MEET OUR NEW PRESIDENT Throughout his career, Shawn has consistently driven innovation and change-management to move organizations forward with resulting business growth. SKF Canada has only had 7 presidents in its 99 year history and now we welcome our number 8 Shawn Gibson. Shawn knows SKF well and most recently managed the Magnetic Bearing business located in Calgary, AB. This high-tech operation has been successful in innovating and developing products that help customers achieve oil-free operations in their rotating equipment. In this role, Shawn was responsible for sales and business development, engineering, manufacturing, field service and of course bottom line results. Learn more about Shawn Gibson 1. What was the last book you read? The First 90 Days. I think it took 90 days to read because the first 90 are busy times. I like leadership reads that give insight to how people really perform and connect with each other. 2. What is your favourite sports team? I would rather be playing sports than watching my favorite team. I like major sporting events and especially when an underdog like the Calgary Flames can pull off a winning streak. 3. What is your favourite TV show? I just finished watching Narcos on Netflix. Amazing story, brutal human behavior and lots of bad decisions...what s not to like? 4. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would go to? I like adventure. Our family is heading to Nicaragua in the spring and I m really looking forward to that. 5. What is your favourite charity? I think it s important to support research for cancer cures and neurological diseases. These charities also have great cycling events that are a bonus for team building 6. What hobbies are you interested in? Projects - of any kind. Home automation, building stuff. 7. What is your favourite food? Is coffee a food? Peanut butter is good too! 8. Name something about you that may surprise other people? I enjoy painting with my 11 year old daughter. I like oils she likes acrylics. 9. Favourite quote? Never doubt that a small group of dedicated people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead 4 The new president of SKF Canada Shawn Gibson (center) discusses new products with Marketing Manager Lars Ruuth (left) and Tom Karch (right) Vice-President - Sales Development. SKF Canada is a great organization with a very strong team says Shawn. I know Canada is facing some diverse challenges in our economy. I am confident we can help our customers get ahead and deliver excellent business growth. There are so many innovative offers and service solutions from SKF right now, enabling us to deliver better value to our customers and distributor partners. This together with our team is a great foundation for growth. I am very excited about our path forward, building an incredibly strong SKF Canada. Shawn will remain based in Calgary and will travel frequently to SKF offices and customer locations throughout Canada. If you want to contact Shawn, you can send him an e-mail at: shawn.gibson@skf.com 10. What was the best advice you ever received? A good friend told me, approach difficult conversations with a sense of curiosity and decide how you want to show up. I find it goes a long way to achieving what you want without all the conflict. WHAT S NEXT FOR SKF CANADA One of the main reasons why organizations are not successful is that management does not prioritize enough. Some call it lack of focus. SKF has identified five priorities for its immediate future: Capture the customer At SKF we need to identify potential customers and focus on delivering what they truly need. By having a natural inroad to the customer, together with our Distributor partners, we can build and introduce the full SKF offering over time. There is a lot of market potential available for us to capture. Application-driven innovation In a slower-growing market, the customer asks for innovations and solutions that make his/her product more competitive. We must have a thorough understanding of the customer application and its value chain, and based on this develop things that matter. This applies both to OEM and aftermarket (with our Distributor partners). World-class manufacturing Having the right products is not enough. If our manufacturing is not competitive and doesn t produce the right quality at the lowest possible cost, we will not succeed. SKF is known for having some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry and we will introduce a few of them to you. I encourage you to reach out to Doug and draw on his experience! Cost competitiveness Cost competitiveness isn t something achieved by reorganization or downsizing. It requires hard continuous work and a lot of attention to detail. And it cuts across the full organization, at all levels and in all areas. It requires a focus on the important few things necessary for reaching the goal. Maximize cash flow over time To succeed as a company, we need to generate as much cash as possible over time. We need this to reinvest in our business, to innovate and expand, to pay taxes and to deliver value to our stakeholders. SKF Insight, groundbreaking intelligent smart bearing technology SKF SPOTLIGHT Name: Doug Brintnell Position: Food & Beverage Segment Business Manager (also for Maintenance products) Background: I started off in 1978 as a machine operator for SKF and have held a variety of positions over the last 30 years. Doug Britnell, Food and beverage manager, 2016. (right) Doug holds up purchase order for first vibration analysis contract, 1985. (below) Trends: The food and beverage industry is commonly one of the largest manufacturing sectors in an economy. Increased pressure to reduce cycle times are pushing machinery close to its limits, whether it is hot, cold or wash-down environments. SKF s solutions help to increase reliability and boost productivity. Tips: The key to success is to understand and align with customer goals. Stretch the proverbial box of thinking. Embrace and promote new technology and custom solutions to make a difference with the customer. Have passion in what you do. Contact: doug.brintnell@skf.com 5

SKF Powering young minds SKF is a huge supporter of empowerment and innovation. Each year we assist students from a variety of universities and colleges as they tackle new projects and initiatives. SKF supports engineering projects by providing both products as well as engineering knowledge. This gives students the opportunity to integrate high performance SKF parts as well as give them access to a wealth of SKF technical resources. This past year, we continued supporting the Blue Sky Solar Racing team from the University of Toronto. From October 18th to 25th, the Blue Sky team competed in the biennial World Solar Challenge in Australia, a 3000 km race from Darwin to Adelaide. Teams were challenged to create a vehicle that ran purely on solar power and can withstand the extreme conditions of the Australian Outback. Solar cars were allowed a nominal 5kW hours of stored energy. The rest of the energy to run the vehicle had to come from the sun or be recovered from the kinetic energy of the vehicle. Sandstorms, bushfires and strong headwinds were just some of the obstacle the team had to overcome while constructing their solar car. 29 teams from 17 countries around the world participated in this challenge. Blue Sky s vehicle, Horizon, finished the 3000 km journey in 47hrs 39mins and 39secs which placed them 12th overall! Not only is the World Solar Challenge an opportunity for solar car enthusiasts to gather, but it is also a showcase of the most energy efficient vehicles built. These vehicles shows us a glimpse of the future and allows us to examine the incredible capabilities of renewable energy. Blue Sky is already looking on improving their solar car as they hope to participate in the 2017 World Solar Challenge. We look forward in seeing what they can accomplish!
