Time for us to enjoy and play at the Club and on the water. I wrote the following short piece a couple of years ago and I think it still has merit for all of us. My wish for the month of May is for all of us to be watchful of not only ourselves but our fellow sailors. Enjoy and I m looking forward to seeing you on the water and at the Club. The next time you are at the Club on Friday night, look around the room because the following incident could be you or someone you know and love. So, there we were enjoying another great Friday night dinner prepared by caring members of our Club and, as everyone starts to leave, there is an invitation to come on down to a boat and continue having a good time with friends. Arriving at the boat, all of us continued laughing, talking and just greatly enjoying the evening and the company of good friends. The weather was wonderful and It was a nice, warm evening with a slight breeze, perfect Delta weather. As it became later in the evening, the sun goes down, tides change, boats move when you are on the water. Sam and another friend jumped off the boat to aid others in reaching the dock finger safely. However, for whatever reason, I missed the step and went straight into the water. I must have hit my head on the way in. I woke up in the water, disoriented, swallowing water, trying to figure out where was up and out, very dismayed at the prospect of getting out of the water and back on the dock safely. Was I under a finger, was I under the boat, where exactly was safety. It seemed like forever before I regained a sense of reality and broke through to the surface. CONT. This two-day event will consist of a total of five or more races (wind allowing), with three or more races on Saturday and the remainder on Sunday. There will be a Skippers meeting at 1000 Saturday on the clubhouse patio. The first warning horn will be at 1100 Sat and Sun. Trophies will be presented on Sunday after the last race. We all had our moments of glory and our moments of being stuck in a few holes. We hope to see more one design fleets join us next year. Thank you to Kelly Humphreys for running race platform for us both days, and her assistants that floated in and out to call the line, and reset the marks as they occasionally floated off course. Lake Road Lake Merced, CA 95344 Website: Click to Visit Gail Gradle Introduction Continued: Luckily for me, my friends and mate were frantically looking for me and assisted me out of the water. It is no easy task to assist someone out of the water between the boat and finger. If they had not been there to help me, I don t know what could have happened -- would I have been able to get out by myself or swim to shore and climb out on the rocks especially considering the fact that I am not a strong swimmer and did not have a life jacket on. I m one of the lucky ones, nothing hurt but my pride, a few bumps and bruises and a raging headache for about a week, and a few jabs from well meaning people trying to make light of what should have been a funny incident. I really want you to think and see yourself in this situation. For those of you who say this could never happen to me, you are wrong because it could. Browse Events at this Location TIDBIT: Yosemite Lake is about 500 acres and located on the floor of the California Central Valley at the base of the Sierra foothills. Its water surface is about 250 feet above sea level. Page 6 I love our Club and our friends and feel honored to be a part of such a great group of people. In closing, my only wish for those of you reading this, is that you remain as careful as you are and never lose that knowledge that our water is more powerful than we are so don t take it for granted.

2014 SSC Opening Day Prayer Lord of the sea and sky, sun, moon and stars Of winds that blow to horizons far. You dance your rays on gentle waves, Drive foam and froth on rougher days. May your holy breath fill full our sails With gentle zephyr or howling gales. Voyaging near or offshore bound, To good snug harbors safe and sound. Bless us all wherever we shall roam, South Sea Isles or bound for home. God s grace before us and grace to follow Graceful surrounding us to hallow. May we grow in wisdom of your Ways That we be blessed for all our days.
