Northglenn Aquatics Lesson Program Schedules on pages 10-11 The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program features a progressive multi-level instructional approach to maximize participant success and includes the most current biomechanics and stroke descriptions for the front crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, back crawl, sidestroke, butterfly, starts and turns, and new diving progressions. Along with Learn-to-Swim are Parent and Child Aquatics courses, revised to emphasize safety skills for both parents and children, and three new Preschool Aquatics courses to specifically address the developmental needs of young children. Parent/Tot - Guppies Ages: 6 months-3 years One parent per child in the water This class is designed to educate parents on how to teach basic water adjustment for their infants or toddlers who have no water experience. This class does not teach children to be accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water. Diapers are NOT allowed. Infants must wear swim diapers or plastic pants under swimsuits. T-shirts are allowed for warmth. Preschool Program Ages 3-5 Starfish Beginners This class teaches basic water adjustment. Emphasis is on holding breath, submerging, and comfort with instructor. Introduces concept of propelling body through water using motor skills. Jellyfish Intermediate This class builds and improves skills from the previous level. New skills are introduced that require students to be comfortable with submerging their head and pushing off the wall independently for a short distance. Most skills are semi-supported. Angelfish Advanced This final level of pre-school will review and expand on all previous levels skills. This class will challenge students to swim independently for longer distances using a semi-developed stroke. 8 Youth Program Ages 6-14 Level 1 - Goldfish Beginners This class teaches basic swimming skills and strokes. It also expands skills previously learned in the pre-school swim classes, turning them into more developed skills. Skills emphasized: Submerge independently, unsupported kicks and streamline on front and back, independent swimming basic front crawl while blowing bubbles. Level 2 - Clownfish Advanced Beginner This class enhances all strokes already learned and encourages more independence and distance. Skills emphasized: Front crawl with proper breathing technique (bubblesbreather) to an intermediate level. Level 3 - Rainbowfish Intermediate This class focuses on improving technique and endurance on front crawl, backstroke, and elementary backstroke. Skills emphasized: Introducing sidestroke kick, treading water, and diving. Level 4 - BlueFish Experienced This class focuses on increasing skill endurance and deepwater work. Skills emphasized: Sidestroke, deepwater surface dive, dives off block, and swimming start off deck. Level 5 - Sailfish Advanced This class teaches breaststroke and focuses on increasing endurance on strokes already learned. Skills emphasized: Starts off block with streamline, open turns, treading water, and counting yards. Level 6 - Swordfish Expert Objectives are to take all strokes and learn to swim with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness. The class also focuses on refining basic diving skills: Shallow dive, jump tuck dive, and pike dive. Adult/Teen Ages: 14 and Older Adult/Teen classes are designed to meet the student at their level, whether they are looking for stroke refinement or just to gain confidence with basic water skills. The instructor will work with each student individually to help accomplish individual goals. Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons Available for all skill levels ~ from terribly terrified to stroke refinement. For more information, please call Steve Hanson at 303.450.8942. Swim Teams The City of Northglenn is proud to offer a wide variety of aquatic programs for all ages and abilities. Staff strives to offer new and exciting programs, and the 2011 line-up is no exception. In 2006, after careful review of our lesson program, it was apparent that after a swimmer had progressed through the Learn to Swim program, there was no progression to continue and advance their knowledge of swimming. The Northglenn Snappers CARA recreation swim team was developed to add a natural progression. Three years later in 2009, many of those recreational swimmers were ready to move to the next level into the competitive realm of swimming. To aid these swimmers in achieving this, the Northglenn Fusion USA Swim Club was developed. After a year of successfully running two teams with differing abilities and goals, a new group of swimmers has emerged. Those swimmers want more than a recreational team but some are not quite ready physically or mentally for the demand of the competitive club. We are proud to offer a new place for these swimmers to go. Our new developmental team will help close the gap between our CARA recreational team and our USA competitive program. All three of the teams require a tryout process for placement on the appropriate team. Please contact Steve Hanson at 303.450.8942 for more information and to schedule a tryout. Northglenn Snappers Colorado Association Recreational Athletics (CARA) www.northglennsnappers.com Designed for ages 6-18 who are interested in swimming as a sport but have little or no experience. Swimmers must be able to complete a minimum of 25 yards doing two out of the four major strokes. This is a great chance for your child to be introduced to swimming as a sport. Coaches will teach fun competition and good sportsmanship. Registration is limited. Fee: $105 Residents/$115 Non-Residents Returning member registration: April 15-19, $10 New member registration: April 22-26, $15 M/W: 4-5 p.m. T/TH: 4-5 p.m. T/TH: 5-6 p.m. Friday: 4:15-5:15 p.m. Northglenn Fusion The mission of Northglenn Fusion Swim Club is to promote the sport of swimming to children and young adults while also teaching life lessons along the way. Our goal is to send these swimmers out to better the world while using swimming as their guide. We not only want to emphasize the competitive side of the sport, but also personal achievement. There are currently seven levels available for swimmers to explore their love of swimming, each emphasizing differing aspects of competitive sport. Swimmers practice three to six days per week depending on the level they are at and attend one to two USA Competitive swim meets per month.
