3 Wide at Base 1/4 Stroke 1/2 Gap at Top & Bottom The Game of Shuffleboard About the year 1913, a small group of winter tourists in Daytona Beach, Florida conceived the idea of building courts on land; until that time, shuffleboard was exclusively a shipboard game. Those early courts were successful, but the growth of shuffleboard was rather slow, until the end of the 1930s. After World War II, many improvements in layout, rules and regulations began to take place. Shuffleboard clubs were being formed and with the formation of recreation departments, there was improved funding to build new and better courts. The Nidy Company of Central Florida built many of the early new courts. The late Charles Wilbur Nidy was the original owner of the company and was known for the quality of his concrete work. He began building courts in 1924 and retired in 1958. The company was then operated by his son and now his grandson. At this writing, the company has built thousands of courts all over the state of Florida, in addition to having built municipal and private court facilities in 14 other states. All lines measured from center 1 to 3/4 stroke. Shuffleboard has definitely become one of the most popular sports in America today. We have heard more laughter and seen more happiness around shuffleboard clubs than any other sports facility.
