Drill Drill Description Equipment 10 Pass Invasion Dividing the group into two teams in a designated area (preferably a square) teams are to perform 10 passes between them without the opposing team invading/intercepting it. The ball will be changed over when it is dropped or intercepted. Cones One ball Two sets of coloured bibs to separate teams Catch the Opposition Divide into two equal teams 10mX10m grid Teams line up on opposite corners, 3 steps back from the cone Running around the square holding the footy trying to catch the opposition (one player from each team at a time) passing to the next player of the team when they are one cone away from where they started. Team wins when they catch the opposing team Cones 2 balls 4

Red Rover Depending on the amount of people involved, have 2-4 defenders standing in the middle of a grid (make the size according to how many participants) The rest of the people stand at the end of the grid with tags on and wait until one defender says red rover cross over They then run to the other side of the grid and try not to get tagged in the middle by the defenders Cones Tags Rob the Nest Split players into 4 even teams. Each team has a designated cone (nest) At all times only one player from each team can be in play. The aim of the game is for each team to collect as many balls as they can. First all the balls must be collected from the middle until they are all gone, then players are open to steal from other teams nests. Have a designated time, at the end of this, the team with the most balls is the winning team. 10 balls Cones Timer 5

Kick Tennis 20m wide rectangle, 5m dead zone in the middle. Players evenly split into 2 teams Teams kick the ball back and forth to each other The ball must be caught on the full, otherwise closest member to the ball is out of the game. When kicking, the ball cannot land in own area, in the dead zone or outside markers, all resulting in the kicker out of the game. Last player standing is the winning team Ball Cones Tees and Drinks Using a large amount of cones, place them randomly in the space you are using. One team is to turn the cones into drinks (turn cones upside down) and one team is to turn the cones into tees (turn cones so they are like a kicking tee) Provide a time limit for which participants race to see how many their team can achieve (eg. 1 minute) The team with the most tees or drinks wins! Lots of cones Opposites Set up a box with everyone in the middle 6

Coach calls out STOP, GO, UP and DOWN and everyone has to do the opposite, for example coach yells UP and everyone has to drop, coach yells stop and everyone has to go. 7

Side Step 3 10m x 10m grid Stage 1 2 players on opposite corners run towards each other - stepping off the same foot to avoid collision, then proceed to the opposite corner Stage 2 Players from all four corners start at the same time, stepping when they approach each other Stage 3 Use the same set up at stage 2, however players must carry a ball in hand progressing from a two handed carry to a one handed carry as if they are facing a defensive set. Cones Balls Swerve 5m x 20m area Drill begins with players swerving around the markers which are approximately 5m apart Defenders are positioned where the markers are, however they are not 10 Balls Cones Tags Belts

allowed to use their arms Defenders simply step towards the attacker forcing them to widen their swerving run Progress by widening the distance (up to 8m between defenders) Defenders can now use their arms as well as step and attempt to tag the attackers Side on Evasion 15m x 20m Attacking player moves from the starting position with the ball in two hands After rounding the first marker, the attacker must react to the movements of the defender If the defender has come across too far, the attacker may step on the inside of the defender If the defender has not come up far enough, the option might be to accelerate away using the sideline Balls Cones Tags Belts 11

Evasion Channel 1 40m x 20m grid Players are divided into two equal groups Defenders are positioned on markers, given a number 1, 2 or 3 Once the coach calls one of those numbers, the first attacker is to run down the channel and the defender who s number was called attempts to tag the attacker As the defenders are positioned differently, the attacker is confronted with a single defender coming from different positions and angles Cones Balls Tags Belts Pick the Gap Players are divided into two groups (3 attackers, 5 defenders) Attacking group must movie down the channel attempting to score at the other end The defenders line up across the channel, with a fourth defender just behind them and a 5 th defender at the far end of the channel As P2 approaches the defenders in front, D4 moves into the line of defence making P2 make a decision on how to pass this line of defence Once past the defenders, P2 draws D5 towards them before offloading to P3 12 Cones Balls Tags Belts

Evasion Grid 1 15m x 20m grid Equal number of players are positioned on three corners of the grid The first attacker runs out on a diagonal line across the grid The first defender (P1) runs out at the same time from the other diagonal and acts as a moving target for the attacker to practice their side step The attacking player should step on the inside of the defender, and then quickly adopt a line that gives her/him the best chance of beating the second defender (P2) Extension Make the grid bigger, bring in another group of defenders who are closer to the try line which will defend the attackers from a more front on position, rather than coming from the side like the other groups Cones Balls Tags Belts 13

Drill Drill Description Equipment Correct Grip Need technique In pairs sit on ground with arms under legs, ball in middle of legs. Squeeze ball into air and catch. Making sure only finger tips are on the ball at all times Progress on squeezing ball to partner Carry In Traffic P1 has a ball and stands toe to toe with P2. P1 must hold ball in one hand and use the other to fend P2 off. P2 is aiming to knock ball out of P1 hand. To progress from here give both P1 and P2 a ball and aim to knock opposite players ball out Corner grip and score- Have square set up 4x4m. Have two even groups on 2 opposite corners. P1 is on 1 corner and P2 is on the opposite. P1 throws ball to P2. P2 then has to catch ball in 2hands use footwork and score opposite sides of square. Cones Balls 16

Ball Handling Realy Split into even teams Using ball handling skills such as 1 Hand Passes, 1 hand juggle, alternate 1 hand catch, 1 hand catch from partner, passing around the body and through legs to race the other team. Balls Cones Ball Carrying Ensure players are holding the ball correctly with two hands Within a designated square players are to run around holding the ball in one hand with a firm grip whilst trying to knock the ball from other players hands Once the ball has been knocked out of their hand, player can pick up the ball and continue or pass to a player outside of the square so they can have a turn (if there isn t enough balls then use the second option) Extension (picture) Two players are it they have to tag other players by holding the ball in two hands and touching them Balls Cones Bananas Mark out a 5m x 5m square with cones. Even numbers on each cone Starting off with one ball at one corner the player passes to the corner next to them, following the direction of the ball the player that has just offloaded runs an arch to receive the ball back to the offload to the opposite cone that they started on. Drill Drill Description Equipment Passing Box Have lines of 3-5 players 5m apart Cones Players pass along the line using the correct technique for catching and passing Balls Option 1 have cones set up in order for players to ensure they pass before the cone Option 2 Once they have ran through to the other end use two players for a play the ball and the other two plays running onto the ball Channel Passing 15m square marked out with cones Have players split into 4 even lines and spread equally between the cones. Start with simple running onto the ball passing with correct technique and catching with correct technique, players run around the cone at other end and do the same thing on the way back. Extension: Shorten length of running space to put more pressure on the pass Extension: Split half the group and go down the other end and do the same thing. Running into the channels of the other group. This will put even more pressure on the ball carrier and timing of the pass in traffic. Extension: Instead of just running straight lines, add in switches, wraps and set plays. Cones Balls Peeling drill Players pair up and jog between the cones whilst passing to each other until they reach the end of the cones When the pair reaches the end they peel out each side of the cones and jog back whilst passing between the other pair which are running in between the cones 20 Cones Balls

This encourages passing within traffic and timing passes well so they don t interfere with the pair running inside the cones On the Run Players line up on the blue or red cones One player starts at the green cone and makes their way through the centre On the way through the green player will receive the ball from the red cone and pass to the red as quickly as possible This continues right through the channel On the way back it will be the opposite, receive from the blue and pass to the red Cones Balls 21

Clap and Catch Players set up in a circle One ball is in play, being passed around the circle, but the receiver must clap before catching the ball. If the receiver of the ball doesn t clap before catching the ball they are out and they sit down in there spot. Players are also aloud throw dummy passes so if somebody claps when they are not receiving the ball they are also out and sit down. Ball Passing Relay Split into two teams and line up on the cones Start with ball at the start of both lines Passing down the line, when it gets to the last player they run to the start and everyone moves down a cone. Winning team is the first to finish and have everyone sitting on a cone 2 balls Cones 24

Catching and Passing Divide participants equally and have them stand in two lines facing each other spreading out with enough room in between them so there is no interference One ball between each pair, performing passes between them to ensure that they are holding the ball correctly and catching it correctly Let them practice first and then see how many passes they can complete within a certain time frame Balls Cones 25

Drill Drill Description Equipment Set Tag Players are to get into pairs and line up opposite each other about 5m apart Start by walking towards your partner (one being the attacker with tags and a ball, and one being the defender) The defender is to simply tag their opponent whilst walking towards each other Increase the intensity by teaching players how to spin and swerve Gradually increase their walk into a run Tags Belts Balls Cones 27

Side to Side Tagging 10mx7m grid One defender stands in the middle of the grid Attackers divide equally on two of the cones at the same end One side starts by running in a straight line to the cone directly in front of them while the defender tries to tag them, once this person has reached the cone a person from the other side runs making the defender slide and chase from side to side Continue this until both sides are at the opposite end Each person has a turn at defending the space All In Square grid - size depending on how many people Each person has a set of tags on The aim is to rip as many tags off other people as you can. Can only take one tag at a time When a player has lost both tags they exit the square until one player is remainding 3on 2 Defence 15mx10m grid 3 attackers and 2 defenders start at the halfway point on the side of the grid Defenders run one direction, attacker run the other way, running around the outside of the cones into the field of play Using the ball, attackers are to use their advantage of having more players, while defensive side defends the opposition and stops them from 28 Belts and Tags Cones Belts and Tags Cones Cones Balls Tags

scoring by ripping their tags off Rats and Rabbits Pairing up and then lining up one metre apart from your partner, back to back, one team are the rats and the other are rabbits Everyone has tags on. When Rats is called, the line that is the rats have to run to the cone whilst the rabbits have to chase there partner and try and tag them. And vice versa when Rabbits is called out. Belts and Tags Cones Tag Timer Set up a 20m x 20m square and split group up into 2 teams. One group are the defenders and the other group are attackers. Have everyone put the belts on but only the attackers put the tags on. When the whistle is blown the stopwatch is started and the defenders have to collects all the tags off the attackers as quickly as possible. Once all the tags have been taken off the attackers the stop watch is stopped. Change over from attack to defence and see if they can beat their time Belts and tags Cones Timer 29

Tag Reaction Drill Defenders line up along the try line, 2 m apart, facing the dead ball line, with attackers stationed behind them back on the 10m metre line. Attackers then altogether run through the gaps between the defenders as the defenders have to listen for the attackers to tag them as they run past Belts and Tags Cones Mirrors Set up a line of cones 3 m apart according to how many players you have (2 players per space between cones) 2 players stand facing each other in between the cones, one attacker one defender. The attacking player slides back and forth between the 2 cones, whilst the defender mirrors them. When the coach blows the whistle, the attacker has to try break the defenders line as the defender tries to tag them. Belts and Tags Cones 30

Drill Drill Description Equipment Attacking and Giving each participant a number they are to lie on the ground in a line Cones Defending at one end. When the coach calls out two numbers the players run Belts and Tags around a cone to the ball. The person who gets it first is the attacker and Ball the other person is the defender. The aim is to score between two cones at the other end. OR When the coach calls out two numbers, the first number called is the attacker which runs around a certain cone to the ball and the second person runs around another cone and is the defender Partner Tag Using the full size of a football field, each person has a partner which is on the opposite team Same rules apply as touch football, (6 touches/tags, passes must go backwards etc) each pair can only tag their partner and no one else. The aim of the game is to get away from your partner and the defensive team to come up with strategies to stop other people from getting through. 32 Footy field Cones Tags Ball

Walk Tag All the same rules as normal tag except players can only walk. If any player is caught running, there will be penalties Ball Belts and tags Cones Broken Play Drill Mark out a 20 x 20 metre square with 4 cones on one side of the square, and one on the halfway on an adjoining side. Players line up on the cones in even lines Cones 1 and 4 are attackers and the one by itself are defenders. Players on cones 2 and 3 start the drill by passing between each other, when go is yelled, the player that has the ball becomes the attacker and the one without joins the player on cone 5 as a defender The attackers try to score at the end of the 20m square, whilst the defenders try and tag them. Once either tagged or score a try, each player joins a different line to start in. Belts and tags 1 ball Cones 33

Number Tag Set out a 5m wide by 10m long grid Three players at a time lay in the centre of this grid with the coach calling two numbers between 1 and 3 The two numbers called will be the attackers and the number not called will be the defender. The attackers run towards the end where the coach is standing, receives the ball and the defender runs the opposite way The defender is to put pressure on the ball to either force a pass or tag the attacking team This can be varied by adding more players (odd numbers so that attacking team always has a one player advantage) Cones Balls Tags Belts 34

Pass The Defenders Set out a 10m by 20m grid Players are to line up in groups of three at one end Two defenders are to stand 10m in front of them then one defender 5m behind those two defenders The aim is for the attacking team to pass the first two defenders using the overlap and then face the full back towards the try line This drill enables players to use the overlap even after they have passed through the line of defence Cones Balls Tags Belts Defensive Line Using half the field split the players into two equal teams (possibly subs if there is too many) The attacking team is to try and score on the try line without getting tagged Unlimited touches Attacking team is allowed three mistakes OR three tries before it is a changeover Balls Cones Belts Tags 35

2on1 Unders/Overs Have two separate lines on the side of a 6x4m grid Drill Two attackers go around one end and one defender around the other The two attackers aim is to play a two on one using unders Coaching tips Ensure runner times their run and runs correct line with hands up. Make sure attacker uses whole width of the grid. Make sure ball carrier pulls defender away and uses 6 o clock pass Diagram Raiders 3on2 Drill Have 3 lines numbered 1,2 and 3 Have a grid marked 5x10m Coach calls out two numbers and throws one the ball They run up, place the ball down at 3m line (marked with coloured marker) continue to the 10m line. As soon as the ball is placed down the next three people in each line run up collect ball and play a 3 on 2 Coaching tips Make sure attackers use full width of the grid. Attackers need to take advantage of the defenders going backwards and run at them with speed Diagram Unders Touch Divide players into two teams One team attacks with unlimited tags Attacking team must run an unders line off every tag Even from the play ball the first receiver must be running an unders line (back towards the play the ball) Referee must be very strict on this to enforce importance of running unders lines To vary the game make it two passes every tag to enforce players to push up Not sure how to do this diagram Defensive Beach Flags Two players start at opposite ends of the grid 7x5m Coach blows whistle and throws ball into the centre of the grid Both players race for the ball Balls Cones Tags Belts Balls Cones Tags Belts Balls Cones Belts Tags 36

Once a player has the ball both players retreat to their starting point and it then becomes one on one tagging Extension Add more players into the game to then create 2on2 or 3on3 Off the Line Defenders start on the try line, attackers start 10m out from the try line On the coaches signal, defenders retreat 4m backwards into the in goal, once they reach the markers at 4m attacking team has one opportunity to score Defenders must pass the try line to stop the attacking team from scoring Extension Attacking plays and set moves must be used by attackers when attacking the line. This will also help attackers do plays under pressure and running them at speed. Ball Cones Tag Belts 37

Number Attack/Defense (See diagram for set up) A number is called out, that player on both teams has to run into the middle, around the red cone, down the outside of there team, around the blue cone and back into the middle of the two teams. A ball is then thrown into play. The first player to the ball and picks it up becomes the attacker, the other player becomes the defender. The attacker then has to score at their tryline whilst the defender trys to tag them Extension Call out 2 numbers to make it 2 on 2, or 3 numbers for 3 on 3 (Note; The more players that are called out, the wider the two lines may have to be 38

Beach Touch Double Touch Same rules apply as touch with 6 touches, backwards passes However the ball can be knocked down and it is still play on for both teams This encourages players to pick up the ball when it is knocked to the ground rather than just a change over Extension - This can be used with or without tags and belts Same rules apply as touch besides two people have to touch the defender with two hands for it to be counted as a touch Cones Ball Tags Belts Whistle Cones Ball Minimum pass touch Normal touch/tag rules apply however there has to be a minimum number of passes made before getting tagged otherwise it is a change over The number of touches/tags is decided by the coach/players 2 Hand Carry Touch Normal rules apply for touch/tag however the attackers must carry the ball correctly in two hands otherwise it is a change over Cones Belts Tags Ball Ball Cones Tags Belts All modified touch games will start with the following set up: 41

Channel Kick A grid is set up with three lines at each end (see diagram) P1 grubba kicks to P2 who then chip kicks to P3 P3 then runs and passes to P2 who passes to P1 P4 P5 P6 repeat drill Cones Balls Minefield Divide players into two equal teams Defending team scatters themselves in the area to protect their space Kicking team takes turns of kicking the ball into the defending area aiming to hit the ground on the first bounce The kicking team loses a life when the defending team catches the ball on the full or the ball goes out of bounds on the full Each team has three lives Once three lives are lost, roles are reversed Extension - More balls can be added, space can be expanded Cones Ball 45

Safe Zone Defending players scatter themselves in the grid Player 1 attempts to kick the ball into an open space then run the length of the grid to the safe zone The kicker is out if the ball is caught on the full or if he/she is tagged with the ball whilst running The defending team can pass, kick and run in attempt to tag the kicker Award 1 point for each player who reaches the safe zone, after three outs players swap roles Cones Balls Chip Kick Players line up behind the cones provided and are given a number each When their number is called they run behind their teams line and into the centre Here, they pick up the ball and chip kick it over the tackling bag and regather before returning the ball to the start Tackling bags Cones Balls 46
