The Roald Dahl Festival takes place in Aylesbury on Saturday 3rd July and is a very special day of family activities and entertainment which celebrates the work of the world renowned author. This year s event is themed on the very popular story Fantastic Mr Fox and will be a fun-filled day packed with creative activities, live music, theatre, dance and shows. The spectacular Roald Dahl Parade kicks off in Aylesbury Town Centre at 11am and will feature a multitude of characters and themes from Fantastic Mr Fox as giant puppets, as well as music and other original artwork created by young people from across the Vale. After the parade there will be plenty to see and do, details of which can be found in the following pages. 11am - Market Square and Kingsbury see route map on reverse Roald Dahl Parade The streets of Aylesbury will be brought to life with a colourful parade of artwork, carnival, music, dance and costumes. During the weeks leading up to the festival children from primary schools, young people from secondary schools and community groups will work with artists to create characters from the popular Roald Dahl story - Fantastic Mr Fox. Larger than life puppets will parade through the streets of Aylesbury. Entering at the top of the Market Square, the parade will wind its way around the square and then out through Kingsbury by Pebble Lane, finishing at St Mary s Church. The parade will feature all the favourite characters from the story including Farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean, all the animals, and of course, Mr Fox himself! There will be music and street theatre in the parade including some of the top Samba Bands in the region.
11am to 3pm - Market Square See the Parade and the Market The Market Square will be a prime point to see the Roald Dahl Parade from, as it snakes around the square before exiting into Kingsbury. The regular market will be extended on this day and there will be the opportunity to buy fresh produce and locally produced items. And don t forget to look out for farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean selling their wares. Following their participation in the Roald Dahl Parade, African Junction will be performing in the Market Square. African Junction is an eight piece band performing traditional West African rhythms, playing authentic drums and other instruments, with dance and song.
Kingsbury Activities Kingsbury will be a thriving area of music, street theatre and children s craft activity led by the AVDC Play Services together with the Queens Park Arts Centre. An information stand will also be available to help you to make the most of your day. 11.30am to 3pm - Kingsbury AVDC Play Services Craft Activities Aylesbury Vale District Council s Play Services will offer children the opportunity to make a variety of Fantastic Mr Fox themed craft activities free of charge. 11.30am to 3pm - Kingsbury Queens Park Arts Centre Come and join in our exciting art and craft activities for children throughout the day. Create colourful animal footprint trails, build your own digger and burrow into the soil to find hidden creatures, and lots more. 12noon to 2pm - Kingsbury Live Music Join the crowds in Kingsbury as bands and street performers from the parade keep you entertained. Performances will include: Sol Samba Formed in the summer of 1999, Sol Samba is a community samba band based in Oxford, whose local performances include the Cowley Road Carnival and Summertown Arts Festival. Sol Samba s exciting repertoire includes original and traditional pieces based on Samba Reggae, Maracatu, Afro-Samba, Samba Duro, Batucada and Baião. Each year, Sol Samba dancers lead the parade with costumes especially designed to represent the parade theme. Sambuka Sambuka are a community based percussion band from Hemel Hempstead who have been exciting audiences and recruiting converts to the delights of afro-brazilian rhythms for more than a decade. Major performances have included Notting Hill Carnival and London's Thames Festival. Sambuka are led by Bob Garland, who has studied and performed in Brazil several times, including with top samba schools in the Rio Carnival and in Salvador, Bahia. African Junction Africa Junction is a band based around High Wycombe who perform traditional West African rhythms, playing drums (dun-dun and djembe) and other instruments, with dance and song. Many band members have played over a number of years with different groups such as Vitae, Drumweaver, Crooked Sixpence, Vitae Drummers, Secret Bass, Jambo Sana and Vibrazioni di Pace.
11am to 3pm - Aylesbury Library, Walton Street Aylesbury Library Fun Day (Bounce & Rhyme 10am) Start the celebrations early at Aylesbury Library with a special Bounce and Rhyme for the under 5s. This will be followed by an exciting programme of activities for the whole family. You can join The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre from Great Missenden for their lively story sessions, take part in the craft activities, have your face painted, browse through the book and audio visual sale and discover more about this year s out of this world Summer Reading Challenge Space Hop. Also visit our Mobile Library in Kingsbury. 11am to 3pm - St Mary s Church, Church Street St. Mary s Church Activity Day Whether you want to relax with a cup of coffee and delicious homemade cake, enjoy an afternoon of nonstop entertainment provided by St Mary s Singers and the Doorways Dance Group, make the climb to the bell tower or take part in a variety of craft activities including the ever- popular flower arranging, there will be something for all the family at St. Mary s.
11am to 3pm - Aylesbury Library, Walton Street The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre invites you to join in Swashboggling Storytelling and Crafts Come along to Aylesbury Library and meet the Museum s squiffling storytellers who will be sharing some noisy Revolting Rhymes for all the family. Get stuck into some crodsquinkling craft activities and swizzfiggle your brain with Dahl-themed quizzes and wordsearches. Storytelling sessions at approximately 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm
11am to 4pm - Buckinghamshire County Museum and Roald Dahl Children's Gallery, Church Street Buckinghamshire County Museum Roald Dahl Festival Fun Day A whizzpopping day of FREE activities at the Museum: Meet characters from Fantastic Mr Fox, find out fantastic facts about the book s creatures, make an animal mask and other craft activities to take home. Hear the fantastical story of Mr Fox and his companions or sit back and listen to our Jazz band in the garden café. Lots to enjoy for the whole family. Special Fun Day offer: Reduced price ticket for the Roald Dahl Children's Gallery and to explore Mr Fox's tunnel: 2 for 30 minutes.
