General Information 1. Entry to Competitions a. Entry to club and ProShop stableford and medal competitions is via the PSI machines. Entry on the day. b. Entry to Knockout competitions is also via the PSI. Entry must be before the date of the draw. c. Entry to all other competitions is normally by signing up on the appropriate sheet on the notice board and paying the entry fee by the due date as directed on the booking sheet. Failure to pay by the due date may result in exclusion from the competition at the discretion of the event organiser. d. Payment will be via swipe card whenever possible. This is usually via entering a competition using one of the PSI machines. For events with food/a meal included, payment will be via swipe card at the bar. 2. Conditions of Entry a. conditions of entry are specified in club Byelaw 11. b. Byelaw 11b requires an entrant to have submitted a specified number of qualifying cards prior to the date of the competition. Byelaw 11b applies to all major competitions. c. Byelaw 11e (return of cards in compliance with Rule 6.6b) applies to all stroke play competitions. d. CONGU handicap c status (see Handicaps below) is a pre-requisite for entry to most competitions, including all those to which Byelaw 11b applies. e. Members entering competitions for which they are not qualified as an entrant may be disqualified, but their card will still count for handicap purposes. See item 4.e below. f. The number of qualifying cards required for Byelaw 11b compliance may be reduced or waived for new joiners, at the discretion of the Competitions sub-committee. A new member would be expected to have played at least one qualifier per month of their membership (taking into account any periods when qualifiers are not being played). 3. Divisions a. Club and ProShop Stablefords and Medals are played in two divisions. b. Division 1 is handicaps + to 14, division 2 is handicaps 15 to the current CONGU higher limit. c. Divisions for the Men s and Junior Championships are not standard and are defined under the competition in question. 4. Handicaps a. The maximum CONGU handicap with c (competition) status for an adult male is 28. b. The maximum CONGU handicap with c (competition) status for an adult female is 36. c. The maximum CONGU handicap with c (competition) status for a junior is 54. d. CONGU Club Handicaps (introduced in 2016) allow for a handicap to exceed the normal maximum for an adult, but these handicaps do not carry c status. e. Members without a c status handicap may enter Club and ProShop stablefords and medals for handicap purposes only. 5. Allocation of Prize Money For Club competitions, prizes are allocated as follows: a. For club competitions, a deduction of 15% is made from entry money to cover Competition Expenses. There is no Competition Expense deduction for Junior events. b. A further 10% is deducted for the club professional for all Club stableford and Club medal competitions and for the Hunt Cup, MJ Dunne Cup, President s Bogey and Stan Shaw Cup. c. The standard allocation of prize money is for the first 3 places in each division. A minimum of 2 prizes per division will be distributed. Competitions Directory Page 5

d. A spreadsheet is used which limits the first prize to a maximum of 50 and increases the number of prizes for large entries. The approximate split of prize money is: Total Entrants (both divisions) Div 1 Div 2 1-40 33%, 17% 33%, 17% 41-80 30%, 15%, 5% 30%, 15%, 5% 81-120 25%, 15%, 7.5%, 2.5% 25%, 15%, 7.5%, 2.5% Variations to this allocation are highlighted as appropriate under the individual Event definition and on the Event entry sheet. e. If the total entry is less than 30 players or any one division has less than 8 players the competition will run as a single division event and the prize fund will be adjusted accordingly. If less than 8 players enter the competition will be void (although it will still count for handicap purposes) and all entry fees will be returned. f. Knockout competitions. Monetary prizes to the winner and runner-up. If numbers permit (40+ entrants), losing semi-finalists will also receive prizes. The winner s prize may exceed the 50 maximum. are determined from the standard spreadsheet Competition Expenses (15%) applies g. cash prizes will be awarded. Monies will be added to a member s nominated account (either ProShop or Club swipe card Account). h. Players without c status handicaps may not win prizes in competitions but may take part (unless specifically excluded by the terms of a competition) for handicap purposes. Any player not complying with byelaw 11b may not participate in competitions for which it is a pre-requisite. Entry fees must be refunded to these players. Should a player inadvertently play in an 11b competition for which they are not qualified, they will be Disqualified. i. Club Championship member may win more than 1 prize Competition Expenses (15%) applies for Club Champion and runner-up may exceed the 50 maximum Example based on 152 entries @ 6 per person Place Gross McDonald Goble Haigh 1 100 50 50 50 2 60 40 40 40 3 30 30 30 30 4 25 25 25 25 5 20 20 20 20 6 15 15 15 7 10 10 10 8 7.50 7.50 7.50 6. Knockout Competitions a. The deadlines for completion of each round (as stated on the competition draw sheet posted on the club notice boards), will be strictly administered. b. Members should not enter if they are likely to have prolonged absences during the competition. c. For reasons of fairness to other members, there will be no extensions to deadlines unless caused by course closure or other unforeseeable circumstances. Bad weather/illness are not unforseeable circumstances and hence are not grounds for an extension. Competitions Directory Page 6

d. If any matches are not completed by the deadline it will result in both parties being disqualified from the competition. e. It is the responsibility of ALL players to contact their opponent(s) to schedule their match. f. If, by mutual consent, a match has to be suspended during play, the players shall resume from the hole where the match was suspended, in accordance with the Rules of Golf. The ProShop must be made aware in advance if restarting anywhere other than holes 1 or 10. g. If a match cannot be played by the deadline the competitors (or organising committee) may determine a result by some other means, such as the toss of a coin or a putting competition. te: Playing less than the number of holes designated for the competition is not permitted under the Rules of Golf, although either side may concede a match at any point. h. Holidays, sickness, course closure on the final weekend or restricted access (eg Red course /trolley ban/buggy ban) are not grounds for requesting a playing extension. i. For the Summer Knockouts, if there are more than two temporary greens, a match may only proceed if both parties/teams agree to play. 7. Men s Championships a. Entrants must play in both rounds of the competition unless prevented from doing so by illness or injury b. A player who contravenes this rule may be excluded from the next year s championships, at the discretion of the Committee. c. Any player who is disqualified from round 1 must not participate in the second round. 8. Tee Instructions a. Unless specified otherwise in this document, play will be from the medal tees ie men from the White tees and ladies from the Red tees. b. During the winter period when the white tees are removed, men will play from the Yellow tees. c. The only exceptions are the Watney Mann Winter Foursomes Matchplay when men will play from the White plates and ladies will play from the Red plates and the Wilson Trophy when men will play from the White plates and the ladies from the red tee markers if the white tees are not in place. d. Providing course conditions permit, play may commence from either of the designated starting holes (holes 1 and 10). 9. Tie Break Process a. In an 18-hole event, ties are separated by the best score over the final nine holes. These are the final holes on the standard scorecard. Thus they are the course s 10th to 18th holes rather than the final nine holes a player might have played, which may be different if it was a shotgun or two-tee start. b. If the best score for the last nine holes does not separate out a winner, then the final six holes are used, and, if that still fails to provide a definitive outcome, the final three holes. If a tie still persists then the score on the final hole is used and individual holes working backwards if needed. c. In multi-round events the last 18 holes are first used for countback. If this cannot separate a tie, then the countback method for 18-hole events is then applied, as described above. d. In a Stableford Competition the point scores for each hole are used for the countback calculations. e. In a handicap Strokeplay (medal) competition, rather than use the net scores on each hole, handicaps are deducted in proportion. Thus for countback on the last nine holes half the handicap is applied. f. In the men s club championships there is no tie break for the Club Cup after 36 holes. Instead, extra holes are played as described in Club Cup (Men s_championships). Competitions Directory Page 7

10. Equalisation a. CONGU requires that results in mixed gender competitions take account of any differences in the Par and SSS of the two courses being played. b. At Corhampton the white course is Par 71, SSS 71 and the red course is Par 73, SSS 73. A lady and gentleman playing to handicap in a stableford would both score 36 points and no equalisation would be required. If the same competition was a medal, the man would have carded a nett 71 and the lady a nett 73, so the man would always win! 2 equalisation shots are therefore required to adjust the situation. c. When the men are playing off the yellow course (Par 70, SSS 69) a man s likely stableford score would increase from 36 to 37 points. 1 equalisation shot is therefore required. For the medal a man would card a nett 69 against a lady s nett 73 and therefore 4 equalisation shots are necessary. d. If a competition result is being calculated by the club software these adjustments will be made automatically. e. Equalisation shots must be added to (or subtracted from) a player s handicap before any allowances (eg 0.6/0.4 for Greensomes) are calculated. f. England Golf recommends that in mixed gender competitions all play should be from the ladies card and any equalisation shots should be deducted from the men s handicaps. g. We have 4 competitions that are generally played as mixed gender, but where single gender pairs are permitted when numbers are unequal. In these cases we add shots to the disadvantaged players to balance the team handicap. Wilson Trophy Mixed pairs and single gender male pairs play off the men s (white) card. Charles Lock Trophy Mixed pairs and single gender male pairs play off the men s (yellow) card. Single gender ladies pairs play off the ladies (red) card Par SSS (own card) +/- Team Mean Mixed Pair Man 70 69 +1-2 0 Lady 70 73-3 4 2 Ladies Lady 73 73 0 0 1 Lady 73 73 0 1 2 men Man 70 69 +1 +2 0 Man 70 69 +1 0 Required to Equalise Team 11. Incentive Shots a. There are some competitions where the CONGU Equalisation rules do not adequately compensate ladies. This is especially true in the Any gender team competitions (eg Greensomes, Foursomes, 4BBB, Texas Scramble, ProAm/Bowmaker and match-play) where players are not playing off their own card. For example: In a Texas Scramble, off the men s (white) card, with a team of 4x18 handicap men and a team of 4x18 handicap ladies. The ladies each get 2 shots from Equalisation to compensate for the Par/SSS differences. The ladies handicap allowance is 1/10 of the total handicaps = 8.0. The men s team get 7.2. If both teams play exactly to handicap, the men s team will score 71 minus 7.2 = 63.8 and the ladies will score 73 minus 8.0 = 65. So, even with equalisation the men s team would always win. Ladies need additional shots if they are to compete on equal terms. If the ladies are given 3 additional shots each this raises their team handicap to 9.2 and equalises the scores. Even with a team handicap of 9.2, history has proven that all lady teams still struggle against all male teams, so 4 incentive shots are recommended for competitions of this nature. b. Augmenting the ladies handicaps so that they are able to compete fairly in these competitions is seen as beneficial to the club. More ladies will take part and there is more chance of men being willing to fill team spaces with ladies if they are not being disadvantaged by doing so. c. The additional shot allocation is defined under each event under the heading Incentive Shots. 12. Supplementary Cards a. CONGU permits players of Cat 2 to 5 to submit one supplementary card per week (max 10 per year). Cat 1 players may also submit supplementary cards, but these have different restrictions which can be found in the CONGU handbook. b. The course must be in a qualifying state for a supplementary to be valid. c. The player must register that they are playing a supplementary before they commence play. This is done by entering via the PSI and selecting the supplementary option. d. The supplementary card must be signed by a marker (in the same way as for a standard competition) and the card placed in the section s card boxes. e. It is expected that the player will enter their score on the PSI. This must be done on the same day as the round is played, otherwise the score entry option will not be available. In this case the section s handicap secretary will need to enter the scores. Competitions Directory Page 9

13. Regional Finals a. Anyone who won a men s strokeplay competition in 2016 has qualified to enter the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy, via one of the regional finals documented on the England Golf website. This competition was formerly known as the England Golf Gold Medal. ers Brewery were sponsors of this event from 2006 to 2016, during which time qualification was via a single qualifying round. The club does not sponsor entry to this event. b. The winner of our designated qualifying round (currently the Stan Shaw Cup) will qualify for the Lombard PGA Regional Finals. The club will sponsor the entry fee for the Lombard. c. Daily Mail Foursomes. The leading all-male pair from the Winter Foursomes knockout will represent the club in the Daily Mail Foursomes. Since the 1 st round of this competition is usually played in Jan/early Feb and the winter foursomes do not complete until late March, the representatives are being selected for the subsequent year s competition.
