Tucked away in Zambia, along the meandering banks of the mighty Zambezi River, lays Mvuu Lodge The Place of the Hippo. This laid-back hideaway is situated about 18 km from the Lower Zambezi National Park in the Chiawa Game Management area and right opposite Mana Pools. Wild animals roam casually through the unfenced camp, providing you with a truly unforgettable experience. Being an area rich in wildlife, game viewing is exceptionally rewarding by boat or in an open vehicle drive through the bush. Our group has five game drives included that will be allocated throughout our stay to fit with everyone s requirements. The challenge of catching the renowned tigerfish from the banks of the great Zambezi River or from a boat provides you with the opportunity to lose yourself in the adrenalin rush. Relax with a sundowner, great food and warm hospitality on the open aired deck, overlooking the river. Finish off the day around a blazing bonfire in the boma as you listen to the sounds of the African bush... WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO FISH THE LOWER ZAMBEZI The Lower Zambezi is the portion of the Zambezi River that runs between Lake Kariba and Cahorra Bassa. As such, the flow of water through this section of the river is more controlled than other regions due to being downstream from Lake Kariba. The river has very healthy fish populations as well large numbers of hippo, elephant and buffalo in the region. At Mvuu, you will primarily target tigerfish drifting with bait. This happens in two ways: you can either buy bait at the Lodge or you can target some of the smaller tigers, bream or chessa fish by spinning with little Mepps lures or fishing with worms. Once you have caught your live bait, then your guide will fillet it and you can begin drifting for tiger. Simply lobbing the bait overboard, the current will drift it about 30m away from the boat and you wait for the hit. The bait will usually be picked up by either tigerfish or vundu (enormous lower Zambezi catfish). Tigerfish are known for their hard jaws, fearsome teeth and incredible acrobatic jumps once hooked and the golden rule is strike harder than you think and keep that rod tip down! The boats at Mvuu are a mixture of fibreglass pontoons and aluminium cruisers that will allow for maximum manoeuvrability if you get stuck into a trophy fish! Rod and reel are available for hire at Mvuu and bait and a selection of lures can be purchased at the lodge.

Following your afternoons fishing, you will have an opportunity to shower and freshen up before meeting up in the bar for drinks and dinner. FISHING TIPS & TACKLE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UPPER ZAMBEZI DAYS 11 13 A Typical Day at Sekoma Island Lodge... A typical morning at Sekoma begins with early morning tea and coffee and porridge before heading out for some fishing on the Upper Zambezi River. Return for brunch on the Sekoma deck and thereafter, there is time for an afternoon siesta or relaxing time around the pool. Meet again on the Sekoma deck for high tea before departing for your afternoon s fishing, birding walk or sunset cruise. Return after sunset in the evening for a shower before meeting around a roaring fire in the boma for dinner. The Upper Zambezi is the portion of the Zambezi River that runs from the source of the river to the Victoria Falls. As such, the flow of water through this section of the river is far more dependant on natural rainfall and vast stretches of this river form enormous floodplains that are a vital breeding ground for small fish. This essentially allows the river to re-stock itself. This part of the river generally flows a bit quicker and there is also less wildlife occurring on the banks of the Upper Zambezi river these days. At Sekoma, your fishing will be completely different to the Lower Zambezi in that you will probably do most of the fishing with lures and spinners. Trolling 9 13cm hard body minnows behind the boats for tigerfish or spinning in the rapids or drop offs is the most successful method of fishing at Sekoma and it is not uncommon to land five or six fish in a session. Remember for every successful strike, expect to miss four other fish! Sekoma will supply you with all the tackle required as well as the guides to point you in the right direction. You may also have the opportunity of catching a three spot bream or the nembwe two very good fighting and wonderful eating fish that hide amongst deep structure and mud drop offs along the river banks. The boats at Sekoma are flat bottom aluminium swamp cruisers with carpets taking a maximum of three anglers.
