The Cardinals are coming off a 101-62 win over IU Kokomo in Monday s home opener. Freshman wing Sean Sellers is averaging a team-best 22.0 points per game through two games, including the highest scoring debut ever by a Ball State freshman with 26 points in the season opener at Utah. Fellow freshman Jeremie Tyler is averaging 17.5 points per game after leading the Cardinals with 23 points against IU Kokomo. Ball State is playing its 94th season of basketball and its second under head coach James Whitford. The new-look Ball State roster features eight newcomers this season to go along with five returning letterwinners. Ball State s five freshmen combined last year for a 105-15 overall record, three high school state championships and a prep school national runner-up finish. Sophomore point guard Zavier Turner leads the group of returning players after being gamed MAC Freshman of the Year a season ago. Ball State has welcomed the return of fifth-year senior post player Matt Kamieniecki, who missed the entire 2013-14 season because of a wrist injury. The Cardinals will play the beginning of the season without junior guard Jeremiah Davis, who is expected to return from a foot injury in January. Long Time Coming Ball State put up offensive numbers the program had not seen in a decade or longer in Monday s 101-62 victory over IU Kokomo. The Cardinals scored the most points in a game since 2004 and recorded their best shooting percentage (.623) since 1995. Here is a close look at the offensive numbers from Monday s win... Offensive Category Best Since Total Points (101) Dec. 8, 2004 vs. Anderson (106) Shooting Percentage (.623) Feb. 22, 1995 vs. Bowling Green (.649) Points in a Half (62, 1st) Feb. 22, 1997 vs. Eastern Michigan (67, 2nd) Impact Freshmen Freshmen have led Ball State in scoring each of the first two games with wing Sean Sellers scoring 26 in the opener at Utah and guard Jeremie Tyler scoring 23 Monday against IU Kokomo. The freshmen, both of whom were Indiana All-Stars as high school seniors, lead the team in scoring through two games with Sellers averaging 22.0 points per game and Tyler 17.5. Sellers scoring average is the best among all MAC players in the early going, while Tyler s is tied for fifth in the league. Sellers Shines in Debut Freshman wing Sean Sellers went for 26 points in the season opener at Utah, setting a Ball State record for most points by a freshman in a debut performance. Jarrod Jones previously held the record with 21 in the 2008-09 opener against Eastern Illinois. Sellers shot 8-for-13 from the floor, 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 6-for-6 from the foul line. His 26 points were the fifth-most ever by a Ball State freshman and the most since Bonzi Wills set the school s freshman scoring record with 40 points against Ohio in March of 1995. More impressively, the Cardinals are shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc (21 for 42). The 21 treys are the most for the Cardinals through two games of a season since the 2001-02 team had 25. That team knocked down 13 against Kansas and 12 against UCLA in its first two games at the Maui Invitational. Ball State has not posted three consecutive games with double-digit 3-pointers since that 2001-02 season when the Cardinals did it three different times. Sellers leads Ball State from beyond the arc with seven makes in 10 attempts. Youth is Served Ball State is a youthful team with freshmen and sophomores combining to score 81.5 percent of the team s points (141 of 173) through two games. The Cardinals feature a young roster with a combined eight freshmen and sophomores. Last season freshmen accounted for more than 45 percent of the team s minutes and more than 40 percent of its scoring. Davis Injury Leaves Back Court Thin Ball State will begin the season without junior guard Jeremiah Davis, a Cincinnati transfer who joined the Cardinals midseason last year and is expected to play a key role in the back court. Davis sustained a right foot injury in practice during the last week of October and was projected to miss 8-10 weeks from that point. A redshirt junior, Davis spent two and a half years at Cincinnati before transferring to Ball State in January. He was granted eligibility by the NCAA to play the full 2014-15 season but will now miss the first semester because of his injury. BALL STATE TRADITION 1st NCAA Sweet 16 Ball State was the first MAC team to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after the field expanded to 64 teams. The Cardinals, who reached that round in 1990, are one of five MAC teams to make the Sweet 16 since then. 6 MAC Regular Season Championships (since 1980) Only Miami (eight) has more MAC regular season titles since 1980. 7 MAC Tournament Championships The most of any team in league history. Ohio is next with six, followed by Kent State with five. 7 NCAA Tournament Appearances The second-most of any team in the MAC since 1980 (Miami has eight). 10 All-America Selections The most of any program in MAC history. 29 Ball State s 29 wins in 1988-89 still rank as the second-most in a single season in MAC history. The Cardinals finished that season 29-3. 1,148 All-Time Wins The Cardinals have won 1,148 games in 93 seasons of play. 2,485 Ball State s Bonzi Wells (1994-98) ranks as the top scorer in MAC history with 2,485 career points. He also ranks first in MAC history with 347 career steals. 4 www.ballstatesports.com

MAC Freshman of the Year Returns Point guard Zavier Turner is back for his sophomore season after being named the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2013-14. Turner scored 362 points last season to rank fourth on the Cardinals all-time freshman scoring list. He knocked down 61 3-pointers, the most of any freshman in school history. Turner led MAC freshmen in points (12.1), assists (3.7) and minutes (32.7) per game along with 3-point percentage (.409) and free throw percentage (.880). He ranked in the top 10 among all MAC players in each of those categories except scoring, where he ranked in the top 20. BSU TOP FRESHMAN SCORERS 1. 474 Bonzi Wells, 1994-95 2. 463 Ray McCallum, 1979-80 3. 377 Theron Smith, 1999-00 4. 362 Zavier Turner, 2013-14 5. 346 Jarrod Jones, 2008-09 The Lone Senior Returns Matt Kamieniecki has scored eight points in both games this season, returning to the lineup after missing the entire 2013-14 season with a wrist injury. Kamieniecki is a fifth-year senior and the only senior on the Cardinals roster He played in 74 games through his first three seasons at Ball State and is the team s most experienced player. He averaged 4.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a junior in 2012-13, starting 11 of the final 16 games. House Transforms His Body Sophomore forward Franko House has transformed himself since arriving on campus in summer 2013. He has dropped from 268 pounds to 238 pounds and has trimmed his body fat from 16.7 percent to 7.0 percent. House led all MAC freshmen with 5.2 rebounds per game last year and is primed to be even better in his second season. Stepping into Bigger Roles Walk-ons Rocco Belcaster and Kaleb Mallory have given the Cardinals key production this season. Belcaster, who made his first career start Monday against IU Kokomo, is averaging 5.5 points and 3.0 rebounds plus has hit 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Mallory, a Muncie Central High School product, is averaging 5.0 points and 2.0 assists per game in his role as a backup point guard. He has only turned the ball over once in 33 minutes. A Winning Pedigree For the first time since 1996, Ball State welcomed two players in the same class who were selected as Indiana All-Stars -- Sean Sellers and Jeremie Tyler. Those two are joined in the Cardinals freshman class by Francis Kiapway, Rashaun Richardson and walk-on Tye Wilburn. Richardson will redshirt, while Wilburn is recovering from injury. Tyler and Richardson teamed together to win a class 4A state championship at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech last year, defeating Wilburn s Lake Central team in the finals. Sellers led Greensburg High School to a 3A state title, while Kiapway was on a prep school national runner-up team at St. Thomas More in Connecticut. Those five players led teams that combined for a 105-15 record last season (28-1 for Sellers, 27-2 for Tyler and Richardson, 22-4 for Wilburn and 28-8 for Kiapway). More Newcomers Ball State also brought in a pair of veterans in junior college All-American Bik Gill and Youngstown State transfer Ryan Weber. Gill is playing for the Cardinals this season after earning third-team All-America honors last year, leading Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, to a 25-6 record.
