TEXAS-ARLINGTON VOLLEYBALL NOTES - Page 2 WEEKLY REWIND After dropping two straight matches for the first time all season the Mavericks recovered well and closed out the season with two wins on their home court. UTA edged past Nicholls State 3-2 Friday evening behind 20 kills from senior Caley Smith, and routed the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in the regular season finale for both squads. UNLUCKY #3 UTA enters this week s SLC tournament as the third seed for the second straight year after closing out the season with a 15-5 league mark. This year marks the fourth time since 1996 the Mavericks have earned the third seed, but the previous three times UTA has never advanced to the championship match. Nicholls State sent the Mavericks packing early last season with a 3-0 upset victory in the first round. SIXTH SEEDED SAM Making its first postseason appearance since 1996, Sam Houston State heads to Beaumont as the sixth seed after closing out conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Nicholls State to claim the final seed. The Bearkats have been paced all season by a trio of juniors as Alisha Fowler, Chrissy Engle and Jennifer Henrichsen each averaging over 3.00 kills per game. Fowler leads the way with a 3.66 average. SHSU split the season series with the Mavericks with each squad winning on its home floor, but UTA holds a 40-13 all-time advantage dating back to 1973. BEST START The Mavericks opened the season with their best start in school history through 12 matches with an 11-1 mark after defeating Louisiana-Monroe on September 18. Hoy played for UTA from 1994-1997 and remains one of the most decorated players in UTA history. As a freshman, Hoy became just the second player in UTA history to be named the SLC Freshman of the Year. She went on the earn first team all-conference honors from 1995-1997 and earned the team s Most Valuable Player award in each of her four seasons. DUNN MOVES TO No. THREE ON CAREER LIST Senior setter Heather Dunn has moved into No. 3 on UTA s career assist list with 5,386 assists. SMITH MOVES IN TO TOP TEN Senior middle blocker Caley Smith used eight kills against Texas-San Antonio to jump into the sixth spot on UTA s career kill list. Smith owns 1,355 career kills and surpasses Trisha Walker who tallied 1,344 kills from 1997-2000. SMITH RETURNS AT LIBERO Sophomore Ashley Smith returned to the libero position at Sam Houston State after missing 10 matches in her starting role due to injury. Smith led the Mavericks in 2003 averaging 3.86 digs per game from the back row. Freshman Dani Johnson, who started in Smith s place at libero, will be used to add depth to the outside. CAPTAINS Seniors Heather Dunn and Caley Smith have been elected team captains for the 2004 season. VAN ANTWERP SWINGING STRONG After seeing limited action in her first two seasons with the Mavericks, junior Ashley Van Antwerp has started every game in 2004 and made her presence known on the court. She has led the UTA at the net in more than half of its matches and has recorded doubledigit kills and digs in 19 outings. The outside hitter earned two consecutive all-tournament honors after leading the Mavs to back-to-back tourney titles in preseason action. Van Antwerp is averaging 4.24 kills per game and 3.54 digs. FRESHMAN DEBUT Many Maverick have noticed new faces on the court this season after two freshman worked their way into the starting rotation for the Mavs. Outside hitter Morgan Rogers and middle blocker Torie Dacus have started every match this season and have made a definite contribution to the Mavs success. Rogers, a three-time SLC player of the week, is leading the UTA defense with 4.20 digs per game while Dacus is contributing 3.10 per game to the Mavs efforts. Freshman Dani Johnson has appeared in 60 games for UTA, splitting time between the libero and outside hitter positions. ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES Texas-Arlington was one of only two schools to collect two preseason all- Southland Conference first team selections as seniors Heather Dunn and Caley Smith were tabbed to the squad. Dunn, a second team selection in 2003, returns to run the Mavericks offense after starting all 105 games and dishing out 1,195 assists last season. An Arlington native, Dunn ranks No. 3 on UTA s career assist list (4,501) and ranked fifth in the SLC last season averaging 11.38 assists per game. Smith returns for her final campaign in a Maverick uniform after earning second team honors in 2003, third team honors in 2002 and being named the league s freshman of the year in 2001. In 2003, Smith ranked second on her squad in kills and digs averaging 3.77 and 3.18, respectively. MAVS FINISH THIRD In separate polls by the league s head coaches and sports information directors, UTA was tabbed to finish fourth in the SLC this season, but the Mavericks proved both groups wrong sitting at the top of the league through most of league play and finishing in third place with a 15-5 mark. Stephen F. Austin and Texas State, last season s champion, shared the 2004 league title with SFA earning the top seed in the league s postseason tournament. TOURNEY HISTORY The Mavericks have not won the Southland Conference tournament since earning back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.
