4-H EXPLORATION DAYS @ MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Come to 4-H Exploration Days and ENHANCE YOUR FUTURE! June 22 24, 2011 Michigan State University 4 H Exploration Days is an annual MSU Pre-College Program that attracts about 2500 participants from all 83 Michigan counties. This MSU Pre-College Program is like no other teen conference you ll ever attend! Choose from nearly 200 action-packed learning sessions from your favorite interest areas. Develop your leadership abilities and enhance your individual growth. Learn new ideas, skills and techniques you can use at home or in your 4 H group and community. Make friends and enjoy leisure activities on the beautiful MSU campus. Ask anyone who has attended 4-H Exploration Days is an exciting experience that can change your outlook. It s an experience that can change your life! We ll look for you this year at 4-H Exploration Days MSU s largest pre-college program! Costs The full-time participant fee is $165. This includes all meals, shared lodging, sessions and an event T-shirt. The commuter fee is $110. Check with your county MSU Extension office to see if scholarship funds are available. Other highlights of 4 H Exploration Days 2011 include: 4-H s Got Talent! Dance Swimming Planetarium Show Museum Ice Skating Campus Facility Tours Living at MSU 4 H Awards Celebration Entertainment 4-H s Got Talent! 4-H talent will be in the spotlight for the 4-H Exploration Days entertainment at Wharton Center on Wednesday, June 22, from 8 to 9:15 p.m. Performing groups and individuals 4-H ers, alumni staff or volunteers will be selected through county nominations and CD, DVD, video or web auditions (song, dance, skits, etc.) Download the 4 H s Got Talent Application at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/4h/ expodays for more details. Don t wait Registration begins March 22, 2011. The deadline for returning your registration form to your county MSU Extension office can vary from county to county (typically the end of April), but don t wait some sessions fill quickly on a first-come, first-served basis. HAPPENINGS 6 OTTAWA COUNTY 4-H Spring Achievements - 2011 All projects that are pre-registered are eligible. Still exhibits are for any class offered at the fairs except those with animals. There MUST be a corresponding class at the fairs for each project entered. Monday, April 18, 2011 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Drop off for all still exhibit projects 5:30 p.m Style Judging for all members modeling outfits All Still exhibit judging 6:45 pm: All Construction judging Tuesday, April 19, 2011: 6:00 p.m. Doors Open 7:00 pm Fashion show followed by awards All exhibits must have an exhibit card firmly attached. Exhibit tags are color coded by year in the project and will be sent to all leaders who have pre-registered projects. Still exhibit items may be dropped off on Monday from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. and left in the building overnight. Judging of garment construction takes place in the small conference rooms Monday night after style judging. All garments are left in the building overnight. Models may start getting ready for the style show on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Fillmore Complex Main Conference Room 12220 Fillmore St West Olive, MI 49460 Enter via the west door and take the elevator to the upper level. This special showmanship contest is only open to 4-H members who placed 1 st overall in their local county rabbit senior showmanship contest. Preregistration is required for this contest only by January 7 th. All other classes at the State 4-H Rabbit show are same day registration. Consider attending 4-H Capitol Experience, March 20 to 23 where you will work with other teens and have an opportunity to interact with government officials in Lansing. Participants will: *Discover how to be actively involved in influencing policy decisions *Understand the responsibilities of a citizen *Explore different aspects of a policy issue that may affect individuals and communities *Explore various careers in public policy *Learn about the policy process at the state level *Bill writing session *Network with teens from around the state Cost is $295. All 4-H members are invited to submit art work and ideas for the cover. The book is 4 ¼ inches wide and 11 inches tall. The art work must be in black and white, (no color) must include the words Ottawa County 4-H Horse Program as well as an official 4-H clover. Due date is February 1, 2011. All art submitted must be in good taste and acceptable for family viewing. You may submit the art work as original art on white paper, or as a pdf file electronically. Include your name, age, and address on the back of the art work or if a pdf file is submitted, in the body of the e-mail test. The subject line should be horse brochure art. HAPPENINGS 8 Kettunen Center Workshops Fee Policy The Ottawa County 4-H Council has a scholarship/fee payment policy for Kettunen Center workshops. Members will pay a $15 co-pay for their first workshop and full price thereafter. Leaders will pay a $10 co-pay for any workshop they wish to attend when serving as a chaperone. Members are encouraged to seek out sponsorship for their co-pays from committees or local businesses. See the latest schedule below for a fine line up of Ket workshops for the coming year. Troy Potter is looking forward to working with Hilltop Gang and he is also interested in shooting sports. Joy Shannon will also be working with B & B 4-H club at the Rustic Star. Amy Stewart is starting a new 4-H club in Holland. Her main interest is horses but she will also include other projects. Sam Tatrow will be working with the Little Wishes Big Dreams 4-H club in the Marne area. We also welcome back Jennifer Mendham who has come back to being a 4-H leader here in Ottawa County and will be working with Kountry Cattle 4-H Club. Hippology Openings The Ottawa County 4-H Hippology team has openings for two or three members. If you are interested in learning more about horses, are serious about the science and management of horses and you are willing to put in the time to go to team practice sessions, please consider joining. You must be available to compete with the team on April 16th at the MSU Jamboree and you must be able to commit to attending most practice sessions which are held at the Fillmore Complex each Tuesday starting at 6:30 p.m. during January, February, March and early April. It will be a January calf for Berlin or a March calf for Holland. I understand that it must be tagged by a representative of the 4-H Market Livestock Committee. It will be brought to a weigh-in in the spring. Feeder calves may not weigh more than 325 at spring weigh in for Berlin Fair. The member who will show the calf will be present for both the tagging and the weigh-in. Two calves may be tagged and weighed but only one shown at the fair. I have read and agree to abide by the Market Livestock Project Guidelines and the Ottawa County 4-H Code of Conduct and I understand the 4-H participation fee of $10 per member must be paid before weigh-in.
