The two teams decided today that they will play a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and a single game starting at 3 p.m. The Hokies (13-13, 3-6 ACC) swept their midweek doubleheader against East Tennessee State on Tuesday and run ruled North Carolina, 13-4, on March 19. All the while, the Hokies continue to be one of the top offensive teams in the ACC as they rank in the top five in slugging percentage, batting average and on-base percentage. Tech leads the league and ranks sixth in the nation with 35 home runs. The Irish (13-13, 1-5 ACC) snapped a three-game losing streak with an 11-3 win over Michigan State on Wednesday. They ve won nine-straight against the Hokies and lead the all-time series, 20-6. Tech last defeated Notre Dame on March 15, 2014, a 5-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader. Became Tech s first head softball coach when he was hired on July 7, 1995. In 22 seasons, he has recorded 752 wins averaging 36 wins per season and making the conference tournament championship game eight times (2 Atlantic 10; 2 Big East; 4 ACC). Tech has also advanced to at least the semifinals of eight of the 11 ACC Tournaments its played in since joining the league. Has led the Hokies to eight NCAA Regionals - four-straight from 2005-08 and four-consecutive from 2012-15. Guided Tech to its fourth-straight NCAA Regional in 2008, a program first. Tech was seeded 16th nationally and No. 1 at the Columbus Regional in 2007. Overall Tech, has been to eight NCAA Regionals. Led Tech to the Women s College World Series in 2008, a first for the program. The Hokies also finished a program-best eighth in both final polls that year. Led the Hokies to a 1-0 upset win over the USA National Team in an exhibition game on March 26, 2008 at Oklahoma City, snapping the team s 185- game pre-olympic exhibition tour winning streak. Led the Hokies to Atlantic Coast Conference tournament titles in both 2007 and 2008. Also led the Hokies to the regular-season title in 2007, a program first. Has coached two NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-Americans: Angela Tincher (2nd team in 2007; 1st team in 2008 and 1st team in 2009) and Jenna Rhodes (3rd team in 2009). Has had 35 different players named to the VaSID All-State University Team 68 different times, including at least three on each of the last nine teams. Had four former players play play in the NPF: Angela Tincher and Kelsey Hoffman with the Akron Racers; Jenna Rhodes with the Rockford Thunder/ Tennessee Diamonds; and Courtney Liddle with the NY/NJ Comets/Pennsylvania Rebellion. Davenport is tough to K Junior Breanna Davenport has come on in conference play to slug.920, hit four home runs and collect 23 total bases. She s also one of the toughest hitters to strike out in the ACC. She s only gotten out three times this season by way of the K three times in 83 plate appearances. Davenport has homered four times in the last six games and is tied for the team lead with senior Vanessa Gonzalez with six home runs. Gonzalez wins ACC Player of the Week Senior outfielder Vanessa Gonzalez was named ACC Player of the Week on March 6 after she hit.667 (8-for-12) with two home runs, three doubles and six RBI for the Hokies in their conference-opening series at Virginia. Gonzalez slugged 1.417, had a.714 on-base percentage and struck out only once in 14 plate appearances in a 2-1 weekend for the Hokies. Gonzalez hit the game-clinching three-run home run in the top of the sixth of the series opener that gave the Hokies a 13-5 lead and put the run rule in effect. Gonzalez also hit a solo home run on the very first pitch of the game that set the tone for the Hokies 5-1 series-clinching win on Sunday. HOKIES OFFENSE BY THE NUMBERS Nearing the halfway point of the season, Virginia Tech has one of the top offenses in the ACC and in the country. Tech s.522 slugging percentage ranks second in the ACC and 14th in the country and their 5.5 runs scored per game ranks third in the conference and 57th in Division. Sophomore catcher Lauren Duff has picked up right where she left off behind the plate as a freshman as she s posted a.421 caught stealing rate (8-for-19) thus far this season. Duff threw three runners out in the Hokies three-game series against North Carolina and all three ended an inning. She had one of the top performances in recent memory for Tech after throwing a no-hitter and going 4-for-4 with two runs scored in a 13-0 run rule victory over Seton Hall. Richardson picked up hits in seven-consecutive at bats over two games and hit her first career home run in a 10-0 win over Coppin State. Her play garnered her NFCA Top Performer of the Week honors. Hokies beat Iowa in comeback fashion, twice The Hokies defeated Iowa by the score of 2-1 twice to pick up two wins in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge last weekend. The Hawkeyes got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second of the first meeting with a solo home run. They held onto the lead until a wild pitch scored junior Jessie Mehr in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 1-1. Junior Breanna Davenport delivered with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth that scored freshman Whitney Metz from third and gave Tech a 2-1 win. In the second meeting, with the score tied at 1-1 entering the top of the sixth, redshirt sophomore Chelsea Whitcomb delivered with the go-ahead home run, her first of the season, to give the Hokies the lead for good at 2-1. Eberle wins first two career starts Freshman Carrie won her first two career starts as a Hokie against Indiana State and CSU Bakersfield at the Sportco Invitational in Las Vegas. The Charlotte native tossed 12.0 innings and allowed only three earned runs in those two starts. She s the first freshman since teammate Mikaela Aiken in 2015 to in the first two starts of her career at Tech. Hokies picked to finish fifth in ACC coach poll The Virginia Tech softball team was picked to finish fifth in the ACC preseason poll by the league s head coaches. The Hokies earned 58 total points from the coaches and Florida State was predicted to win the conference for the fourth-consecutive season. Louisville (86), Notre Dame (84) and North Carolina (67) joined Tech in the top five of the poll. Tech finished in a tie fifth last season with a 13-11 record in the ACC. The return of Aysha Richardson After being sidelined for almost two years due to an injury and transferring, junior Aysha Richardson is back and ready to compete for a starting job entering the 2017 season. Richardson hit.286 in 21 at-bats with seven starts as a freshman before her season ended due to injury. Head coach Scot Thomas could see Richardson help the team in a myriad of areas including the outfield, infield, in the circle and as a pinch runner. 7
