May, 2010 TO: RE: Class 4-A Baseball School Athletic Directors and Coaches 2010 Baseball Tournament Seeding Information Dear Athletic Directors and Coaches, The Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Control approved the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association s recommendation that tournament seeding be used in Class 4-A. There will be eight (8) substates with 6 teams in each substate. Each substate winner will qualify for the State Baseball Tournament. All teams will be seeded in each substate. The tournament assignments have been made and posted on the IHSAA Website. Seeding will be used to determine all six (6) seeds in each substate. The seeding will be based on regular season play (games 1-30) OR games played through Saturday, July 3, 2010. (If a school has not played thirty games through Saturday, July 3rd, the seeding form must be faxed and your seed will be determined on the number of games you have played through Saturday, July 3rd.) 4 Points for a victory over an Iowa 4-A school 3 Points for a victory over an Iowa 3-A school 2 Points for a victory over an Iowa 2-A school 1 Point for a victory over an Iowa 1-A school Any varsity games played against out of state opponents will not count toward the seeding, but will count against your overall win/loss record. The points are totaled for each school s regular season play (games 1-30) divided by the number of games. The teams seeds will be determined using this per game point average.
IF A TIE FOR A SEED EXISTS Step 1: Step 2: Head-to-head competition during the regular season games. If the tied teams did not meet or one team did not win more games than the other in head-to-head competition, then; The LAST alphabetical gets the highest seed. In all substates, the #1 seed will play the #6 seed in the first round, the #2 seed will play the #5 seed in the first round, and the #3 seed will play the #4 seed in the first round. In the second round, the highest winning first round seed will receive the bye. The two lowest seeded winners will play each other in the second round. In the substate final, the team receiving the bye will play the winner of the second round game. All tournament sites will be determined by the IHSAA. The number one criteria for hosting a class 4-A sub-state contest will be the highest seeded team in the six team sub-state will host if criteria number two is satisfied. The number two criteria for hosting a class 4-A sub-state contest will be using a field that has lights with a starting time of 7:00 p.m., with the following exceptions. 1. If the higher seeded team does not have lights, the higher seeded team would need to find a facility that does have lights and would not increase travel distance between the two participating schools. In the event the higher seeded team can not locate a lighted facility, the game would be played at the lower seeded team s facility that does have lights. 2. Teams who do not have lights: If two teams from the same metropolitan area are playing each other and neither school has lights, the game will be played at 5:00 p.m. at the higher seeded schools facility. If the higher seeded team does not have lights and it is NOT two metropolitan teams playing, but the lower seeded team does or can provide a lighted field: The higher seeded team would need to find a local lighted facility or find a lighted facility with no further travel distance for the lower seeded team. If this can not take place the lower seeded team would host. Example: School A (higher seeded team), paired against School B (lower seeded team) and School A does not have lights, but School B does or can provide a lighted facility, School A would need to find a facility with lights and no further travel distance for School B. If this can not take place, School A would travel to lower seeded School B that can provide a lighted field. All regular season scores should be e-mailed to blegg@iahsaa.org immediately following the game(s) by an assigned individual on your staff or phoned in immediately following the contest (via cell phone on the way home from the contest) to 515-432-2011 and leave
it on the answering machine. Please keep in mind this seeding format will only work if everyone does their part. The IHSAA will have your seeding form on line, which must be faxed to us at 515-432- 2961 after 30 games or by midnight, July 3, 2010 whichever comes first. Again, this is your responsibility, and this system will be only as good as the responses we receive. Fax or email your current 2010 win/loss record (individual games) to our office by June 28, 2010, so we can verify our records with yours. Please fax or e-mail your regular season schedule to Todd Tharp (ttharp@iahsaa.org) as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Todd Tharp Assistant Executive Director
