Day 1 Airport Hunasgiriya: About 5 Hours Drive Mahatenne House Having arrived in Sri Lanka you will be greeted by both our Jetwing representative and your chauffeur guide at the airport itself. Take a leisurely drive into central Sri Lanka s rich forests of Hunasgiriya. Relish the scenic journey as you pass the paddy fields of the low country ascending to the tea plantations and forests of Hunasgiriya. Along the way you will be passing sites of interest such as the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage and the hustle of bustle of cities like Kandy - depending on your flight timing you are welcome to drop by and visit these places. Find yourself surrounded by rolling green hills and listen for the trickle of hidden waterfalls. Day 2 Hunasgiriya Kandy - Hunasgiriya: About 2 Hours Drive Mahatenne House Spend a lazy day adjusting to the Sri Lankan way. At a convenient time, drop by the closest city, Kandy, well known as the centre of Buddhism. During your city tour of Kandy you will be shown the market place, pollah, where locals shop for just about everything from perishables like fruits to material things like clothing. Next, visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses Sri Lanka s most sacred relic, a tooth of the Lord Buddha. The Temple itself dates from the 16th century and is entered through two doors showing mythical beasts. Back at the Ashburnham estate, we suggest you follow the trail around the Ashburnham estate with in search of the stream which breaks in to are not just one but two waterfalls. This private setting is wonderful for a leisurely dip. Day 3 Hunasgiriya Trek: About 4-5 Hours Trek Village Homes Take a short drive to the Hunas Falls hotel where you will meet Jetwing s very own naturalist guide who will accompany you over the next three days. The Hunasgiriya trek offers unparalleled opportunities for walkers to experience and enjoy the different ecosystems, both natural and influenced by human activities, biological diversity, geological diversity and the cultural diversity of the surrounding area. The trek only requires moderate fitness and appropriate attire, but this way you have the chance to catch panaromic views of the Knuckles mountain range which is unknown to most. Day 4 Hunasgiriya Trek: About 4-5 Hours Trek Village Homes Whilst on the Hunasgiriya trek you will be traversing through ten villages including traditional as well as new settlements, tea estates, paddy fields, pinus plantations and grass lands. The trail lies in an undulating terrain and moves along estate roads, footpaths, through paddy fields and some instances it falls along steep climbs. For an authentic experience you will be staying in simple village houses where toilets are very basic. Day 5 Hunasgiriya Trek: About 4-5 Hours Trek Hunas Falls Once your naturalist guide brings you back to the hotel, the day is about being lazy and recovering - we encourage you to plan it as you like. Day 6 Hunasgiriya Belihul Oya: About 5 Hours Trek River Garden Resort Take a scenic drive to Belihul Oya, passing Nuwara Eliya, which is Sri Lanka's tea growing region. During the drive, relish the endless views of tea carpeted valleys, processing factories belching out fragrant aromas and the bright flash of female "tea pluckers" in their pimento, fuchsia and cerise saris picking their way through the plantations. Enroute visit a tea factory where the process of tea producing and grading will be explained. You will also be able to taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea in the factory. Following which you will find yourself descending to the jungles of Belhul Oya where you will be staying at a basic hotel. Day 7 Belihul Oya Hulan Ella: About 5-6 Hours Trek Camping Set off on your jungle expedition in search of the formidable Hulan Ella waterfall. As you hike along take notice the cultural curiosities - you will be passing though small villages, gravel roads, past temples. Feel free to talk to the school children or the locals like the village blacksmith Piaysena. Take a break and step inside the Buddhist temple where within the shrine room you will see a wooden frame with a wooden floor, about eight feet in length and breadth. Day 8 Hulan Ella Duwili Ella - Buttala: About 3 Hours Trek Kumbuk River You will learn that there is an even more majestic and breathtaking waterfall - Duwili Ella. She take a dramatic 80ft plunge from a level rocky ground into a large deep pool at the base. In fact the name Duwilli Ella comes to signify the falling of the water which creates a cloud of spray, resembling a cloud of dust. Spend the morning trekking in search of this as you cross the rivers, pass through the cool shade of the riverine forest and more. Having reached Duwili Ella, enjoy a hearty lunch. Just a short climb up the steps and you will be met by your chauffeur guide who will take you to the eco-lodge Kumbuk River. Day 9 Buttala - Yala: About 2.5 Hours Drive Chaaya Wild Having arrived at Yala, you will learn that the game park is famous for the elusive leopard and has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. The sloth bear and Asian elephant who are also part of Sri Lanka s Big Five can be spotted. Having said that, Yala has much more to share wild bears, peacocks, wild buffalo, sambar and spotted deer. In addition, up to 130 species of birds have been recorded at Yala, many migratory, including the white winged black tern, curlews and pintails. Indigenous species include jungle fowl, hornbills and orioles. With luck you will witness all these creatures over an evening jeep safari with a naturalist guide. Day 10 Yala Airport or to the beach : About 3 Hours Drive + 60 Minutes Air Transfer As all good things must come to an end, your chauffeur guide will comfortably take you to the air taxi or helicopter landing point. Next enjoy a bird s eye view of our paradise island as you are whisked away to the international airport in time for your return flight. Alternatively, you could always soak up some sun on Sri Lanka s pristine beaches which are as close as an hour and a half away from Yala.
