As 2013 begins, I would like to take the time to let everyone know what is happening with the Big Sandbar chapter. We have some new board members, and I would like to thank the previous members that have served the chapter well. Kudos to Don Spence, Wendy Spence and Laura Minicozzi for their many years of service to the chapter. As we move forward in the new year, we have many different things planned regarding our chapter. The new board looks forward to a year of many rides and events. I would like to welcome all of our new board members, and I look forward to working with them in the upcoming year. Our new board members are: Ron Wilson as co-director, Alice Moser as treasurer, Kevin LoBasso taking care of membership, and Pip Sarser and Jim Pederson as board members. Layla Ferrante is our new editor of the newsletter. Keep your eyes open for our newsletter, which will be mailed out four times per year and will include all the club events and other cool stuff. If you would like to get involved in any upcoming events or have any suggestions, feel free to contact me or any other board members. Respectfully, Mudfish Dues are Due!! Maryhaven Center of Hope Annual Christmas Toy Run Port Jefferson Station December 9, 2012 O n December 9, 2012, the Big Sandbar Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America once again did their annual Christmas Toy Run to the Maryhaven Center of Hope in Port Jefferson Station. To the best of everyone s recollection, this is the 9th year in a row that Big Sandbar has been involved with Maryhaven. Since being founded by the Daughters of Wisdom in 1930 and now a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, Maryhaven Center of Hope has been assisting children, adults and senior citizens with disabilities. As one of the largest and most innovative multi-service agencies on Long Island, they support more than 2000 consumers of all faiths who range in age from 5 to 80. Donny Spence spearheaded the Christmas Toy Run for the children of Maryhaven with the facilities Ginny Keegan and Jane Rivera. Unlike other Toy Runs where random gifts are donated, Maryhaven gives the club a list of gifts that the children specifically requested, ensuring that every child gets exactly what they asked Santa for. The gift list is split between Big Sandbar and a local car club. Thanks to the generosity of the members of both clubs, every resident at the facility received the gift they requested from Santa this year. Ron Starke, owner of Thunder Bikes in Port Jefferson, invited the club to use his motorcycle shop as our meeting place on the morning of the ride. It was nice to have a warm, dry showroom to hang out in on that rainy, damp Sunday morning. Donuts and coffee were provided by the club and were enjoyed by all (even some of Ron s customers who just happened to be there). Thanks go to Karen and Doug St. John who picked up the tasty treats. On such a cold, wet day, kudos must also be given to club members Pip Sarser, Jim Pederson and Doug St. John (along with Karen St. John in his sidecar) who braved the weather and rode motorcycles to the event. Also present from the club were Claire Sarser; Kevin LoBasso; Ronnie Wilson and his three daughters (Bella, Jojo and Sam); Joe Spoto and Laura Minicozzi; Joel and Ron, owner of Thunder Bikes, with Sandbar ladies (left to right): Layla, Ali, Wendy, Karen, Alice, Claire and Kathy. 4
Kory Happ, Bill and Ali Sharpe; Steve Sorenson and Pat; Gerry Duff; Bob Hurley and his daughter Kathy; Donny and Wendy Spence, along with her sister Crystal Karvecki and her two children; Keith and Alice Moser; and Layla Ferrante. After the event, Karen St. John sent a nice thank you note to Ron from Thunder Bikes for opening up his showroom to us. International Motorcycle Show Javits Center, New York City January 2013 Big Sandbar, in conjunction with the entire Rhinebeck Coalition (Colonial, Hudson Valley, Seaboard and Yankee chapters), had a booth at the International Motorcycle Show. The show was held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City on January 18 through the 20th. Donny Spence, Mudfish, Ronnie Wilson, Lou Re, and Billy and Ali Sharpe volunteered their time to work in the booth for the club. Ed Doring, owner of the Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, let us use this 1923 Harley Davidson FDCA with sidecar. Donny said that whenever members would bring their antique bikes to the show, people would always ask if they could sit on them for photos. Of course that idea didn t go over too well. Turns out, Motorcyclepedia uses this Harley exactly for that purpose. So this year, everyone got to get a photo of themself on an antique bike. Sandbar Holiday Party Above: Donny & Ronnie Below: Wendy & Donny Big Sandbar hosted its Holiday Party on January 27, 2013, at Papa Joe s in Deer Park, NY. This year, 61 members attended. Club members were particularly pleased to see honorary members Jack and Gerri Weber and Bob Hurney at the party. The party gave club members the opportunity to honor some outgoing officers, as well as welcome in some new ones. Outgoing director Donny Spence and his wife, Wendy, were given a beautiful, engraved plaque for their seven years of service. Additionally, new co-director Ronnie Wilson put together a beautiful photo book for them, which was passed around so everyone there could add their own personal notes to Donny and Wendy. Sonny Argent won the 50/50, and as usual, there were plenty of prizes for the raffles. Thanks to everyone who generously donated the prizes.
