Health DOES LIFEGUARD TECHNOLOGY ELIMINATE THE EYE IRRITATION, ITCHINESS AND REDNESS? Yes. LifeGuard Technology avoids all or most of the ill effects compared to chlorine and salt systems. DOES IT ELIMINATE THE NOXIOUS AND ANNOYING SMELL FROM CHLORINE? Yes. LifeGuard Technology reduces all or most of the odors compared to chlorine and salt systems. DOES LIFEGUARD TECHNOLOGY PRODUCE DISINFECTION BYPRODUCTS (CHLORAMINES)? No, however, if Clear Comfort is used in conjunction with chlorine, the chlorine will still produce DBPs. However, the Clear Comfort system has been proven to reduce DBPs in commercial pools by 90%+. 2
ARE THERE RISKS? Using LifeGuard Technology introduces no additional risk to your pool or spa environment. Furthermore, the reduction or elimination of chlorine lessens exposure to harmful disinfection byproducts (chloramines). In addition, third-party laboratories confirm that Clear Comfort also eliminates chlorine resistant microbes, such as Cryptosporidium parvum. WHAT ARE THE BYPRODUCTS PRODUCED, IF ANY? Disinfection byproducts are a harmful side effect of chlorine and saltwater pools. Chloramines and other chlorine-derived substances have been linked to childhood asthma, congenital defects and even cancer. Using powerful natural chemistry, LifeGuard Technology produces no harmful byproducts and is safe for children of any age. HAS THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT APPROVED THIS METHOD OF SANITATION? Yes, the Department of Health has approved Advanced Oxidation Disinfection Measures. Technology HOW DOES THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM WORK? Clear Comfort uses technology that is inspired by the natural process that makes our air clean and breathable. An Advanced Oxidation Process creates powerful hydroxyls that the system injects into the water pipes away from the swimming area. These hydroxyls destroy contaminants on contact, producing clean, clear water. The system also produces a low level of residual hydrogen peroxide that is present throughout the pool. The hydrogen peroxide is always on duty, providing effective residual sanitation. Hydrogen peroxide has, for decades, been proven to be a safe method to sanitize pool and spa water. HOW DOES CLEAR COMFORT DISINFECTION WORK? Clear Comfort s LifeGuard Technology produces a dual sanitizer and oxidizer. Sanitizers kill microbes such as bacteria, viruses and algae. Oxidizers, in addition to sanitizers, burn up waste products in the water such as body oil, sweat, urine and soap. Correctly managed pools need both oxidizers and sanitizers to ensure a clean and safe environment. 3
IS IT BETTER THAN A SALT SYSTEM? Yes. Salt systems are chlorine based and provide a different way of delivering the chlorine to the pool. NaCl is the chemical compound: Na = Sodium and Cl = Chloride. A salt system simply separates the two and produces chlorine from salt. That is why they are called chlorine generators. Equipment CAN THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM DAMAGE THE POOL / EQUIPMENT? The Clear Comfort system does not damage existing pool equipment. The hydroxyls are not introduced into the pool directly, but into the recirculating system outside of the pool environment. Benefits include: Reduction or elimination of chlorine wear and tear on the pool equipment. Reduction of chlorine and salt scaling in pumps and pipes. Reduction or elimination of unwanted odors that can destroy fabrics and carpets and affect people with chemical sensitivity WHAT MAKE AND MODEL IS THE VENTURI INJECTOR USED IN THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM? Clear Comfort provides a 583 Mazzei venturi for all residential installations and a 1583 for commercial installs. If the flow rate is too high, it may impede filter functionality, so please complete a site survey and contact Clear Comfort technical support for guidance. WHAT ARE THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE UV LIGHT IN THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM CARTRIDGES? Within the replaceable Clear Comfort cartridge, a 3 Watt UV bulb and an intense magnetic flux provide the processing power for pool water disinfection. IS CLEAR COMFORT ABLE TO REGULATE FOR TEMPERATURE CHANGES AUTOMATICALLY WITH A CONTROLLER OR ARE ADJUSTMENTS DEPENDENT ON OPERATOR INTERVENTION? Clear Comfort's system is self-regulating pool operator intervention is not required. As long as the system is running, it will deliver the appropriate disinfection for the system on which it has been installed. Temperature does not impact the effectiveness of the system s disinfection. 4
IS THE SYSTEM COMPATIBLE WITH POPULAR FILTRATION SYSTEMS: SAND, DIATOMACEOUS EARTH CARTRIDGES? Yes. Clear Comfort's system is compatible with all filtration systems. Hydrogen peroxide will not melt the DE filter because the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is a low 0.2-0.5 ppm while the concentration required to melt DE is much higher. IS THE SYSTEM COMPATIBLE WITH COMMON AUXILIARY SYSTEMS LIKE HEATERS AND BUILDING HEAT EXCHANGERS? Yes. Clear Comfort's system is not only compatible with common auxiliary systems, but helps reduce calcification and scaling, particularly on components like heaters and heat exchangers. It also reduces corrosion throughout the building environment by reducing the corrosive loading of the pool. IS THE SYSTEM COMPATIBLE WITH PVC, COPPER, AND CAST IRON PIPING? Yes the system is compatible. IS THERE ANY AFFECT ON POOL FINISHES? Using the Clear Comfort system will result in reductions in toxic, corrosive chemistry, which should in turn reduce negative effects on all finishes, components, accessories, etc. Clear Comfort is unaware of any impact on finishes. IS CLEAR COMFORT COMPATIBLE WITH PLASTER POOLS? Yes, Clear Comfort is compatible with plaster pools. It is important to maintain calcium hardness, ph and alkalinity in accordance with the plaster manufacturer or pool builder. ARE THERE INCOMPATIBLE ACCESSORIES OR SYSTEMS TO BE AWARE OF? The simplicity of the chemistry enables universal adaptability of the Clear Comfort system. Because the system works with hydrogen and oxygen, the building blocks of water, it is compatible with all systems Clear Comfort has encountered. The only incompatibility is the use of soft rubbers in plumbing, however, in solution (water), there is no negative effect on these substances. Soft rubbers, such as tygon or vinyl, can be weakened if exposed to the Clear Comfort gas, but Clear Comfort supplies the required plumbing (air hose, check valve) so there is no risk of gas exposure incompatibility. 5
WHAT ARE YOUR GUIDELINES FOR A 1 SPEED PUMP, 2 SPEED PUMP AND A VARIABLE SPEED PUMP? Please contact Clear Comfort at 303.872.4477 or info@clearcomfort.com or consult the Pool Comfort Matrix for questions regarding different turnover rates. ARE THERE ANY RISKS IF THE POOL EQUIPMENT MALFUNCTIONS AND THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO OPERATE? There is no risk to the equipment or the pool if the Clear Comfort system operates after other equipment has malfunctioned or failed. If the pump is not operating, the Clear Comfort system is unable to disinfect the water; water must flow past the system in order for the system to perform disinfection, just as with a standard chlorinator. The residual hydrogen peroxide will provide disinfection in the pool during an interim period, but Clear Comfort recommends closing the pool until the pump or broken components are fixed. HOW LONG WILL THE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE RESIDUAL CONTINUE TO DISINFECT IF THE SYSTEM AND PUMP ARE NOT OPERATING? Residual hydrogen peroxide will continue to disinfect even when the system and pump are off. If the system fails, the amount of hydrogen peroxide and the time it remains in the pool depends on conditions including bather load and organic loading. To avoid problems due to lack of sanitation, the Clear Comfort system should be operating properly. WHAT REACTION DOES THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM HAVE IF THE WATER IS SHOCKED BY ANY TYPE OF SANITATION AT HIGH LEVELS OF PPM? Shocking the pool (chlorine or non-chlorine shock) produces no ill effects while using a Clear Comfort system. WHAT ARE THE INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SYSTEM? IS THERE AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT NEEDED? All components required for installation are included with the system when it ships. Prior to shipping, Clear Comfort needs to know: The size of the body of water The pool s use profile Whether a 110v or 220v is required. For the CCW100 unit, the ballast is variable and can be set to 110v or 220v. Whether the system will be wired to the pump circuit (recommended) or, if it will be plugged it into a wall outlet, Clear Comfort can ship it with a pigtail. 6
Installation with a venturi will capture the pressure drop before and after the filter, potentially with the use of a booster pump depending on the existing conditions. In some cases with lower flow (~50-100GPM) a bypass can be installed to create the needed pressure drop for proper venturi operation. Chemistry WHAT IS THE EFFECT ON PH? Clear Comfort s LifeGuard Technology does not alter the ph in any measurable way. hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide do not contribute directly to water ph change nor will additional measures be needed other than standard pool ph balancing requirements based on the source of the water feeding the pool. IS THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM AFFECTED BY FLUCTUATIONS IN TEMPERATURE OR WEATHER? Fluctuations in temperature do not impact the disinfection process. Varying sunshine is also a non-issue for Clear Comfort while cyanuric acid must be used in chlorine and saline/salt systems to stabilize the chlorine in outdoor pools, the residual disinfection agent H2O2 is stable in outdoor environments. In addition, rain does not affect hydroxyl performance. IS CYANURIC ACID AND MURIATIC ACID NEEDED IN COMMERCIAL POOLS? Pools should be maintained and water balanced as usual. While this undertaking is easier and less complicated with Clear Comfort, it is not eliminated entirely. IS THERE RISK OF TOO MUCH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE BEING ADDED TO THE POOL? There is no risk that the hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide (or any byproducts of it in liquid or air form) will exceed safe levels for humans. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide will never exceed 5 mg/l (5 ppm) even in very high organic loading situations. Higher organic loading scenarios in cooling tower water streams (much higher organic loading than pool water) have proven this. Hydrogen peroxide will disintegrate over time or will provide water disinfection during low periods of pool use without creating unwanted disinfection byproducts. 7
IS CLEAR COMFORT COMPATIBLE WITH BIGUANIDE? Clear Comfort does not recommend installing the system with Biguanide systems. Per the Biguanide manufacturer, ozone is not compatible with Biguanide, and the Clear Comfort system does produce a small amount of ozone. Commercial HOW DOES THE SYSTEM COMPLY WITH COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC POOL CODE REQUIREMENTS? Adhering to code is important, especially when it comes to patrons health. The residual hydrogen peroxide created by Clear Comfort s LifeGuard Technology will act alongside the code required residual chlorine to provide added disinfection keeping the pool safe and in regulatory compliance. WHAT ARE THE MAINTENANCE NEEDS OF THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM ON A COMMERCIAL POOL? Maintenance to the Clear Comfort system is minimal. The lights should be checked during routine pool maintenance and the cartridges should be replaced when indicated by lights on the front of the enclosure. Clear Comfort will provide these cartridges at no charge to commercial customers. HOW DOES THE SYSTEM SHOW IT IS WORKING? The Clear Comfort system provides indicators for the proper functioning flow of treated air that will deliver the correct amount of hydroxyls and hydrogen peroxide to the water being treated. For public and commercial pools, the minimum acceptable amount of chlorine should be kept and measured using traditional methods. WHAT ARE THE SAVINGS WHEN REDUCING OR ELIMINATING CHEMICALS IN THE POOL? Chemical savings depends on the volume of the pool and the bather load. For a typical commercial pool with normal use, customers will save roughly 60 percent to 80 percent on chlorine costs. For high bather loads or instances of fecal contamination, pool operators will 8
endure less downtime and use less chlorine. Most importantly the disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are greatly reduced or eliminated. DO ORP METERS WORK FOR THE CLEAR COMFORT SYSTEM? Most pools run at an extremely high level (>500mV) of ORP. Like chlorine, Clear Comfort s LifeGuard Technology also delivers oxidizing compounds that deliver a high oxidative potential, identical in function to chlorine. WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED LEVELS OF READINGS ON THE ORP? There is no required ORP setting, but for commercial pools, Clear Comfort will help reach chlorine goals. ORP is a proxy for chlorine level, rather than an actual ppm of chlorine and may not reflect proper disinfection. The Clear Comfort system will not influence ORP, so it is a matter of communicating the goal (i.e., Get down from 5 ppm to 1.0 ppm) and using the ORP as a feedback loop to get there.
