Sports Information Office 1500 University Drive Billings, MT 59101 Office: (406) 657-2100 Fax: (406) 657-2919 Lady Yellowjacket Basketball 2004-2005 Weekly Release #6 December 20, 2004 This Week s Schedule: December 20 vs. Saint Leo (6 p.m., Alterowitz Gym) December 21 vs. Saint Leo (6 p.m., Alterowitz Gym) This Week s Opponents: Saint Leo University Lions The Lions are off to a slow start to the season, winning just once in seven games. They defeated Puerto Rico-Piedras at the beginning of December. Since then they ve lost three straight, falling to Missouri-Rolla, Tampa and Valdosta State. The Lions troubles have come on the offensive end of the floor. They averaged 71 points a game through the first four games of the season, but in the last three games have scored just 39 a night. Turnovers have been an Achilles heel for the Lions. They are turning the ball over 23 times a game while only averaging 11 assists each night. The ball handling troubles have no doubt contributed to their 35 percent field goal percentage. The Lions have three players averaging double figures for points, led by Jenna Drouin who is netting 11 points a game. However, the 5- foot-10 freshman hasn t played since starting the first three games of the year. Rosetta Little and Amanda Halloway are each averaging just over 10 points a game. Little is second on the team for rebounding at 8.4 rpg and has also blocked eight shots. Halloway is adding 5.0 rebounds a game. Marina Arkhipova leads the team at 8.9 rebounds a game and is also adding 5.6 points a night. The 6-1 sophomore from Ukraine has blocked 13 shots in seven games and gives the Lions an inside presence to counter the Jackets three post players. Arkhipova is the Lions only player over 6-foot who plays significant minutes. Opponent Series Records: Saint Leo Games to Date: 0 Monday s game is the first meeting between the schools. Last Week s Results: MSU-Billings 58, Humboldt State 44 MSU-Billings 77, Humboldt State 45 Last Week s Highlights: The Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets handed Humboldt their second straight loss in as many days on Saturday, winning 77-45. The win improved the Yellowjackets to 7-2 on the season and drops the Lumberjacks to 3-7. The Lady Jackets came out strong and kept the Jacks scoreless for the first five minutes of the first half with an early 6-0 lead. The Lumberjacks pulled within one point at the 12 minute mark, but a flurry of Yellowjacket field goals put the Jacks at a 34-22 deficit at the end of the first half. The teams combined for 43 turnovers and 10 steals apiece. The Lumberjacks came within five points of the Jackets at the 11:51 mark with a made field goal by Laura Berreth. The Yellowjackets then had a bench effort of 32 unanswered points and five three-pointers in the following ten minutes of play to put the game out of reach for the Lumberjacks. Shannon Harvey led the Yellowjackets with a career high 21 points and tied the school record with 7 made three-pointers in a single game. Teammate Tanya Petersen had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Robyn Milne led the Jackets with 10 rebounds. Kayla Frize also had a double-digit night with 13 points. I was very pleased with our defensive effort this weekend, said Yellowjacket head coach Kevin Woodin. We really stressed it this week and I felt all of our players made a conscious effort to guard better. We played a solid first half on both ends and I liked our offensive balance. In the second half, you have to give Humboldt credit. They battle back to make it 45-40, but our players responded well. I was happy for Shannon to have such a great night. She works hard and is a pleasure to coach. Our bench played a crucial role tonight and everyone made a positive contribution to this victory. We are looking forward to our games against Saint Leo this week. On a night when baskets were hard to come by, the Montana State- Billings women s basketball team used a surge in the final six minutes to defeat Humboldt State, 58-44, on Friday. Tanya Petersen and Michelle Lieber scored 13 points apiece to lead all scorers. Lieber also grabbed ten rebounds for the double-double. Shannon Harvey had two 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Robyn Milne added six points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She also blocked three shots and handed out three assists. WBCA Top 25 Rank Team Record Pts. Last Week 1. Drury University (21) 8-0 617 2 2.
