Interim Head Coach Matt Gianiodis Matt Gianiodis begins his seventh season with the Michigan State swimming and diving teams. On Oct. 3, 2003, he was named the Spartans interim head coach. A 1992 graduate of St. Bonaventure, Gianiodis was a four-year letterwinner in men s swimming and won the Student-Athlete Academic Merit Award his senior year. He went on to earn his masters degree at the University at Buffalo in 1995. Gianiodis began his coaching career as the head coach of the Town of Tonawanda Titans Swim Club. In 1995, he received the ASCA Niagara District Age Group Coach of the Year Award. Gianiodis also served as a volunteer coach for the Buffalo men s swim team, before accepting an assistant s position in 1995. Gianiodis came to MSU in 1997. During his tenure at Michigan State, he has been instrumental in all facets of the program. He is the Director of the Spartan Swim Camps and also serves as an assistant coach with the Capital Area Swim Team during the summer. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Gianiodis resides in Lansing with his wife, Eileen, their sons Costa and Thomas and their daughter Anastasia. Q & A With Interim Head Coach Matt Gianiodis This is your first head-coaching job, how is being a head coach different from being an assistant? You have to deal with more administrative issues. I think parts of it may take me away from dealing with the kids one-on-one. Do you think there is extra pressure in a job at a Big Ten school like MSU? Yes, definitely. The school is so big, there is a heightened visibility level. What we do impacts so many more people than it does at a smaller school. Did being involved in the program for so long before you took the head coaching position help? I was able to work for two good guys, Richard Bader and Jim Lutz. Watching how Richard operated, especially administratively, helped me out very much as head coach. Being at the school has made me more familiar with the program, and I already knew the players. What has surprised you about the difference between being a head coach and being an assistant coach? When I was an assistant coach I just had a lot more time to do things. Being the head coach requires a lot more time, but the day moves by much faster now. What do you hope to contribute to the program now that you are the head coach? I hope we continue to do things well from an academic standpoint. Our team has a very good academic reputation. Student-athletes graduating from this program and leading productive lives, that s always our number one priority. We try to get represented at the NCAA Tournament, that s what gets major points for our department. What are the strongest points of your team? Sprinters are one of our strong points because we have recruited a lot of them, but our men s team is deeper than it has been in years. We have some good young divers, but the strongest point of our team is the leadership from the captains. We also have a great staff this year who can get our kids ready to go. What do you think your biggest challenge will be in the upcoming season? Meeting the individual needs for every student-athlete. The most difficult things will be making do with the numbers we have, in addition to being one coach short this season because of the transition. What are your goals for this season? We want to focus on the Big Ten first. We need people to score in the Big Ten and in the NCAA Tournament as well. And as an extension of that, we would like to get people onto Olympic teams, whether it be Turkish, South African, Canadian or U.S. 4
Assistant Coach Kathleen Milloy Kathleen Milloy is beginning her second season as an assistant coach for the Spartan men s and women s swimming program. Milloy joins the MSU staff after serving three years as an assistant coach at Clemson. While with the Tigers, Milloy coached six women that qualified for the NCAA Championships and three ACC Championship relay teams, each of which produced school records. Prior to her tenure with the Tigers, Milloy was an assistant coach at Toledo. She also was the Senior Swim Coach of the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club. She coached 13 athletes at the 1997 Summer Junior Nationals and three athletes at the 1997 Summer Senior Nationals. The Ottawa, Ontario, native also served stints at Tennessee and Brown. While with the Volunteers, Milloy coached the school s first NCAA Champion in the 50-freestyle. From 1992-95, Milloy assisted at Brown, where she aided in rebuilding the women s program. Milloy graduated from Tennessee in 1991 with a bachelor s degree in psychology. Assistant Coach Eric Best Eric Best enters his second season as the Michigan State men s and women s diving coach. Best served as the diving coach at West Bloomfield High School from 1991-2002. During his tenure at WBHS, he coached 26 state meet qualifiers, including six state finalists and two All-Americans. He also spent one season (1980-81) as the diving coach at Oakland Community College, where he coached two NJCAA qualifiers including a fifth-place finisher. He has been an integral part of the MSU Diving Camp since 1980. Among his responsibilities are supervising the program, coaching, spotting and delivering lectures on training techniques, diving mechanics and goal setting. Best was a member of the Michigan State diving team from 1979 to 1982. He is a 1992 cum laude graduate of Wayne State University where he earned his bachelor of science degree in secondary education. Since 1999, he has been a math and science teacher at Walled Lake Consolidated Schools with previous teaching experience in both the West Bloomfield and Royal Oak School Districts. Assistant Coach Richard Mull Richard Mull enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Spartan men s and women s swimming teams. A lifetime resident of the Lansing area, Mull swam at Michigan State from 1963-1968. After graduating from MSU with a degree in English, he became head coach of Okemos High School (1970-74) where he was named Michigan High School Coach of the Year in 1974. He was then appointed as the head coach at Lansing Community College, earning Region XII Coach of the Year honors in 1979. IM-WEST OUTDOOR POOL The IM-West outdoor pool, which was built in 1959 for $139,000, underwent a $650,000 renovation in 1996. The 50-meter pool was the sight of the 1959 Pan American Games. The pool holds 800,000 gallons of water and has a diving L at the southeast end with a 10-meter diving tower. The shallow end is four feet deep, tapering off to six feet deep with a drop of 16 feet in the diving well. McCAFFREE INDOOR POOL The Charles McCaffree Pool is housed in the IM-Sports West Building, which was built in 1957. It is a fast, competitive arena with incredible crowd noise and remains one of the preferred pools by coaches to continually host the high school meets. The first meet held at the pool was the 1959 Big Ten Championships. The pool is named for MSU s legendary swimming coach, Charles McCaffree, who guided Spartan swimming from 1942-1969. 7
THE FLUME Michigan State swimmers have access to a state-of-the-art flume located in the Duffy Daugherty Football Facility. A flume is a swimming treadmill that directs a carefully controlled laminar (all waves parallel) flow of water at a swimmer. Coaches can videotape swimmers through glass windows on the side of the flume and analyze stroke patterns. Working out in the flume also provides coaches and swimmers with useful information to help design training and competition strategies. 8
