e-sense from Eijkelkamp Agrisearch Equipment All it takes for environmental research

e-sense The management of monitoring of equipment is increasingly done remotely at a (considerable) distance. Configuration, reading and, if necessary, taking action on data received from a remote location of one s choice are possibilities that are nowadays standard requirements. You can do a lot more than just measure with the e-sense telemetry measuring system, where measurement data is collected by intelligent sensors such as the e+ -sensors or the Diver. Intelligent sensors independently measure data in the field and save them internally. Your measurements or alarm signals are sent to a database in your own PC (e-sense direct) via the connection with the e-sense field modem. 2 All it takes for

e-sense direct e-sense direct is easy to install (Plug & Play), to manage and to maintain. With e-sense direct, you can manage and communicate with your sensors from your PC. You have an overview over the whole installation and you can change all the settings. This allows you to operate the system optimally with respect to response speed, data traffic costs and the use of batteries. The measurements can be imported into the Logger Data Manager (LDM) e+ software, after which they can be processed, e.g. into graphical representations and reports. You can also export the data to your own personal database. Artesia: Water infiltration against drying Water supply company Evides and the Province of North Brabant hired Artesia consultancy to support the implementation of a trial project for infiltration. Water supply company Evides wanted preferably to use groundwater for the preparation of drinking water in the Southwest Netherlands. It concerned a trial that had to show whether water infiltration was an effective tool against drying. 9 e+ SOIL MCT sensors, supplied by Eijkelkamp, monitored the infiltration from the infiltration reservoirs by measuring moisture content. Moreover, 24 Divers, supplied by Eijkelkamp, were used to measure the temperature and the water level. All sensors under the infiltration water were fitted with a readout cable at the edge of the infiltration reservoirs. This project was an interesting application of the multi-functional e+ SOIL MCT. This soil moisture, conductivity and temperature sensor saves the measured data internally and can pass it on to the user via the e-sense telemetry system or send it directly to the readout unit or PC. Reference project e-sense direct Open Interface as option By using a modern standardised SQL database system, e-sense direct gets an Open Interface that ensures that the system can be linked easily and cheaply with standard components to other software systems such as SCADA. In this way, SCADA systems can use all the unique facilities of e-sense direct such as Plug & Play when changing configurations in the field. In addition, there is also the option of activating the e-sense direct user interface for specific functions that one does not wish to integrate into the SCADA systems. Province of Gelderland / Vitens: automated measuring network In the fully-automated primary groundwater level measuring network of the Province of Gelderland and the secondary measurement systems around the groundwater withdrawal holes of water supply company VITENS, the groundwater level is measured every 3 hours by Divers. Collecting information on the groundwater system in a systematic way is necessary to manage the groundwater well. Each province is therefore obliged to set up a measuring network for groundwater: this measuring network comprises more than 400 measurement locations. From 1998, daily readouts were taken at 16 of these locations using telemetry. Of these 16 locations, 6 or 7 have since been fitted with an e-sense module. With a Diver integrated into the e-sense system, Vitens always has all the values at its disposal without being dependent for this on access to a certain location. Reference project environmental research 3

e-sense communication by sending data via SMS The decision was taken to use a GSM/SMS-network. The reason for this was that the GSM-network now has an almost world encompassing range. Data communication by SMS is relatively inexpensive and the expectations are that prices will fall further in the near future. As far as this is concerned, this system distinguishes itself from other commonly used systems. Communication with these systems occurs via GSM-networks that depend on interaction between the sending and receiving modem. Reference project Arcadis: prevention of floods in Romania In the winter months, a mountainous region of Romania suffers from considerable flooding. This problem was tackled by Arcadis. Part of the project concerned setting up a monitoring network, so that timely measures could be taken in times of high water. At this point, Eijkelkamp came into the picture with its e-sense modems, Diver and the e+ RAIN sensors. With the installation of 5 e-sense measuring stations, one hopes to get a better insight in the future into the behaviour of the rivers. Through this project, one also hopes in the future to in any case easily change the measuring frequency from one s PC in times of heavy rainfall and during a risk of flooding. If desired, the most recent water levels can be viewed and measures can be taken based upon them, e.g. the evacuation of the population from the areas threatened by flooding. The e-sense system generates an alarm Such interaction always demands the full availability of the connection and the receiving modem. Substantial costs are associated with both the equipment and the communication with this way of working. The right alternative is SMS (short message service), a service that almost all GSM providers offer. The measurements from the connected intelligent sensors are read out and sent as SMS-code to the database. Very little data traffic is required for such messages and this is why it is cheap.. Reference project TNO-NITG: predicting groundwater levels and soil moisture profiles Some time ago, TNO-NITG performed a pilot project that followed the groundwater and soil moisture situation on a daily basis and tested this against the desired situation. In addition, it predicted online the groundwater levels and soil moisture profiles for the coming five to ten days. This resulted in a tool to curb the geohydrological risks in advance. The trial set-up comprised one automatic groundwater level meter the Diver - and five e+ SOIL MCT sensors. They were able to make the most current situation overseeable, so that it could serve as the basis for the prediction. Each day, the Eijkelkamp e-sense SMS-modem sends the latest measurements by SMS to the central data server. In this way, the latest measurements were at hand to make the best prediction. If you compare this measurement method with the traditional manual measurement method, the high measurement frequency and the rapid availability of the data of the e-sense-system was notably in favour of the new method. 4 All it takes for

Two-way communication With e-sense, two-way communication is possible between the measuring element in the field and the central computer system. The data is sent from the sensor to the database. The settings of the sensors in the field can easily be changed from your workstation. Increasing or reducing the measuring interval is easy and one does not need to go to the measuring locations oneself. One can also download the documents in the LDM software and in ASCII-format (using spreadsheets). Limburg Water Board (WML): providing drinking water To save scarce groundwater, WML increasingly takes drinking water from Maas water. Modern technology makes drinking water from Maas water that satisfies the most stringent quality requirements and tastes good. WML started after lengthy research with the purchase of 10 Divers. This has since grown to no less than 900. At the end of 2000, it was decided that an increased number of parameters and the faster retrieval of data from the Diver was necessary for WML and attention was given here in particular to further time saving. For this, telemetry appeared to be the solution and e-sense the system. Reference project Zeeland Islands Water Board: optimisation of measuring network with e+ WATER L In 2005, Zeeland Islands Water Board decided to further optimise its measuring network with Divers with 50 extra measuring points with e+ WATER L sensors. Because it related to data that would be used in calculations, the water board did not think it necessary to put the data directly online. Zeeland Islands chose the e+ WATER L, as these sensors have internal air pressure compensation and because the whole package of delivery, installation and service was offered by one company: Eijkelkamp. The complete set comprises a modem, a power source (100 240 Vac), an antenna, a communication cable and software. Field modems Field modems are available in four different types. The sets with the suffix SA have a standard power supply. The sets with the suffix SB have a power supply for a long lifespan. e-sense field modem set, 2 ports e-sense field modem set, 8 ports An SMS-modem for GSM-data communication with maximum 2 or 8 sensors (e+ sensors or Divers). With a status readout on the display. Power supply 7.5 Vdc. Readout and configuration via database. e-sense field modem set, long lifespan, 2 ports e-sense field modem set, long lifespan, 8 ports An SMS-modem for GSM-data communication with maximum 2 or 8 sensors (e+ sensors or Divers). With a status readout on the display. Power supply 7.5 Vdc. Readout and configuration via database. Installation in the field, Plug & Play The e-sense field modem is equipped with a display that displays the status during installation. One of the functions of the e-sense modem is firstly to determine what the best set-up is for good GSM-coverage. The following step is connecting the sensors to the watertight connectors. The e-sense-modem checks whether the connected sensors work correctly. If desired, the current measurement values of the sensors can be checked using a laptop. The configuration of the measurement setup is sent in coded SMS-messages to the database. This processes the messages and sends confirmation of receipt back to the measuring units. The e-sense-modem indicates that everything is working correctly and the user can close the watertight fraud-proof field housing with an easy mind. Advantages The advantages are: Inexpensive. The modem can be used in mobile installations. Flexibility as regards the measurement parameters. Long lifespan. Different types of sensors can be used. Alarm function. The batteries have the capacity to provide the whole installation with power for a year. uizingen 6 All it takes for

The e+ WATER L sensors can be fitted with a robust and functional stainless steel assembly system, which can easily be combined with the existing level indicators. D. Diver-sensors for groundwater All members of the Diver family can be used as e+ sensors in the e-sensesystem. The Diver is the smallest device in the world for automatically measuring and recording groundwater levels and groundwater temperatures. The CTD-Diver also measures conductivity of the water. 8 All it takes for

5 6 This device fits in the palm of your hand and is surprisingly lightweight. With a length of only 90 mm (183 mm for the CTD-Diver) and a diameter of 22 mm (18 mm for the MicroDriver), the Diver can be used in almost every monitoring well. The pressure sensor, the conductivity sensor and the data logger and its battery are all placed in a hermetically sealed stainless steel or ceramic housing. This ensures that the Diver is less sensitive to moisture or external electric influences (Faraday cage). The Diver can easily be placed in a monitoring well by hanging it up on a steel or vectran wire. The Diver is available in various designs: The MiniDiver : a stainless steel housing and a ceramic pressure sensor, diameter 22 mm, length 90 mm, available for different measuring ranges, memory capacity 24,000 measurements. The MicroDiver : a stainless steel housing, a ceramic pressure sensor, diameter 18 mm, length 90 mm, available for different measuring ranges, memory capacity 48,000 measurements. The CeraDiver : a ceramic housing, a ceramic pressure sensor, diameter 22 mm, length 90 mm, available for different measuring ranges, memory capacity 48,000 measurements. The CTD-Diver : : a ceramic housing, a ceramic pressure sensor and a platinum ceramic conductivity sensor (measuring range 0 80 ms/cm), diameter 22 mm, length 183 mm, available for different measuring ranges, memory capacity 16,000 measurements. The Baro-Diver : the function of the Barodiver is to record atmospheric pressure. It can quickly and easily compensate for variations with the software of the Logger Data Manager (LDM). Cables Communication cables There are two different types of cables: Communication cables to connect e+ sensors to the SMS-modem, varying in length from 1 to 200 metres, with an IP68-connector for watertight connections. Communication cables to connect Divers to the SMS-modem, varying in length from 1 to 200 metres, with an IP68-connector for watertight connections. Readout and communication The readout and configuring of the e+ sensors or Divers can occur in different ways: Through the e-sense-modem, via the software of e-sense direct or LDM (Logger Data Manager). With an infrared readout device that is used if the e+sensor or Diver is placed in the immediate vicinity of a PC (Laptop). If the e+ sensors or Divers are used as stand alone applications, the following accessories can be used: A Diver Data Cable, available in different lengths of up to 200 m (only for Divers) to read the sensors manually. An IrDa-readout unit. These are meant for the readout of the measurements from the e+ sensor or Diver using a laptop computer. This can occur at a distance of 1 or 2 metres from the e+ sensor. For this, the IrDa-readout unit must be aimed at the infrared LEDs on the side of the e+sensor. 7 Optional accessories Finally, various optional accessories are available, such as field supports and augers for the installation of e+ SOIL MCT sensors. environmental research 9
