REEF BREEZES June 17 th 2016 Ph: 9971 8113 Fax: 9982 4648 Email: office@longreefgolfclub.com.au CAPTAIN S CORNER Men s Club Championships We changed the timing of our Championships this year as follows; Foursomes Qualifying - Sat 23 July. Match Play - 30 July, 13 Aug Final 20 Aug. Championships C Grade Qualifying 17 & 24 Sept. A, A Res, B Qualifying 1 & 8 Oct. Match Play 15, 22, 23 Oct Final 30 Oct. Did You Know When did the 14 th change from a par 5 to a par 4? Answer; This is a bit of a trick the current 12 th was the 14 th and changed to a par 4 in 1995 however the current 14 th was a par 5 for Women but changed to a par 4 in the early 90 s. When did Long Reef win the NSW Junior Pennant? Score Card Return - Condition Score cards must be scanned at the Kiosk in the Clubhouse within 10 minutes of the last group of the day finishing their round. Masters Pennant Round 4 saw Long Reef take on Muirfield at home. It was great to get back home after 3 away games that came with good wins. Expectations were high given the away record that we had to this point and the team didn t let anyone down. We came away with a 7 1/2 to nil win with some very good golf played by the whole team. In fact not one game went past the 16 th to indicate the strength of the win. I thought that might put a bit of distance between Bankstown and our team but Bankstown matched our result at Chatswood to leave themselves with a chance to win the division. We enter Round 5 with 4 game wins and 24.5 match wins versus Bankstown at 3 game wins and 21.5 matches. The crunch game comes this week against Bankstown when we host them. A win will secure the division and a loss will make the last round very tense. New Maintenance Facility The side walls have arrived and are being installed. Left Handers Cup Is on this Sat. 18 June, in conjunction with the normal competition. Left Handed Golfers need to register at the Pro Shop prior to hitting off to be eligible (there is no additional fee) The winner will be invited to play with the Captain and Rex Langthorne (NALGA President) on Saturday 2 July with the presentation afterwards. Golf NSW 4BB Championships. If you hit off on the 1 st it should take you a 1h 50m to get to the 9 th tee and off the 9 th 2h 10m to the 1 st tee = 4hrs. This may all be about to change with predictions of another east coast low forming this weekend. Let s hope in doesn t eventuate. The new Maintenance shed is progressing very quickly with the steel framework going up in the past week. Thursday morning the trucks arrived with the concrete panels for the walls and the walls were put in place by a crane and finished by lunch time. Over the coming weeks the remainder of the steel cladding and roof will be attached and the shed will start to look complete. Most of the services to the site are in place work will continue around the 9 th tee shortly connecting services to the clubhouse. Hope the weather stays fine enjoy your golf. While searching for Jack's ball in the rough, Henry accidentally kicked Jack's ball, which moved about 10 cm. Jack replaced his ball and played his next stroke. Which of the following is correct? a. Henry lost the hole. b. Henry incurred a penalty of one stroke. c. Jack incurred a penalty of loss of hole. d. There is no penalty to either player.

FROM THE WOMEN Pennant Teams continue to be the talk of the women around the club. Loads of enthusiasm and hard work are giving some fine results. I was the guest at Warringah last Friday to see our Silver 2 team grind out a Square with the eventual winners Pymble. Well done to this very committed team of Karen Smith (F/C), Lynne Clayton, Leonie Malcolm, Susan Hay, Susan Walker and Alison Gattas, as well as their convener Robyn McCormick. Look out next year. Bronze 1, under the guidance of Kim Sloane and with Clare John leading the team, had a win over Cammeray 4 1/2 to ½. Well done Rosemary West, Clare John, Elaine Coldham, Marg O Connell and Julie Preston. This week to Cammeray to take on Monash are Rosemary West, Clare John (F/C), Robyn McCormick, Liz Ruthven and Marg O Connell. Our Bronze 2 Shield players had a great 3/2 win over Monash and this week headed to Cromer to play Mona Vale. The team was Nicki Wiebe, Susan Ramsay (F/C), Lynne Parsons, Maria Russell and Catherine Hancock. Again our thanks to Helen Black for her assistance with this team. The Rules seminar at Cromer was well attended by Long Reef. If you missed this one, another is available soon please check the locker room notice board. Swingers 11 new players started the clinic with Michael last Tuesday and all seemed to have the hang of putting pretty quickly. Numbers in this group continue to grow and in the next few weeks they will be headed out on course for supervised play with our members. Thanks to those who have offered their time. FROM THE ARCHIVES. The recent storm and high tides has made the filling of sandbags a very current topic. Close examination of the 1927 panoramic photo on display in the Clubhouse, looking south, shows three majestic sand-hills in the background. Where and when did they disappear? The simple answer is to be found in WWII records and memories. In the rush to prepare Sydney for a likely invasion by the Japanese, with fear that Collaroy Beach could be a chosen landing point, Long Reef and Collaroy were strategically defended and prepared. The sand dunes to the south of the Golf Course were levelled and the sand trucked into Sydney city to fill sandbags for protection of buildings from bombing. Unfortunately the removal of sand dunes destroyed a Little Penguin colony. * The course lost five holes but battled on with an Army presence, loss of members, staff and revenue. An 18-hole game was played rotating through 13 holes, when play was possible at all. A close lookout had to be kept for notices circulated by Australian Military Forces, on notice boards or in the newspapers for the next date of Army practice with live Mortar bombs or Anti-Aircraft Practice exercises covering the Golf Course, Griffith Park and out to sea. Red flags would fly in warning at the entrance to the course and at the Trig point. Sand encroachment on to the course became an issue during the war and remained so even after the course was repaired and restored to 18 holes. In the 60 s a Par 3 hole was abandoned and the work to fortify the now 17th hole continued until the mounds were created. The Council, the Club and volunteer groups like Reefcare helped to make the dunes more stable. Compare the 1943 aerial photo below, with its expanse of sand, starting from the lagoon, with the Headland photo that appears on the feature page of the Club s website today. *Quote from Reefcare website Thanks to Lands Department and Warringah Library for a copy of the 1943 aerial photo. Rule 18-3a applies. Because the incident occurred during the search for the ball, there is no penalty. Jack acted correctly by replacing his ball, which had been moved by Henry. If Jack had failed to replace his ball he would have incurred the "General Penalty" for breach of Rule 18. In Matchplay the "general penalty" is Loss of Hole (Rule 2-6)...See also the Penalty Statement for Rule 18
