Doonbeg Doonbeg, Co. Clare www.doonbeglodge.com The last great piece of links land on the Irish coast Set along 1.5 miles of crescent-shaped beach and dunes on Ireland s southwest coast, Doonbeg, designed by two-time British Open champion Greg Norman is a thinking man s course, with premium on accuracy over power. The majestic dunes, centuries old, reach almost 100 feet. Norman s philosophy of least disturbance has produced a course created by nature and laid out by man. 14 of Doonbeg s greens and 12 of its fairways were simply mowed. The par-72 layout features a single loop of nine holes out and nine back. Variations in wind speed and direction ensure the course plays differently almost every day. The course officially opened on July 9, 2002, with an exhibition match between Norman and Padraig Harrington. Lahinch Lahinch, Co. Clare www.lahinchgolf.com A Legendary Links Founded in 1892, the original layout of the course was the brainchild of Old Tom Morris, four times British Open Champion. A remaining example of his work is the famous 5th hole known as The Dell. 1927 saw the arrival of Alastair MacKenzie, who was a purist in golf design. MacKenzie strongly believed in keeping a natural appearance to the golf course, creating and shaping holes through the dunes and creating greens with subtle contours and movement, rolling with the natural fall of the land. These values and beliefs are still in place today. The Cliffs of Moher All of the luxury accommodation at The Lodge at Doonbeg is comprised of rooms, suites and cottages each one different from the next meticulously designed with hand-selected antiques, reclaimed woods and soft furnishings. Each accommodation enjoys its own individual personality and style, tailored to fit modern demands for comfort, in an understated, yet luxurious manner. This combined with exquisite food served in both the Long Room restaurant and Darby s bar all made from locally sourced ingredients makes Doonbeg the ultimate golf destination. Photo Steve Uzzell FOUNDED 2002 ARCHITECT GREG NORMAN LINKS STANDARD SCRATCH SCORE (SSS) 74 6,885 YARDS The Old Course (Par 72, 6950 yards), which provides a stern challenge to even the most gifted golfers, is justifiably proud of the worldwide acclaim it has received over the years. The notorious Klondyke par five, 4th hole forces the golfer to play over an intimidating dune wall to a blind green. The Castle Course (Par 69, 5488 yards) presents golfers with a slightly less formidable, though equally interesting challenge. Lahinch Golf Club and the village of Lahinch are steeped in golf and its traditions with a welcoming and pleasant smile to greet all visitors. Adare Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort, Adare, Co. Limerick www.adaremanor.com Home to the Irish Open 2007, 2008 Home to the JP McManus Invitational Pro Am 2005 & 2010 The golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr. is situated in the heart of the picturesque village of Adare, Co. Limerick and only a 25 minute drive from Shannon International Airport. Adare Village Dromoland Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare www.dromoland.ie The Course of Kings What more dramatic a backdrop could be to this most challenging and enjoyable course than the world renowned five star Dromoland Castle. In 2003, Ron Kirby and the late Joe Carr redesigned the golf course to the highest standards. It is situated on 410 unspoilt acres of lush wooded parkland enhanced by the gently flowing River Rine, which becomes a feature for three of the many beautiful holes on the course. The natural terrain of the landscape poses a considerable challenge to even the lowest handicap, with a profusion of yawning water hazards and concealed bunkers. Dromoland Castle has earned an enviable reputation both for quality of golf and for the splendidly refurbished Castle Hotel. Its restaurant, The Earl of Thomond, is rated as one of Ireland s outstanding restaurants. The Clubhouse is equipped with leisure centre and swimming pool. The golf course is a mere 10 minutes drive from Shannon Airport. Stretching 7,453 yards from the championship tees, this majestic parkland course includes lakes, historic ruins, subtly undulating greens, many magnificent mature trees and Mr. Jones signature cloverleaf bunkers. A 14-acre lake dominates the front nine and the back nine is routed through a heavily wooded area of the estate, with the beautiful River Maigue dominating the finishing holes and the Manor acting as a majestic backdrop. The 18th hole ranks as one of the best ever designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr. The course was voted No 1 parkland course in Ireland by Golf Digest Ireland Magazine for the past 6 years Adare Manor Hotel has 62 elegant bedrooms and 75 individually carved fireplaces with 52 chimneys, one for every week of the year. To ensure the visitor is spoilt for choice there are 13 two and four bedroom townhouses and 46 three and four bedroom villas. Ballybunion Ballybunion, Co. Kerry www.ballybuniongolfclub.ie A Breathtaking Challenge The legendary Tom Watson described the glorious links at Ballybunion as the best in the world. High praise indeed for this magnificent test of golf, which meanders menacingly through massive dunes on the shores of the Atlantic. Ballybunion actually boasts two separate courses. The Old Course (Par 71, 6,802 yards) and the Cashen Course (Par 72, 6,306 yards) designed by golf architect, Robert Trent Jones Senior. The Old Course, consistently ranked as one of the world s top ten courses, features a graveyard by the first tee, which some say is a warning to golfers who breeze through the first five holes only to come face to face with the ever challenging 6th, the fiendish 8th, the daunting par four 11th and the devilishly tricky 15th. Close by, the Cashen Course, with its succession of formidable par fives and breathtaking beauty, amply qualifies as one of the world s masterpieces. Tralee West Barrow, Ardfert, Co. Kerry www.traleegolfclub.com Built by Palmer - Created by nature Surrounded by the Atlantic, Tralee s magnificent and challenging Arnold Palmer course offers incomparable views on all sides. Castles, distant islands, towering mountains and the beach that figured prominently in Ryan s Daughter will captivate you. Built by Arnold Palmer, this stunning setting represents a true paradise for those willing to challenge what is widely acclaimed as one of the finest links courses in Ireland. It comes as no surprise to learn that, due to the majestic beauty of this setting, Palmer chose it to be his first (and arguably finest) golf course in Europe. Tralee in addition to boasting a clear view of the Atlantic Ocean from every hole, has a fully qualified resident professional, fully stocked pro-shop; a spacious and comfortable restaurant and bar in addition to having earned a reputation for having a most friendly and relaxed atmosphere among members and guests alike. As all the caddies are also members it is not uncommon to find a caddie and guest sharing a pint and a couple of laughs in the comfort of the upstairs lounge after a round. A trip to Southwest Ireland for the accomplished golfer could not be complete without playing this most precious and unpretentious wonderland. Waterville Golf Links Ring of Kerry, Waterville, Co. Kerry www.watervillegolflinks.ie Championship Links, beautiful yet pure - a mystical experience Links land is a geological rarity. Less than one percent of all courses in Europe are championship links. Waterville is honoured to be included among the very best of these in a prestigious Golf World survey. It is one of the oldest Irish Clubs, having been founded in 1889 with the arrival of the trans-atlantic telegraph cable from the United States. After 80 years of play, the famous Irish golf architect, Eddie Hackett and the late owner, John A. Mulcahy, redesigned the original nine-hole course. Waterville House Today Waterville is truly mystical. The course gradually introduces the player to its special tempo and rhythm and concludes with a symphony of links beauty. From Henry Cotton to Mark O Meara and Tiger Woods, all have praised its perfection. Dingle (Ceann Sibéal) Ballyoughterach, Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry www.dinglelinks.com Experience the Magic - 6,696 yards, Par 72 traditional championship links The most westerly golf course in Europe. Each hole on this magnificent links is carved from the natural landscape of one of the most unspoiled parts of Europe, with hazards laid down long before the game of golf was dreamt of, including a winding burn that twists and turns through the entire course. As you play, the whole panorama of the Dingle Peninsula is revealed - hidden bays with small fishing villages, glorious hills and mountains and the Blasket Islands out in the wild Atlantic. This area abounds in archaeological treasures, wild flora and fauna, arts and crafts and ancient Gaelic culture. The Irish language is still spoken here. Slea Head The Clubhouse is unique with ocean vistas, golf art, antique memorabilia and the warm ambiance of its members. The restaurant and pub feature fresh seafood, Irish Fare and the best pint in Kerry, all served by the glow of turf fires. The Links resort includes Waterville House, the Directors residence, and a four star 18th century manor. Guests enjoy preferential access to the Links and one of the finest salmon and sea trout fisheries in Ireland. Killarney Killarney, Co. Kerry www.killarney-golf.com Dooks Dooks, Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry www.dooks.com A truly traditional experience Golf has been played in Dooks since 1889 and is the oldest Club in Kerry and one of the oldest in Ireland. Dooks was originally a nine-hole course and in 1970 the members designed and constructed a second nine. In 2002 the Club engaged the services of renowned links architect Mr. Martin Hawtree to enhance the layout of this visually stunning seaside gem. Hawtree truly lived up to his reputation and today, Dooks, with its gentle rolling sandy fairways looking out at breathtaking views of Dingle and overlooked by the magnificent highest mountains in Ireland, the McGillycuddy Reeks, is a golf experience not to be missed. Dooks, renowned for its friendly atmosphere offers excellent value for money and for golfers who want a real taste of traditional links golf at its very best, this little gem presents a convincing case. Spectacular Golf, Spectacular Scenery After the rough-and-tumble of the traditional Irish links courses, the tranquil beauty and somewhat gentler pace of Killarney s three parkland courses offers a welcome respite. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is located on the shores of Lough Leane amidst the stunning backdrop of Ireland s highest mountain range, the MacGillycuddy Reeks. The area itself is known as Heaven s Reflex due to its outstanding beauty. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is the only 54-hole golfing resort in Ireland with three Championship Golf Courses; Killeen, Mahony s Point, and Lackabane. Superb holes abound here on each of the three courses. The 10th on Killeen is a firm favourite where you are playing virtually onto the lake, while the 18th on Mahony s has been described as one of the most memorable holes in golf, a par 3 requiring a shot over Lough Leane to a bunkered green. The club, which is one of the oldest and most internationally recognised in Ireland, has hosted many major National and International events, most recently the 2010 & 2011 Irish Open. Come for the Irish golf experience and see why the spectacular location, unrivalled choice, range of facilities, customer service and international reputation will make you want to come back again and again. Old Head Golf Links Kinsale, Co. Cork www.oldhead.com Cork Little Island, Co. Cork www.corkgolfclub.ie Scenically situated in Cork Harbour, the club has played host to major Amateur and Professional Championships over the years, including the Irish Open, Irish Professional Championships, Irish Close Championships and the National Finals. This championship parkland course is as graceful and mature as its age would suggest. Cork Golf Club was founded in 1888 and in 1927 the club were fortunate to secure the services of MacKenzie to re-design their existing course and under the critical eye of his assistant Jack Fleming, MacKenzie drew up a design which made full use of the dramatic terrain which is unique to Cork Golf Club. The large undulating greens are fast and true. Getting tee shots into position to approach them is a large part of the challenge - there are several long carries from the tees. Cork is truly one of the finest challenges in Ireland. The scenery and variety are an added bonus and they all combine to make Cork Golf Club a true golf discovery. Cork Golf Club is proud of its associations with the many famous and dedicated people who have contributed towards its success and its ranking among the famous golf clubs of the world. Most people commented that it was probably the best overall tour and the group has been making the annual trip now for 7 years. And this is even taking the weather into consideration! The South West Courses were even better than you described and the the craic second to none. Mark Elston, UK We really love what you do for us - you make the golf dreams come true! It was perfect. Cheney/Kohler Group, USA Thanks for organising a wonderful trip to the South West last Aug. We look forward to the same again this year. No golf life is complete without a trip to the South West of Ireland. And while the golf is incredible, the pilgrimage to Ireland is about more than just the golf. Much more. It s the warmth of the people, the music, the sights and sounds, even the smells. Each year I go to Ireland and its like coming home after a long journey. And I don t even have one drop of Irish blood in me. Thanks again Charlie Rymer Golf Channel Dublin and Belfast airports, the ferry ports of Cork, Rosslare, Dublin, Belfast and Larne, are all within easy driving of South West Ireland. Planning your visit Things you should know... The Euro () is the currency of The Republic of Ireland, while the Pound Sterling ( ) is used in Northern Ireland. Currencies can be purchased at banks or foreign exchange departments. Normal banking hours in Ireland are 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. ATMs are freely available in most towns in Ireland. Major credit cards are accepted in shops, hotels, restaurants etc. These are available in limited numbers at all SWING courses and vary in cost depending on whether they are senior, junior or bag pullers. Caddies can be requested in advance but cannot be guaranteed as they are not employees of the clubs. Senior and junior caddies will normally carry 2 bags (a double) and it is advisable to hire at least one caddy per fourball. Fees are cleared with the caddy master and tip is at the discretion of the golfer but a minimum of 10 per bag is recommended. Before you go... To ensure a successful and enjoyable trip, it is advisable to book well in advance. It is not unusual for visiting golfers to book 12 months in advance. The main season runs from April to October but golf can be played all year round, weather and course conditions permitting. September is the busiest month and July is the quietest month for golf vacations. Always plan and book golf tee times before finalising accommodation and transportation reservations. When planning your trip use our map and driving time grid on pages 4/5 to assist you, as driving time is more important than distance in Ireland. There are more tee times available on the weekdays than the weekends. Plan for realistic numbers when seeking suitable tee times. If hiring a vehicle, always ensure it is large enough to carry golf clubs and luggage. Our recommendation is a space wagon or people carrier for 4 golfers. A chauffeur driven coach is a good option for groups of 8 or more. Your chauffeur will coordinate your travel plans and daily activities, ensuring comfort and relaxation during your stay. Do request caddies in advance. Most senior caddies will carry two bags (double). It is advisable to take a least one caddy per fourball. While Ireland s summer climate is temperate and pleasant, it is advisable to bring wet gear and also pack a few sweaters for the evenings. Always take out travel insurance. For advise on any of the above contact your tour operator or SWING. It is advisable to take out travel and medical insurance before you leave home. In the event of an emergency: Dial 999 or 112 and ask for the emergency service you require. A doctor is available in most towns. Pharmacy stores are widely available but if you are on prescribed medication it is useful to bring an adequate supply with you or bring a copy of your prescription in case of emergency. The standard electric outlet is 220 Volts AC. To use your personal appliances you will need a plug adapter that will fit the flat threepin or round two-pin socket. We recommend universal adaptors which can be purchased at airports. All rental vehicles in Ireland are right hand drive and travel on the left hand side of the road. If an automatic vehicle is required then it should be booked well in advance of travel date due to limited supply. It is advisable to rent a GPS or bring your own with you. The customary tip in Ireland is 10 to 20 per cent. Hotels and restaurants may include it in the bill in the form of a service charge. It s not customary to tip in pubs unless you have table service. Tipping porters, taxi drivers, hairdressers etc is at your own discretion. Nowadays as most people have cell phones or smart phones you should check with your service provider with regards to charges for use on overseas travel. In general hotels and guesthouses will have internet connections or wifi and most towns will have internet cafes. Prepaid call cards are available in many general stores. Club hire is available at all the SWING clubs through the Professional/Golf Club Shops. It is advisable to book in advance. Bring your own golf shoes. Pull carts are available at all clubs for a small fee. Electric carts are available in limited numbers at most of the SWING courses. Some of the links courses do not permit the use of electric carts. These should be booked in advance. Golf lessons can be arranged by SWING with the resident professional. It is advisable to book lessons in advance of travel date. Smart casual attire is expected at all SWING clubs. Knee length shorts and collared shirts are permissible. All SWING golf clubs offer full bar and catering facilities and golf apparel and souvenirs can be purchased at the well-stocked pro shops at each location. what the pros say! 20 swing 21 swing

Places of Interest/ Sightseeing Not alone does South West Ireland provide the best in golf but it has its own ancient and rich history. Geological movements of the earth s plates gave us lofty mountains and seascapes. Volcanoes created islands like the Blasket Islands off the coast of Co. Kerry. Glaciers carved out lake filled valleys like Killarney and the receding ice allowed for magnificent woodlands, flora and wildlife to evolve. Megalithic tombs and monuments older than the pyramids are found throughout the region. Visitor centres and museums such as the Burren in Co. Clare and the Cobh Heritage Centre in Cork, which depicts the last port of call for the Titanic, can help you relive times past. The many outdoor activities include, hill walking, cycling, horse riding, shooting, fishing, sailing and surfing as well as participation in the annual festivals and horse racing events held throughout the region. Visitors can observe the Irish express their culture through poetry, song and dance, with every town and village having its own traditional performers, not to mention our Gaelic footballers and hurlers. Better again, why not join them in their fun while downing a pint of the Black Stuff in our famous Irish Pubs.
