The Spudlete Middle Years Mathematics at LUTHER COLLEGE Winter 2007 Cheong 7 Maths All the events described Chasing the records. HEALTH and BEAUTY TIPS Our resident Spud expert COM-N-TATER Gives his tips the SPUD GAMES The games are only weeks away Are you ready to compete? What the experts are saying about the chances of the major athletes in the Spud Pentathlon? How will we design the new scoring system? An exclusive interview with the POA will reveal the proposed new method. PLUS All of the gossip from around the potato fields. Which fries are hot in the fashion stakes? Mr. Potato Head speaks about his battle with Herbicides and Potato Bugs.

The Spudlete 2007 page 2 Views from inside the Potato Sack From a one eyed potato Well folks, here we are at the 2 nd SPUD GAMES. I, Com N Tater, will be your sports broadcaster for the next few periods. This year s games promises to outdo the Monster Mash Up we had last year. Who could forget such wonderful competitors such as Spudie and SpikeHead. We were all surprised by the quality of the FASHION ON THE FRIES the winner was the simply delicious potato Beach Babe. Who will emerge as the champion potatolete will depend on the way they handle the difficult conditions over the two days. It is truly a test of the quality of the carbohydrates within. We have five events which entail skill, precision and daring. Many potatoes fell apart during the Splash and Dash of the competition at the Games of 2006. The place getters were: I can hardly wait to see who has entered for this year s events. The event is again proudly sponsored by McCain s Potato Oven Fries McCain has done it again. Middle School Mathematics page 3 - FIFTEEN seconds of fame - Getting the dug up on the new spudletes. Will the French Fries win again? How to be ready to jump and roll for the 5 events in the Pentathlon? How to glam up for the big day out. What s HOT and CRISP this Season. competitor Statistics Each competitor must submit a PERSONAL INFORMATION SHEET to be registered with the POA (Potato Olympics Athletes) Potato Patch Fashion NAME: Height: cm m Feathers and pipe cleaners add class to any wardrobe. New athletes are using these to enhance their chance of becoming the Fashion on the Fries winner in 2007. Waist Measure: cm Mass: gm kg Volume: cm 3 D.D.U (date dug up) Spuds have been dug and speared in the fields for years. This punk potato has exposed the new trend of body piercing. Punk potatoes have been rejected by McCain s Fries. Iron supplements are banned by the POA. Health warnings Pins and Needles hurt.

The Spudlete 2007 page 4 Measuring Potato Volume 2006 MEASURING UP Predicting Performance Your Potatolete needs to sorted into HWV divisions (Height Weight Volume). 1. You will need to help the CHEFS calculate the Group Averages for all Potatoletes: HEIGHT: WEIGHT: VOLUME: 2. Then classify your potatolete as ABOVE, AT or BELOW the average value. HEIGHT: WEIGHT: VOLUME: NOW ANSWER THESE Read carefully the description of the Games events on pages 7 to 8. Look at how you classified your Spudlete. Which games events are most likely to suit your Spudlete. Why do you think your Spudlete will do well in these events I Edwards 2007 Teachers Teaching with Technology (Aust)

Middle School Mathematics page 5 SPUDLETE PROFILE Write a short biography for your athlete. Give the family background and a history of sporting achievements. Rate the chances of your Potato becoming Top Spud.

The Spudlete 2007 page 6 THE MONSTER POTATO MASH BALL After you have completed the registration (Statistics and Profile), it is time to prepare your spud for the Opening Ceremony for the Spud Games. Remember that the competitor can be hindered in their event, if they overdress. SNAP FREEZE PHOTOS will take a shot of you Spudlete. PHOTOGRAPHS I Edwards 2007 Teachers Teaching with Technology (Aust)

Middle School Mathematics page 7 THE GAMES EVENTS SPUD JUMP The potato is dropped from a height of 1 metre ( Your hand will rest of a 1 m ruler). You need to drop the potato onto a see saw device. The device has a ping pong ball on it. The maximum height the ball is propelled upwards is the score. You are to estimate the height against a paper scale attached to the wall. (the height is rounded to nearest 10 cm) SPOT PUT The potato is rolled from a line 4 metres from a spot. The task is to come as close as possible to the spot on the floor. the Spot to the Spud. Roll from behind the tape - the starting roll line on the floor Measure the distance from SPUD ROLL The ramp is placed on a desk. The front edge of the ramp is placed on the tape line. The distance spud rolls away from the edge of the ramp is measured. The Record BOOK Pentathlon What are the events in the modern Pentathlon? 5 events comprise the modern pentathlon. These events are 1. Spud Roll 2. Spud Jump 3. High Splash 4. Spot Put 5. Fling Shot Spud Roll Dessiree 2006 RECORDS 3.5metres Shot Put Sky the Beach Babe 0.2 metre High Splash Poe Tato Mash Pontaic 150 cm Fling Shot Spudsworth 4.7 m Spud Jump Spike Head 120 cm

The Spudlete 2007 page 8 HIGH SPLASH (the final event) FLING SHOT The potato is to land and remain on the table tops. The fling shot is constructed multiple bands linked together. Experience shows that large draw backs causes failures. Table legs act as the poles onto which the bands are taped. The distance is measured from the front of the table. A bucket full of water is against the high wall outside in Middle School Area. The Spud is propelled down to make the largest splash. Have a friend estimate the splash height. Use the same 3 metre scale as in SPUD JUMP. (CLEAN UP YOUR SPUD AT THE END OF THE TRIALS) i Sports Results The Potato Olympics Competitor Record your best result for each event on the Class Record Sheet Activity Result 1 Result 2 Points Spud Roll Spud Put Spud Jump Fling Shot High Splash I Edwards 2007 Teachers Teaching with Technology (Aust)

Middle School Mathematics page 9 Relive the Moment 2006 Spud Games Old potatoes have passed away. Some went to eyes and others to the compost heap. Some were mashed and others became French Fries. One thing is agreed by all, that they we all champion chips. Yes, the task now is to use two sets of their amazing results to produce benchmark performance information. Then you will write a report comparing how your Spudlete s results to those of the 2006 Crop of Potatoes..
