Happy New Year! January 2016 Mokuteki: Purpose One of the precepts of Karate-do You must have a positive and enthusiastic approach to what you have committed yourself in doing because without purpose, there is no direction. I hope you and your family had a restful, relaxing holiday and have renewed energy, ready to approach the New Year with commitment. January is typically a month where we all take a moment to reassess old and create new goals for ourselves for the next 12 months. Regardless of what your martial goal is for the year, we are here to help you succeed! Sentenashi Arts sees everyone who steps through the dojo doors as extraordinary because we are all here to achieve a goal. This takes that little extra time, strength, and dedication, which the ordinary person may not be able to do. Last year ended with our beloved annual Candy Cane Shiai which had an amazing turnout for both competitors, spectators, and demonstrations! There was the true Sentenashi spirit demonstrated in the rings with high quality technical execution and sportsmanship. Thank you to everyone who gave generously from their heart, bringing canned goods and toonies for the Food Bank. The next dojo tournament, our Summer Shiai, will be held on Saturday, July 23 rd, right after the Summer Camp. Another mentionable close to the year was the new Sentenashi Arts syllabus being accepted by the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. Sentenashi is the only karate school that is a certified educational institution in Western. This allows for us to be able to supply all students 16 years of age and older with a T2202A. In order to request a tax receipt it can be done through our website under contact us. This process is done by a third party and can take up to 30 days to process, so please keep this in mind when requesting. Wado-Kai World Cup: Japan 2015 Once again, I along with the competitors that traveled to Japan over the summer would like to thank everyone for all their help over the past year to help make the dream of Japan a reality. Without all your help, the fundraising events wouldn t have been a success. had a strong showing in Japan achieving a gold, silver, and bronze medal with Sensei Kyle achieving a bronze medal in junior male Kata. Congratulations as all your hard work paid off!
Karate Junior National Team Coach Page 2 This year, I was given the opportunity to coach alongside the Karate Junior National Team for Kumite. This position allowed for me to travel and coach the team at events throughout the year such as Junior International Cup, US Open, Junior National Training Camp, Junior PanAm s in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and the Junior World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia. I ended off the coaching year by becoming a certified WKF coach. I am excited to see what coaching opportunities 2016 has to offer! Sentenashi Academy The Alberta Provincial Team had their 2016 selection as the year came to a close, where all 7 of the Sentenashi Academy members where successful in selection, most of who are now repeat team members. Having 7 Sentenashi Academy members on the team makes up 20% of the team s members! These results go to show the success of the academy program and how it helps to make athletes dreams of making the provincial and national karate team a reality. With the right training and dedication to karate, anything is possible! Congratulations to Kyle Fontanilla, Susanah Fallis, and Danae Fell for making the kata team! Congratulations to Sensei Ethan, Kyle Fontanilla, Susanah Fallis, Brooklyn Buckie, Danae Fell, Charlie O Grady, and Devon Khousakoun for making the kumite team! Next stop for these athletes will be the Canadian National Championships in Richmond, BC January 29 th! Keep an eye out for 2016-2017 Sentenashi Academy information. Summer Camp Although we are still in the middle of winter, battling through the snow and -20 degree weather, a great way to keep your mind off the cold is the Sentenashi Summer Camp! This year promises to be bigger and better than ever so watch out for details to come. We will be having summer camp registration on Saturday, March 5 th from 10:00 am 2:00 pm and keep an eye out for more information and special savings that day. Make sure to secure your spot for the best week of the summer. Trust us, you don t want to miss out! Dojo Etiquette With everyone s busy schedules, it is understandable to be late from time to time. Although, as the Sensei s are already in the process of transitioning that next class into their workout, it is hard to keep an eye on the karatiga s that were just dismissed. We ask that if you are running late or if a karatiga does not see their parent or ride there to pick them up, that they be instructed to wait inside. This allows for everyone to be accounted for as well as the fact it is still very cold out and much better to wait inside. Thank you, as you attention to this matter is much appreciated.
What Should I be bring to karate? Page 3 For younger students, we say that you should always have a water bottle with you for class, especially when the weather starts to become warmer outside. If a karatiga has sparring equipment, we suggest that you start to bring that more because we may start sparring more in class during the week, not only on Saturdays. Weapons are also a necessity to bring. Bring your Bo when you know we will be having a Bo focused class and from now on always bring tonfa s and sai s. For the more advanced, colored belts, you should be bring a gym bag with a water bottle, Band-Aids, tonfas, sai s, bo, really anything you think you would need for class to be successful. Tuition Structure All students 15 years old and under are $89.00 + GST monthly. Be sure to take advantage of the Child Tax Credit which has doubled to an amount of $1000 per year. Students 16 years and over are $99.00 + GST monthly. Since Sentenashi is the only karate school with the designation of Certified Educational Institution, adults are able to claim tuition on their tax return. This means your karate training can be practically free! Tax Receipts Please be advised there is now only one method available for requesting tax receipts, by going to our website, and click on Tradition, then Contact Us. Be sure to include all the relevant information asked for. Tax receipts are done by a 3 rd party and will be mailed to you. It may take up to 30 days to process so please plan ahead. Residencies Page 4 If your school has any interest in having a karate residency this year, please let me know or pass our number onto the principal of your school. We really enjoy the opportunity to share the martial arts philosophy to children who might otherwise not have the chance. Most schools are looking for something different to book in for occasional Phys. Ed. Classes, so for those parents active in the schools, please keep your Dojo in mind. Private Lessons There is a wealth of reasons why one might choose to have train privately. The most common reason is to boost confidence prior to a grading. Other frequent motivators are either before or after an absence, to accelerate training or personal interests not usually covered in class. Whatever your reason, we are here ready to personalize and adapt your training to fit your goals. Although Hanshi is quite booked up with ATP (Annual Training Plans), HP (High Performance) & NCCP Instructor/Coach evaluations, as well as coaching the Karate Junior Canadian National Team and Head coach for the Karate Alberta Association, he still has a few choice times available weekdays with a couple weeks notice. As more and more students are becoming interested in private lessons, we now have three Sensei s available for them. Sensei Malakai is available for grading prep. Sensei Ethan is available for grading prep as well as Competitive training and Renshi Steve is available for adults and older students for grading prep and technical refinement. To book a private, call the office and there are different times one can pick with prices associated with length of private lesson. New Positions Available The school is now accepting new members. ONLY A FEW POSTIONS ARE STILL AVAILABLE with a special incentive of $100.00 off the registration fee for families and friends. Our greatest advertisement is word of mouth and we sincerely appreciate your vote of confidence. KANSHA: Thankfulness One of the precepts of Karate-do Be grateful and give thanks for all things you receive in life, learning, and general; being. Sincerely, Sensei D. Strohbach, ChPC Sentenashi (School/Academy) Founder/Hanshi/Chief I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. - Lao Tzu -
