Very few people live there and it is dark for half of the year. Antarctica is like no other place in the world. In August and September, which is the ( 1 ) in Antarctica, the temperature sometimes drops as low as minus eighty-seven degrees Celsius. Winds can blow at more than 300 kilometers per hour. Antarctica is the most southerly continent and is bigger in area than Europe but smaller than South America. It is also the highest continent, most of the land being more than 3,000 meters high. It contains more than 70% of all the fresh water in the world, but in the form of ice, including massive glaciers, or rivers of ice. The sea around Antarctica contains many icebergs. Only a small part of them can be seen above the water. An iceberg has been seen with a tip bigger than the country of ( 2 ). 問 5. 次の英文を読み その内容に関する (1) (5) の質問に対して最も適切なものを それ ぞれ 1 4 の中から一つ選び その番号を記しなさい AFRICA Of all the continents in the world, only Asia has a bigger area than Africa. Africa is a continent surrounded by water. To the west of Africa lies the Atlantic Ocean; to the east is the Indian Ocean; to the north is the Mediterranean Sea; and to the northeast is the Red Sea. Many islands are considered to be part of the African continent, including Mauritius, which lies to the east of the mainland. The central part of Africa is one big, flat plain. There, lying across the warm equator, are Africa s famous rain forests and savannas, or grasslands. Far to the continent s north and south are mountain ranges, deserts and coastal areas. The vast Sahara Desert in northern Africa is the biggest desert in the world and it is actually becoming slightly bigger year by year. It is a kind of dividing line that separates North Africa from the area known as sub-saharan Africa. There are other interesting facts about the continent. It has the world s longest river, the River Nile, which is formed when two rivers, the Blue Nile and the White Nile, join together. The River Nile reaches the sea in Egypt but 95% of that country is desert. Perhaps Egypt brings an image of pyramids to mind, but there are actually more pyramids in the country of Sudan than in Egypt. Africa is known for its wide range of amazing wildlife. Though some have disappeared because of environmental damage, it is still home to many creatures. There are camels in the north (although these came originally from Arabia), penguins in the south, gorillas in the forests and lions and giraffes in the savannas. The island of Madagascar separated from the African mainland millions of years ago, so it is home to many unique species of animals. There are fewer than one billion people in Africa, which is less than the population of the country of India, but African peoples speak more than 2,000 different languages and live in 54 different nations. The African population is growing quickly, and the continent is home to some of the biggest cities in the world. However the majority of the people still live in rural areas. 7

(1) What is happening to the Sahara Desert? 1 It divides northern and southern Africa. 2 It is the biggest desert in the world. 3 It is gradually growing in size. 4 It is a very hot, dry area. (2) Why is it difficult for some animals to survive? 1 Some animals live in the rain forests. 2 There is a large variety of animals. 3 There are large mountain ranges in the north and south. 4 The continent has had environmental problems. (3) Why are some animals found only in Madagascar? 1 It is millions of years old. 2 It is not, now, part of the African mainland. 3 There are not so many people living there. 4 It has an amazing range of wildlife. (4) According to the passage, which sentence is NOT true? 1 The Red Sea is to the west of Africa. 2 Some countries in Africa are not on the mainland. 3 Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean. 4 The River Nile is the longest river in the world. (5) According to the passage, which sentence is true? 1 Egypt has more pyramids than any other country. 2 There have always been camels in Africa. 3 In Africa there are more languages than countries. 4 Most African people live in big cities. 8
