ABOUT BAJA SAE 1 Baja SAE is a collegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) The concept is to design, build, develop, promote and race a prototype, single seat off-road vehicle that can withstand the punishment of the toughest racing environments An additional goal of the SAE series is to generate financial support through sponsors, all while maintaining our individual academic excellence This series simulates real-world scenario of bringing a completly new product to the market, exposing the team members to possible situations we could face in our post-collegiate careers
THE TEAM 2 We are a team of UW-Milwaukee students working together to extend the knowledge learned in the classroom setting to a real world engineering application Mainly consist of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers Architectural, Business and other majors involved Finished in the top 8% over the 3-race season Best season to date: sponsorship, involvement, results
THE CAR 3 Each car is designed from the ground up, improving on past designs The engine is the only common component for every team Briggs & Stratton generously donates a 10 HP, 145 lb-ft torque OHV Intek to every team No modifications to the engine can be made Unique Design Features: Gaged CVT transmission Custom gearbox Heat-treated, chromoly steel rear H-arms with camber links and front A-arms make up the suspension Carbon fiber is utilized for the body panels, seat, and fuel splash guard to reduce weight
THE COMPETITION Each year there are a select number of International Competitions held in various regions around the United States The events are 3-4 days long and consist of a variety of events Static Events: This includes all safety inspections and tests The features of the cars are evaluated, quality of workmanship is scrutinized, and overall appearance is judged Dynamic Events: These events include rock climbing, hill climbing, acceleration, maneuverability, suspension testing, and traction courses Endurance Race: A 4-5 hour race consisting of over 100 different cars The tracks include a wide variety of terrain, ranging from straightaways to tight, complex wooded sections that demand concentration and awareness, to sky high jumps and bumps that test both man and machine Scoring is based on laps completed in the allotted race time 4
