Knts COMMON TERMS OF ROPE Wrking End is the rpe end that is used t tie a knt Standing End is the inactive rpe end Lp is rpe frmed int a circle, but withut being crssed ver itself Bight is the enclsed area that is frmed by a lp Turn is rpe that passes arund nly ne side f an bject Rund Turn is rpe that cmpletes ne and a half circles arund an bject Bight Wrking End Lp Turn Rund Turn Standing End USEFUL POINTS TO REMEMBER Never use tw rpes f different materials tgether, as nly the mre rigid rpe will wrk under strain A rpe that is twice the diameter f anther has fur times its strength A knt uniting tw rpes reduces the strength f the unit t abut half that f the weaker rpe. 5 Categries f knts 1. Stpper knts Prevent rpes frm fraying T stp rpe frm slipping thrugh a knt r hle T weight the rpe T prvide a handhld t prevent the rpe frm slipping thrugh the hands. Knt Name f Knt Use(s) Thumb Knt Difficult t untie due t strain acting n ne pint Figure-f- Eight Tighter, much easier t be untied as there are mre gaps, lps and cutting which allw equal distributin f frce n the knts. Lp knts Knt Name f Knt Use(s) Bwline It frms an unadjustable lp. Des nt jam r slip easily, despite under severe strain Used t secure a rpe t a ring Manharness The lp can act as a handle fr hauling f bjects. It prvides an alternative t tie a lp in the middle f a rpe instead f at the end. Tent Guy Lp Fireman s chair Tie a slipknt befre inserting the wrking end t it. Thus this creates an adjustable lp. Acts as a pulley giving mechanical advantage in tightening f the guylines It is used t lwer a casualty frm higher grunds PHS NPCC Page 2 f 7 Knts and Lashings Cpyrighted, d nt reprduce withut permissin!
Hitches Hitches are used t tie a rpe t an bject, like spar, r ring Knt Name f Knt Use(s) Clve Hitch Used t start and anchr rpe bstacles. Used t start ff when tying a lashing. Rlling Hitch It is used extensively t start and anchr rpe bstacles. Rund turn and tw half hitches It can secure a rpe t a spar, eye r ring. It is able t turn 360 degrees Timber hitch It is highly adjustable and is ften used fr lgging purpses. Tightness f the hitch depends n the strain n it. Hwever, it is very easy t untie. Highwayman s hitch It can und itself when ne f the ends is pulled. Thus, it applies in situatins that require quick release f rpe Marlinspike Used in nautical activities as well as making rpe ladders PHS NPCC Page 3 f 7 Knts and Lashings Cpyrighted, d nt reprduce withut permissin!
Bends Fr jining tw rpes Knt Name f Knt Reef knt Sheet Bend Use(s) A flat knt, with the tw wrking ends n the same side. Use fr parcel tying as well as First Aid Bandaging because it is flat and easy t tie/untie Can be easily undne by capsizing the knt Jining rpes tgether, especially thse f unequal thickness. Quick and easy t tie and untie. Fisherman s knt Made f 2 sliding thumb knts, which will lck with each ther when strain is applied. Often used in jining slippery rpes r rpes with small and equal diameters. Shrtening Frmatins Knt Name f Knt Sheepshank Chain knt Use(s) It shrtens rpes withut cutting them. It is used t bypass wrn sectin in centre f the knt, it will thus, nt be under strain. Shrten rpes, especially thse f small diameters. It can be undne quickly by a pull. Lashings INTRODUCTION Lashing is a means f fastening tw ples (r spars) tgether. There are 5 main types f lashings, namely the square lashing, diagnal lashing, gyn lashing, rund lashing and shear lashing, each f which is designed fr a particular purpse depending upn what use yu put the ples t. N matter what lashing yu decide upn, it is imprtant that yu tie it crrectly, neatly and securely: Make sure that all the turns are tightened as yu g Ensure there is n verlapping in turns Ensure sufficient turns and frappings are made. Frapping binds the lashings and further tightens them Ensure minimum gaps in the lashings Keep the lashings neat by tucking in the ends f hitches ROUND LASHING Used fr jining 2 ples tgether Used in the cnstructin f flagstaff Methd: Start with a clve hitch arund the bth spars Cntinue with nine r mre turns, tightening the rpe at every half-turn End the lashing with a clve hitch. GYN LASHING Use t bind 3 r mre ples tgether fr the cnstructin f stand (eg. tripd) Methd: Start with a clve hitch n ne f the ples. Wind the rpe alternatively acrss spars. Make a turn abut at the first ple, befre frapping. End with a clve hitch n the last ple PHS NPCC Page 5 f 7 Knts and Lashings Cpyrighted, d nt reprduce withut permissin!
SQUARE LASHING Used fr securing 2 spars tuching and crssing each ther at the angle f 90 degrees. Methd: Start with a clve hitch n the upright spar. Carry the end in frnt f the hrizntal, behind the upright and dwn in frnt f the hrizntal. Wind the rpe alternatively n the tw ples, using the in-ut methd. Make abut 4-5 turns. Frap between the spars fr 3-4 runds. End with a clve hitch n the hrizntal ple. PHS NPCC Page 6 f 7 Knts and Lashings Cpyrighted, d nt reprduce withut permissin!
DIAGONAL LASHING Used t tie 2 spars tgether at angles ther than right angles. Methd: Start by tying a timber hitch acrss spars at the larger angle. Start the wrapping turns n the ppsite diagnal t the timber hitch, i.e. make a few turns acrss the spars at the smaller angle Make a turn arund a spar, befre cntinuing t wind acrss the spars at different directin. Ensure all the wrapping turns are parallel. Frap between the spars, i.e. ging past and arund ne f the ples End with a clve hitch PHS NPCC Page 7 f 7 Knts and Lashings Cpyrighted, d nt reprduce withut permissin!
