Top Finishes in the Sunnehanna Amateur by Area Golfers When Nathan Smith won the 2011 Sunnnehanna Amateur, he became the only area player to win this prestigious champonship. He finished in the top eight or better eight times in nine years, 2003-11. In 2014 he was close again missing the championship playoff by one stroke. He is a member of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Hall of Fame. The players marked with an * below are also members of the Hall of Fame. Several local players have distinguished themselves in the Sunhanna Amateur over the years. *Sean Knapp runner-up in 1994 to Alan Doyle, t4 in 1989, t3 in 1999, 5th in 2000, and three more top 15 s. He has competed in 26 Sunnehanna Amateurs. Bob Reilly, Highland 4th in 1961, t6 in 1963, t2 in 1964. Reilly won the West Penn Amateur four straight years, 1960-1963. Reilly was paired with Jack Nicklaus in the 1956 Sunnehanna Amateur. Justin Smith, Pittsburgh finished 2nd in 2003 and 6th in 2004. He led the Minnesota Gophers to the 2002 NCAA Division I national championship. Charles Kunkle, Sunnehanna involved in developing this championship he finished 4th in 1954, 6th in 1956, and t16 in 1957. He was a quarterfinalist in the 1955 US Amateur, and advanced to match play on several other occasions. *Jim Simons, Butler t4 in 1968, t9 in 1970, t14 in 1972, he won the 1969 West Penn Amateur and twice on the PGA Tour. He was most famous for his strong showing in the 1971 US Open at Merion, leading after the 3rd round, finishing 5th. Bob Friend, Oakmont, t4 in 1985 11th in 1986, he won the 1984 and 1985 West Penn Amateurs and the 2006 West Penn Open. He played the PGA Tour for several years as well. *John Birmingham, Oakmont t5 in 1969, t9 in 1974, t10 in 1973, t13 in 1968, 16th in 1970, Birmingham won three straight West Penn Amateurs, 1966-1968. He qualified for 15 US Amateurs.
*Frank Fuhrer, III, Pittsburgh Field Club--6th in 1982, t-7 in 1980, 9th in 1981, t13 in 1978, Fuhrer is the only area golfer to win the West Penn Amateur, West Penn Open, Pennsylvania Amateur and Pennsylvania Open. Jon Mills, Indiana t5 in 2007. A standout at Kent State, where he teamed with Ben Curtis. Mills won the 2014 West Penn Open and holds the single round championship record with 62. Harry Toscano, New Castle t8 in 1965, he won the West Penn Amateur in the same year. After turning professional he was among the best Tri-State Section PGA players for three decades. Vince Zachetti, Greensburg t10 in 1992, he won three West Penn Amateurs in four years 1991, 1992, and 1994. He also won the 1989 Pennsylvania Amateur. *Arnold Cutrell, Greensburg t11 2006. Cutrell has won 14 WPGA championships,including three West Penn Amateurs and the 1990 West Penn Open. Rick Stimmel, Diamond Run holds the back nine Sunnehanna Amateur course record, 29, recorded in 1997. He won the 1996 West Penn Amateurn and the 2002 West Penn Open. The WPGA Mission is to promote the interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout Western Pennsylvania; to lend assistance to the United States Golf Association; to encourage a spirit of cooperation among golf clubs; to promote the interchange of in formation among Member Clubs; to administer the WPGA Scholarship Fund; to conduct tournaments; to cooperate with other golf organizations; and to coordinate and/or regulate the USGA Handicap System within the area. The WPGA was founded in 1899 to conduct competitions and it remains one of three primary focuses today. The WPGA conducts individual championships, team championships and qualifying round(s) for USGA championships. Additionally, the WPGA Frank Fuhrer teams represent the Association at two events per year. The individual championships are the West Penn Open, Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur, Boys, Junior, Spring Stroke Play, Women s Amateur, Net Championship and the C.R. Miller Junior Match Play. Partners championships include Fred Brand and Semple Brothers, Father/Son, Brothers, and Four-Ball. The Jamison Cup Inter-Club is an invitational for league winners and is open to other clubs at committee discretion. The WPGA, in conjunction with members of the USGA Committees, conducts US Open local qualifiers and sectional qualifiers for the US Amateur, Amateur Four-Ball, Girls Junior, Womens Mid-Amateur, Womens Senior Amateur, Junior, Mid-Amateur, Senior Open and Senior Amateur.
