Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links JGAOML Information Pack 2014

Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links 2014 Information Pack The Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links is a partnership between the Broughty Golf Club, Grange Golf Club, Monifieth Golf Club, local club professionals at Ron McLeod Pro Shop; and Monifieth Links. We are supported by ClubGolf Scotland. The aim of the Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links is to create a development pathway from entry level through to the highest levels of achievement. We wish to enable: increased access to golf; higher participation levels; improved standards of performance; sustained growth in the future; and enjoyment of golf. The ClubGolf programme was launched in 2003 to fulfil the Scottish Governmentʹs promise to provide every child in Scotland with an opportunity to experience golf, part of Scotlandʹs commitment to the game which formed part of the successful bid to host the 2014 Ryder Cup. Visit www.clubgolfscotland.com for more information. Should you wish to know more about JGAOML or play golf, please do not hesitate to contact any of us. Contact information is at the end of the leaflet. Andy McLaren, Chairman

Primary Schools The Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links in local Monifieth Primary Schools have a six week programme designed to give children aged nine a first introduction to golf. It is designed as a fun activity using colourful, modified golf equipment. ClubGolf in Primary Schools is delivered to P5 children in curriculum time by class teachers or suitably trained and disclosed volunteers. Please ask your Head Teacher for details. The schedule is agreed with Head Teachers at the start of each session. Young golfers will expect to learn some basic golfing concepts and terminology. They will receive a positive first experience of golf, and an opportunity to progress on to a ClubGolf Stage 1 programme at a local golf club or facility. Secondary Schools The Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links have recently been granted funding to offer local Monifieth High S1 and S2 pupils. Professional golf coaches Gordon McLeod and Lee Sutherland host an after school class on Tuesday afternoons from 4pm at the Monifieth Practice Ground. Please contact them at Ron McLeod Pro Shop, Monifieth (01382) 532945 for more detail.

The Pathway Junior Association of Monifieth Links (JGAOML) Stage 1 Summer (Thu 24 April 29 May,) and Autumn (Thu 14 Aug 25 Sep) Coaching sessions are conducted by Grange & Broughty PGA Level 1 coaches, Andy McLaren, Ron Macdonald and Graeme Campbell, supplemented by instruction from Monifieth Professionals Gordon and Lee. Junior members and children or grandchildren of Broughty, Grange and Monifieth Golf Club members are most welcome to attend. Places are limited and must be booked in advance. If you require any further information, please contact Andy, Ron, Graeme or Alex at the local Golf Clubs. Coaching sessions, for juniors aged 9 13 year olds are on Thursday evenings either side of the summer school holidays. The cost for each group of 6 week coaching sessions is free for members of JGAOML Golf Clubs and 10 for non members. Sessions are aimed at beginners and improvers. Times for each session are 6pm to 7.30pm and held on the Links putting greens, the practice ground and Ashludie Course. Sample program: Putting Meet at Grange Golf Club; Chipping and Pitching; Full Swing/ Bunker Play (Gordon and Lee to supervise); Chipping / Pitching Targets; Putting Competitions (Maybe also Instruction Videos); and Texas Scramble 7 holes on Ashludie. Juniors are advised to wear appropriate warm clothing and footwear (trainers are OK). In case of inclement weather, we will advise by email by 1pm on the day if the session is to be cancelled. Juniors ideally should have their own clubs, but we have a selection of clubs for those that initially have no access to clubs. We have a limited selection of left handed clubs. Only 3 Clubs are required for the first group sessions. A Driver or 3 Wood, a Putter and a Pitching club (9 iron or pitching wedge). For advice on purchasing Junior clubs please contact Andy, Ron, Graeme or The Pro Shop. All other equipment and balls will be provided.

JGAOML Stage 2 At this point in our program we would expect all participants to have taken out a Golf Club membership. Youngsters are welcome to join any of the JGAOML Golf Clubs Broughty, Grange or Monifieth. There is no advantage in joining any particular Club. We all offer associate membership free to other Junior Club members Stage 2 is coached by PGA Professionals Gordon McLeod & Lee Sutherland at the Monifieth Links Practice Ground. These take place during the Easter, Summer and Autumn School Holidays on a Tuesday morning, and on Saturday mornings once a month during term time. We have 2 hour long classes of 6 8 children in each class. The fundamentals of golf are taught during stage 2 include: Aim; Grip; Stance; Body alignment and Swing. At this point Children are encouraged to play regularly on the Ashludie course and hand in three cards for their handicap to allow them to start competing in Club Competitions. JGAOML Stage 3 Stage 3 is also coached by PGA Professionals Gordon McLeod & Lee Sutherland at the Monifieth Links Practice Ground. These take place during the Easter, Summer and Autumn School Holidays on a Tuesday morning and on an individual basis. We have an hour long classes of 6 8 children in each class. The fundamentals of golf are built on and new skills introduced include: Shaping Shots and Course Management. At this stage young golfers are encouraged to continue to play regularly on the Ashludie course and, if a suitable handicap has been achieved, the Medal Course. As well as Club Competitions it is also hoped that the young golfers would start to compete at local level in Opens and Angus County events with the better golfers going on to receive Angus County Funded Coaching on top of regular JGAOML Coaching.

Golfing Etiquette To ensure that you and others enjoy the game as much as possible you need good golfing etiquette and to understand the spirit of the game. Unlike many sports, golf is generally played without supervision of a referee. The game relies on the honesty of the player. Observe and respect the dress code Check in on time with the Starter before teeing off (10 minutes before tee time) Be polite to all club staff and committee Never throw clubs or damage the course in anger No litter Make sure no one is standing where you can hit them with your club or ball Do not play till players in front are out of range Keep up with the group in front or let the group behind play through Replace divots and repair pitch marks Dress Code All golfers are expected to dress appropriately for golf on Monifieth Links. Appropriate clothing is widely available such as golf caps, polo shirts, sweaters or sweatshirts, trousers or dress shorts. These and specialist shoes may be obtained at The Pro Shop. Football shirts, Tee shirts, beach shorts and jeans are not permitted. Volunteers Required The Junior Golf Association of Monifieth Links wishes to have more PGA Level 1 coaches trained. If you are interested, please contact us and arrangements for training may be arranged through Martin Ritchie, Regional Manager for ClubGolf.
