INFORMATION/ RULES & REGULATIONS The Grand Oaks Classic is recognized by the American Driving Society and every class offered herein which is covered by the current rules and specifications of the Society will be conducted and judged in accordance therewith. We recommend that all competitors familiarize themselves with the 2017 Prize list as well as with the current A.D.S. Rule Book. A COMPETITORS AND PUBLIC 1. LIABILITY The American Driving Society, Grand Oaks Resort Operating, LLC, Grand Oaks Classic, Officials and Staff will not be response ble for any claim resulting from injury or injuries to any person, equine, or loss or damage to property incurred on the show grounds. All persons riding on any vehicle MUST sign both an A.D.S. waiver as well as a Grand Oaks Resort waiver and be on file with the Show secretary. Competitors in violation are subject to disqualification from the show. 2. DOGS ON A LEASH Any dog that is not restrained by a leash will be confined by the Show Officials and a $50.00 retrieval fee will be assessed. A stoop and scoop law for dog owners is in effect on the grounds. B ENTRY PROCEDURES 3. ENTRY FEES The entry fee is $100.00 per division (Turnout, Reinsmanship, Working, Ring Obstacle and Cross Country); Exception: $75.00 per division for Junior & Non-Traditional; $25.00 per individual classes. Pre-Entries close Saturday, February 1, 2017. COMPETITORS MUST COMPETE IN ALL CLASSES FOR A DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP. All checks and payments are to be made payable to: Grand Oaks Resort. 7
4. ADS MEMBERSHIP Every driver must be a member in good standing of the American Driving Society. Membership proof must accompany each entry before a competitor number will be issued. A Non-member ADS fee of $30.00 will be charged to all competitors who are not members of the ADS. A $5.00 ADS Competition fee is also charged for each individual member. 5. POST ENTRIES Schedule will not be changed after February 6, 2017 for split entries, post entries will be accepted up to the day before any class, provided the class has not been closed by the Committee. The Post Entry Fee is $40.00 per class. 6. ENTRY DECLINED The Committee reserves the right to decline any entry, and to return any entry fee before or during the Competition, without being liable for com pensation. 7. FORFEIT OF FEES In the case of horses/ponies being entered and not exhibited, entry fees will be forfeited. Refunds on entries* will be made only on receipt of a Veterinary or Medical Certificate attesting to the inability of the animal or person to participate due to illness or injury. This Certificate must be received prior to the beginning of the show, February 10, 2017. (*stalls fees are not refundable) 8. COMPETITOR NUMBERS An entry (turnout) is defined as a combination of horse(s), vehicle and driver and must be assigned a specific entry number. In the event that a vehicle is disabled, management may authorize the substitution of another vehicle without issuing a new number. Vehicle changes must be reported to the Show Secretary. All entries must have an entry number before entering any class. Competitor numbers may be obtained at the Secretary s Office after all fees have been paid. It is the driver s responsibility to display the proper number for the turnout entering the ring or obstacle course. AN AWARD MAY BE WITH- HELD FROM ANY COMPETITOR PARTICIPATING IN ANY CLASS DISPLAYING THE INCORRECT NUMBER FOR THAT TURNOUT. 9. SPLIT CLASSES The Judge(s) and/or Committee reserve the right to split any class, in the Interest of Safety, should the number of entries warrant such action. 8
10. MINIMUM ENTRIES In the event that only four or fewer entries for horses/ponies are received for any of the listed classes, the Committee reserves the right to combine or cancel said classes. 11. DUPLICATE ENTRIES No driver, horse(s), pony(s) groom or passenger may appear more than once in any one obstacle class, or more than once around the same cross-country-course. 12. VEHICLE WIDTH Measurements for the obstacle courses will be taken at the tread width, as cones with balls on top will be used. The tread width of each vehicle should be taken at the ground on the widest part of wheels. If the single tree or splinter bar proves to be too wide for this arrangement, the cones may be adjusted accordingly. This is the decision of the Technical Delegate, and must be done during the initial measurement. Please make sure all vehicles have numbers displayed to identify carriages for wheel measurements. 13. JUNIOR DRIVER Junior and adult drivers are defined as follows: a) The competition age of an individual will be the age reached during the current calendar year. b) Junior A - competition age: 10 and below. Junior A drivers may not compete in any classes held outside a securely enclosed Arena and must be accompanied by a knowledgeable adult horseman at all times. c) Junior B - competition age 11, 12, 13. Junior B drivers must be accompanied by a knowledgeable adult horseman at all times. EXCEPTION: Junior B drivers competing with a single Very Small Equine turnout in a securely enclosed arena need not be accompanied by a knowledgeable adult horseman unless required by the organizer. d) Junior C - competition age 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. Junior C drivers competing with a single horse/pony turnout at their discretion need not carry a groom/passenger unless required by the competition. e) Adult - Competition age 19 and over. Juniors are prohibited from exhibiting stallions. Must wear properly Fastened protective headgear which meets ASTM/SEI standards. Failure to comply will result in elimination. 9
C GENERAL 14. BREED & SIZE The pleasure driving horse may be of any breed, color or size. An ani mal measuring over 14.2 hands will be classified as a horse. An animal measuring 14.2 hands and under will be classified as a pony. A regis tered horse of a breed permitting horses to be under 14.2 hands, (i.e. Arabian, Morgan, Quarter Horse, etc.) may show as a horse, but not as a horse and pony at this-event. 15. VSE CLASSIFICATION Open to any horse measuring no more than 39 in. or 99 cm. 16. METHOD OF DRIVING The method or style of driving is optional. 17. PLEASURE DRIVING HARNESS AND VEHICLE All entries must be shown in pleasure driving harness and put to a Pleasure Driving Vehicle. FEI/Combined Driving PRESENTATION VE HICLES ARE ALLOWED. MARATHON VEHICLES ARE ONLY AL LOWED IN THE NON-TRADITIONAL DIVISION. Pneumatic and wire wheeled vehicles are prohibited from all Divisions EXCEPT NON- TRADITIONAL. The only exceptions are those antique vehicles with long wire spokes and hard rubber tires. 18. ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT Flash nosebands, drop nosebands, figure-eight nosebands, or any bri dle part or attachment which extend below the appropriate bit are pro hibited. Bell boots, shin boots and wraps may be used on Cross Country Course only. In the case of inclement weather, the Technical Delegate may allow bell boots to be used in the ring. 19. SHOEING If shod, horses should be suitably shod for Pleasure Driving. Borium or similar shoeing procedures are recommended for hard-surface roads. 20. DRIVER ELIGIBILITY & RESPONSIBILITY The driver may be either an amateur or professional. No change of driver is permitted during any class. The only person to handle the reins, whip and brake is the driver, under penalty of elimination for an infringement. Exceptions: Groom down on any part of the Cross Country Course will incur faults; groom down in any obstacle class will incur elimination. 21. OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE Outside assistance is forbidden under penalty of elimination. Excep ion: In certain instances, outside assistance to a party may be allowed 10
by the judge(s): i.e., holding a turnout while a participant is engaged in giving aid during an emergency. 22. EXAMINING THE COURSE THERE SHALL BE NO SCHOOLING OR WALKING A HORSE, UNDER PENALTY OF ELIMINATION, OVER ANY OF THE OBSTACLE COURSES. While walking the obstacles courses, competitors shall not alter, adjust or in any way move an obstacle. Should a competitor have any question regarding a specific obstacle, he/she should call it to the attention of the Course Designer or Technical Delegate for clarification and/or adjustment. 23. ORDER OF GO & PREPAREDNESS The order of go for the obstacle classes will be posted prior to each class. The driver must be prepared to enter the ring or obstacle area when his/her class is called. The management may announce that a one (1) minute time limit will be invoked. Management may give permis sion for the class to be held for an entry which requires an equipment change provided the show secretary has been notified in advance. 24. CANTERING/GALLOPING- BREAK IN GAIT No cantering or galloping will be allowed in any class. A break to a canter is defined as three full strides if an advantage has been gained; six full strides if no advantage has been gained. In the case of a multi ple turnout, all horses must break for a penalty to be incurred. 25. PAIR HORSE/PONY DIVISIONS All entries in these divisions must be driven to a four-wheeled vehicle, with the exception of a Curricle or Cape Cart with the appropriate har ness. D SAFETY 26. CONDITION OF HARNESS AND VEHICLE It is the competitor s responsibility to be certain that all harness is in good repair, and that the vehicle is in sound condition. No competitor will be allowed to continue in a class when, in the opinion of the Judge, any part of the turnout has become dangerous or unsafe. 27. BRIDLES Under no circumstance or condition should a bridle be removed from a horse/ pony while it is still put to a vehicle. Bridles should fit snugly to prevent catching on a vehicle or other pieces of harness 28. BREAKDOWN In the event of a breakdown in the obstacle classes, either to harness or vehicle, which necessitates a halt for repair, the competitor is to make only those adjustments/repairs necessary for the safe removal of their 11
turnout from the obstacle course. 29. LEAVING THE ARENA No entry may leave the arena after judging has begun without permis sion from the Judge and/or ringmaster, however, in the event of an ac cident and/or equipment failure which requires either medical attention or repair, the turnout must leave the arena or obstacle course as soon as possible. 30. ACCIDENT In the case of an accident, the Technical Delegate or Show Committee may, at his/her discretion, require a safety inspection of the vehicle in volved in the accident by members of the Show Committee, before al lowing the vehicle to be used in any succeeding classes. 31. GROOMS AND ATTENDANTS Each turnout must comply with their entry type as specified below: Unicorn / Four-in-Hand - a driver, two grooms VSE Unicorn / Four-in-Hand a driver, one groom Tandem - a driver, one groom or one passenger Pair - a driver, one groom or one passenger Grooms or passengers are not allowed to leave their respective positions on the vehicle while it is in motion or attempt to correct a problem without being put down. EXCEPTIONS: grooms dismounting to head the horses immediately prior to a halt and shifting weight to aid balance to prevent an accident are permissible. Failure to comply will incur elimination. Minor adjustments to harness may be made upon permission from the Judge. A groom/ passenger riding on the vehicle may be put down to assist with the adjustment without penalty except in obstacle classes. After judging begins, no attendant may enter the arena without the permission of the Judge except in the case of an accident or to prevent an accident. Leading a turnout into the ring or obstacle course start is considered outside assistance and is not permitted. Grooms may not stand behind the driver. If the vehicle does not permit the groom to sit behind the driver, permission must be obtained to allow the groom to sit beside the driver. When a groom or passenger is put down to head the horse(s) during a line-up, he or she must remount when the driver moves off. This includes individual tests. Failure to comply will be penalized. If it becomes necessary for a groom(s) or passenger(s) to assist the driver, penalties will be assessed, as indicated in the class specifications. The groom or attendant must be capable of rendering assistance in case of difficulty. A groom is optional with a single horse/pony turnout. The style of vehicle may determine this. 12
E CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES 32. CLOTHING In all classes the driver shall wear a hat, an apron or knee rug, and gloves. Drivers should dress appropriately when competing in any pleasure driving class, including obstacles. Any attempt to introduce period costumes or gaudy trapping is discouraged. Dress for driver, passengers, and attendants should conform to the type of turnout, i.e. Formal, Park, Country, or Sporting. Gentlemen must wear a coat or jacket while appearing in any class unless excused from doing so by the Judge. Gentlemen are requested to remove their hats when accepting awards. Ladies must wear a con servative outfit. Floppy hats are discouraged. Grooms of either sex may wear stable livery except in the most formal vehicles where full livery would be appropriate. 33. WHIPS An appropriate whip shall be carried in hand at all times while driving. The thong on the whip should be long enough to reach the shoulder of the farthest horse. A driver not in compliance with the above shall be penalized. A whip with its thong tied in a manner which renders it in capable of reaching the horse is not allowed. Failure to comply must be severely penalized. FAILURE TO CARRY A WHIP IN AN OBSTA CLE CLASS INCURS ELIMINATION. F AWARDS 34. AWARDS A commemorative award to the winner and ribbons to sixth place will be awarded in each class. 35. CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS Championships are based on the total number of points accumulated in Each division. Points will be awarded from first to sixth placing inclu sive. **See Championship Awards for changes in scoring when there are fewer than six entries in a class. A trophy will be awarded for each Championship. 36. TIES Ties for first place must be worked off. The work-off will take place immediately preceding the presentation of the ribbons or prior to the Championship. Ties for lower placing may be decided by a coin-flip upon agreement of all tied parties. Exception: if two entries under same ownership are tied, the owner may designate the order of the finish. Ties of championship placing will be broken by the competitors placing in the Reinsmanship Class. 13
37. APPEARANCE AT PRESENTATION The committee requires that all competitors receiving a Championship Award must appear with their turnout. G HEALTH REQUIREMENTS 38. NEGATIVE COGGINS A copy of a Negative Coggins Certificate must accompany each entry stating that each animal was submitted to a test for equine infectious anemia during the last year. 39. ENTRY INTO THE STATE OF FLORIDA The State of Florida requires all horses entering Florida, must present a Health Certificate both entering and exiting the state at the Agricultural Stations on Interstates 95 and 75 as well as all Highways. H PROTEST 40. JUDGE S DECISION A Judge s decision, representing his/her individual preference are not protest able. Objections must be made to the Technical Delegate no more than one hour after the posting of class results. 41. QUESTIONS OR DISPUTES Any question or dispute not provided for in these Rules and Regulations will be referred to the Technical Delegate for his/her ruling and/or deci sion. Should a competitor wish to protest the Technical Delegate deci sion and/or ruling, he/she may do so at the time such decision is ren dered by filing a formal protest with the Competition Committee. I STALLS & CARRIAGE STORAGE 42. EXPO STABLING WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING THE SHOW. We will provide expo stall stabling on the grounds for all our Competi tors. The stabling fee, including 1 bag of initial shavings, is $125.00. Reservations must be made for all stalls. (See entry form) Stalls re served after February 1, 2017 will be at the cost of $175.00. There are no guaranties that stalls will be available if reserved or paid for after February 1, 2017. Stalls will be available Wednesday, February 8, beginning at 10:00 AM. Please indicate the number of stalls needed on the Entry Form and the amount of payment. NO STRAW IS ALLOWED, ONLY SHAVINGS. Additional shavings & hay will be available for purchase from the Stable Managers each day. One bag of shavings for each stall will be provided. A limited amount of 14
complimentary carriage storage space may be available, but not guaranteed. Security: The Committee will not accept responsibility for items lost or damaged on the grounds. Please provide the Show Secretary with your hotel name or a cell phone number to assist with the security and safety program. Competitors exhibiting stallions are responsible for providing any additional screening or wall board, etc. All stalls must be vacated on Monday, February 13, 2017 unless other arrangements are made. 43. DAY ENTRIES Participants not needing stalls and trailering in daily must check in with the Show Office upon arrival. Make sure to use 3141 Griffin Ave., Lady Lake, FL 32159 entrance. A Day parking charge of $20 per horse will be charged. The day parking area will be designated. Please see Stable Manager. J ACCOMMODATIONS & CAMPSITES 44. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 1) Turnout (Ring Class) 1. A Pleasure Driving class in which entries are judged primarily on the performance and quality of each turnout. 2. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot, and strong trot. To stand quietly and to rein back. 3. To be judged: 70% on the condition, fit and appropriateness of harness and vehicle, neatness and appropriateness of attire and overall impression. 30% on performance, manners and way of going. 2) Working (Ring Class) 1. A Pleasure Driving class in which entries are judged primarily on the suitability of the horse to provide a pleasant drive. 2. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. To stand quietly, both on the rail and while lined up, and to rein back. 3. All entries chosen for a workout may be worked both ways of the arena at any gait requested by the judge and may be asked to exe cute appropriate tests. 4. To be judged: 70% on performance, manners and way of going of the horse(s). 20% on the condition and fit of harness and vehicle. 10% on neatness of attire. 3) Reinsmanship (Ring Class) 1. A Pleasure Driving class in which entries are judged primarily on the ability and skill of the driver. 2. To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. Drivers shall be required to rein back. 3. All drivers chosen for a workout may be worked at any gait request ed by the judge and may be asked to execute appropriate tests. 4. The driver should be seated comfortably on the box so as to be relaxed and effective. 5. Either the one or two-handed method of driving is acceptable. Com mon to both methods, the elbows and arms should be close to the body with an allowing but steady hand enabling a consistent "feel" with the horse's mouth. Drivers should not be penalized or rewarded for using one general style over another. 6. To be judged: 75% on handling of reins and whip, control, posture, and overall im pression of driver. 25% on the condition of harness and vehicle and neatness of attire. 16
4) Cross Country 1. To be driven over a prescribed course of natural and/or artificial obstacles designed to simulate those that might be encountered on a country drive (i.e. bridges, water, log pile, farm animal pens, etc.) Obstacles should be designed to be easily driven and are not to simu late Combined Driving Obstacles. Obstacles must be clearly numbered. 2. The suggested length of course is approximately 1 kilometer or.6 miles. Should the course design not allow judges to be able to see the entire course while judging, organizers may position spotters to observe and record course violations to be submitted to an event offi cial for final scoring and spotters will also serve as observers for safe ty during this class. Spotters should be able to communicate with an event official during the class. 3. After passing through the Start markers, the driver shall proceed through each obstacle, in order, keeping within the limits of the desig nated course markers and passing through the designated Finish markers. a) Placings will be determined on a low fault basis (ie. those with few er faults finish ahead of those with more faults). b) Course faults and one fault for each commenced second over the Time Allowed are added together for a total score. c) The Time Allowed is to be calculated as per Article 240. d) Time will decide ties for those with equal fault totals. 4. No salute is required before competing in any Obstacle Driving Class. The number of obstacles to be proportionate to the dimensions of the driving area. Not to exceed 20 obstacles. 2. After passing the starting line, the driver shall proceed through each Obstacle in order to the designated finish line. 3. Course faults are assessed as penalty seconds and are added to the driver s elapsed time. Placings are determined on a low total time basis. 18

Elimination j) Off course...elimination 7) Fault and Out 1. A timed course of numbered obstacles to be driven at the trot. The number of obstacles to be proportionate to the dimensions of the driving area and not to exceed 10 obstacles. 2. After passing through the Start markers, the driver shall proceed through each consecutively numbered obstacle, in order, until the allowed time expires (suggested time, 90 seconds to two minutes), or until an obstacle is dislodged or a disobedience occurs. 3. If all the obstacles are driven cleanly before the allowed time ex pires, the driver will begin the course again, starting with obstacle #1, without having to pass through the Start markers. 4. Two points will be scored for each obstacle cleared before the al lowed time expires, a disobedience occurs or an obstacle is dis lodged. 5. When the allowed time expires, a disobedience occurs or an obsta cle is dis lodged, a signal will be given. The driver shall then proceed through the next consecutively numbered obstacle. The time will be taken when the rear axle clears this obstacle. If that obstacle is cleared, one point is scored. If it is dislodged, no points for that dis lodged obstacle are scored, but the time is still taken. 6. For the purposes of scoring, a disobedience (refer to Article 211, Break in Gaits) is considered a dislodgement of the attempted obsta cle. 7. Going off course or dislodging a Start marker will incur elimination. Passing through the Start markers more than one time is not consid ered off course. 19
8) Progressive 8. The score of a driver who fails to drive the next consecutively num bered ob stacle after the whistle is blown shall count, up to the point where the signal is given, but the competitor must be placed after those with an equal score and time. 9. Placings will be determined by the greatest number of points. 1. To be driven at the trot over a course of six numbered obstacles which will be adjusted to the following clearances: #1-20, #2-16, #3-12, #4-8, #5-4, #6-2" or # 1-51cm, #2-41cm, #3-30cm, #4-20cm, #5-10cm, #6-5cm. 2. After passing the starting line, the entry shall proceed through each obstacle, in order, until finishing the course or dislodging an obstacle. 3. Scoring a) Time to be recorded when the rear axle clears the last obstacle. Points accumulated to that point count. b) Time to be recorded when an obstacle is dislodged. Points accu mulated to that point count. c) For a disobedience or for going off course, points accumulated to that point count; however, no time will be recorded. d) Two points given for each set of cones cleared. No points given for dislodged obstacle. e) Placings determined on a high point basis. f) Entries with accumulated points and no recorded time are placed after those with equal points and recorded times. 4. Penalties a) Dislodging an obstacle... Accumulated points and time recorded to that point b) Break in gait (to canter or walk).. Accumulated points and time rec orded to that point c) Disobedience...Accumulated points count, no time recorded d) Off course....accumulated points count, no time recorded e) Groom(s) dismounting.... Accumulated points count, no time recorded 9) Drive And Ride Single horse to be shown in two concurrent sections: 1. In Harness: To be shown to a suitable pleasure driving vehicle, both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot, and strong trot. or stand quietly and to rein back. 2. Under Saddle: To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, trot, and canter. To stand quietly and to rein back. 20

To be judged: 50% on performance, manners, way of going and suitability in har ness. 50% on performance, manners, and way of going under saddle. 10) Picnic Class The entries in this class are judged primarily on performance and quality of turn out, dress of passengers and presentation of the picnic itself. Competitors will be asked to briefly work their turnout in the arena. Once the horse is un hitched from the carriage, the horse can be taken back to the stable area. All picnic participants and their amenities must be part of the turnout during the arena portion of the class. They will be dismissed to travel to the assigned picnic location. This class is open to Single Horse/Pony entries. To be judged: 20% on performance, manner and way of going 20% on condition, fit and appropriateness of harness and vehicle 60% on overall impression including presentation of the picnic (the food itself will not be a factor) 11) Carriage Dog 1. Judged primarily on suitability of the dog to serve as a companion (maximum one dog per vehicle.) To be judged both ways in the arena at a walk, slow trot and working trot. a) The dog should be standing, lying down or seated on the vehicle or should run behind, beside or at the axle of the vehicle. b) The dog must be under control at all times. c) The dog must not be led on the ground from the vehicle or be restrained by being tied to the vehicle, driver or passenger. d) The driver should not hold the dog, and the dog should not interfere with the driver in any way. 2. The dog may be of any breed. 3. To be judged: 60% on the suitability of the dog to serve as a companion. 30% on the performance, manners and way of going of the horse(s) 10% on the overall impression of the turnout, including the dog. Entries with a dog clearly not under control may be eliminated. 21
Concours D Elegance The essence of the competition is the word Elegance. The winner will be the turnout which, in the opinion of the judge, presents the most elegant effect. This will include vehicle, harness, appointments, horse(s), driver, passengers, grooms, etc., but above all, general impression is most important. Vehicle and harness may be inspected to ensure thoughtful restoration and careful maintenance. Attention will be paid to the personal appearance of the driver, grooms, and passengers as it contributes to the overall picture. Period costumes are definitely prohibited. Performance will not be judged unless it detracts from the elegance of the turnout. To be judged by overall impression throughout the competition. 22
