Updates No changes have been made to the original schedules released in Mailer 1. The concrete canoe display portion and steel bridge competition will be held at the Houghton County Arena in Hancock, MI. The ice will be melted at this point, and will serve as a large area perfect for both competitions. The arena is located just north of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, and is approximately a 10 minute drive from Michigan Tech s campus Concrete Canoe oral presentations will be held in Michigan Tech s Mineral and Materials Engineering building, Room U-115. This is the same room that the technical presentation will be held in. Mailer III projected release will be early March. This will contain all final information pertaining to the Conference.

Hotel Accommodations For Students Houghton: We have made arrangements with the Country Inn & Suites (906-487-6700), and the Holiday Inn Express (906-482-1066) for any students who will be attending the conference. Rooms at the Country Inn & Suites will be $75 per room per night. Be sure to mention that you would like a room in the block ASCE. The deadline for guaranteed rooms at this rate is March 7 th, 2013. However, they will offer rooms at the group rate as long as they are available. The Country Inn is located in the expanding shopping/restaurant district just west of downtown Houghton, minutes from the Michigan Tech campus. Some of their facilities include a swimming pool, exercise room, close parking and close vicinity to several dining choices. In the event that the Country Inn fills up, we suggest contacting the Holiday Inn Express (906-482-1066). They also have a group rate available for $89 per room per night under the block Michigan Tech ASCE. They are located near the Country Inn and offer many of the same facilities. In the event that the concrete canoe races will be held in Saginaw, it is the responsibility of the hotel guest to cancel any unneeded rooms/nights. Failure to do so will result in additional hotel charges. Saginaw: Arrangements have been made with the Country Inn and Suites (989-792- 7666). The rate is $85.99 per room per day under the block ASCE Regional Competition. In order to get the rate, all rooms must be booked, so final rates may be higher. In the event that the Country Inn and Suites is booked, guests should contact the Super 8 (989-791-3003). Both hotels are approximately one mile from Haithco Recreation Area. In the event that the concrete canoe races will be held in Houghton, it is the responsibility of the hotel guest to cancel any unneeded rooms/nights.

Hotel Accommodations For Parents and Others Houghton: We have set up separate arrangements at the Franklin Square Inn (906-487- 1700) for parents and other spectators who may wish to stay in a separate location from teams. Guests should mention the 2013 ASCE Conference block when calling. The Franklin Square Inn is located downtown Houghton. Some of their facilities include a restaurant and bar, swimming pool, close parking and views of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and Mont Ripley Ski Hill. In the event that rooms are not available at the Franklin Square Inn, guests should try contacting the Ramada Inn (906-482-8400) or the Super 8 Hotel (906-482-2240). Both hotels are located in the Houghton-Hancock area. In the event that the concrete canoe races will be held in Saginaw, it is the responsibility of the hotel guest to cancel any unneeded rooms/nights. This may be done up to 24 hours in advance of the reservation time. Saginaw: Arrangements have been made with the Country Inn and Suites (989-792- 7666). General Notes The technical paper competition and presentation and concrete canoe technical paper and presentation are two separate competitions. With regards to points and scoring, the two events are not at all related. Please note however, that NCCC has included some stipulations regarding the technical paper competition in the rules for concrete canoe this year. Teams wishing to advance to the national competition must participate in the technical paper competition. The 2013 Daniel W. Mead Contest is completely separate from the 2013 North Central Conference Technical Paper Competition. Michigan Tech has chosen to use the Mead Competition topic for the technical paper competition in hopes that people participating in the conference competition may also enter in the Daniel W. Mead Contest. Michigan Tech is not responsible for submitting technical paper competition entries into the Daniel W. Mead Contest. This responsibility lies solely on the author of the paper.
