Acquisition information: The records were selected for filming from Main Commission, Record Group 82 and were microfilmed during 1992 and 1993. The microfilm was received at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives on 23 Apr. 1993. Custodial history: The Landrat of the Kreis Briesen created the records between 1939 and 1944. After World War II, these were deposited in the archives of the Main Commission for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes in Poland, located in Warsaw, and subsequently became part of the archival collections at the Institute of National Remembrance (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej) in Warsaw. Administrative history During the second Polish Republic (1919 1920), the town of Wąbrzeźno was restored to Polish sovereignty through the Treaty of Versailles, and made the seat of a county with the same name. After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, the town and surrounding region was re named Briesen, as it had been when it was part of West Prussia during the partition of Poland. At the time of the German occupation, Kreis Briesen was administratively part of the Reichsgau Danzig Westpreussen. After 1945 this territory was returned to Polish control.
