H Council, which includes all the 4-H clubs in Otero County voted to continue participation in an ongoing community service project. The community service project is an agreement with the Otero County Commissioners and the City of Rocky Ford. 4-H clubs will clean the fairgrounds - pick up trash, mow weeds, rake, pick up tree limbs, etc. once a month. Otero County will pay 4-H for these services, and then those funds will be passed to the City of Rocky Ford to help offset some of the utilities expenses for the Event Center. In return, 4-H will use the fairgrounds and the Events Center for free for any 4- H event or activity. The Gobin building will also be free for the achievement banquet. The area that will be cleaned and maintained on the fairgrounds will be south of the grandstands (carnival area) to the west fence, around the 4-H barn and Rotary park. Trash bags will be supplied; however, 4- Hers are encouraged to bring rakes, shovels, and any other tools needed to spruce up the fairgrounds. Also be sure to bring proper eye and ear protection (i.e. safety glasses, ear plugs). Each club will have the same month they signed up for in 2010. Clubs must notify the extension office by the first day of the month to advise them of the exact day the club will be cleaning up. This is very important as the City will need to be notified and arrangements made to have the necessary keys. The monthly schedule/assignment is as follows: April - Kactus Kids May - Dams & Sires June - Cloverleaf Livestock July - Sand & Sage August - Fort Bent September - Cheraw Community Jr. Show Committee Meeting The Arkansas Valley Jr. Show Committee will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. More Just for Fun!
