EXAMPLE (YES) Market Goat Market Goat Market Lamb Market Steer Example (Yes) Market Goat Market Goat Market Lamb Market Lamb Example (NO) Market Steer Market Steer Market Steer Market Lamb

AUCTION DETAILS Animals are auctioned and sold to the highest bidder. Grand Champions of all breeds sold first followed by steers, lambs, and goats If original buyer wishes to resell, it is up to the discretion of the Extension Office to whom it will be resold to.

AUCTION GOALS Original Sale- Get the most money for the 4-H er Animals on Resale-Get the most money for the original buyer The Extension Office, not the 4-H er, determines the resale price.

THOUGHTS TO THINK ABOUT Do I want to keep my animal? Once an animal is sold, it is no longer your property. Buyer can choose to take possession immediately If you want to continue showing your animal, there is a chance the buyer will want the animal immediately and you will not be able to show that animal anymore Don t participate in the sale if you don t want to take the risk.

EXAMPLE 1 Market Steer is purchased for $2.00/lb by buyer. Buyer wants to keep animal for freezer beef Arranged time (Ext. Off. will help coordinate) animal will be delivered to processor Buyer will pay EO and EO will transfer to 4-H er

EXAMPLE 2 Market Steer purchased for $2.00/lb by buyer. Buyer does not want animal The steer is then resold for freezer beefhighest bid is $1.50. EO bills original buyer $.50/lb and resale buyer $1.50/lb

EXAMPLE 3 Market Lamb sold for $6.00/lb Buyer does not want lamb, so it is to be resold 4-H er wants to keep lamb and show at county fairs all fall. 4-H er will buy animal back at the EO determined price. The determined price will be deducted from the check the 4-H er receives from the original price. Ex. $6-$1.75 (determined price)=$4.25

DETERMINED KEEPING PRICE Option A- Market Determined If the determined price comes from a livestock market (Columbia), the price will be deducted from check and the 4-H er can do what they want with the animal. It is theirs to keep. Processor Determined Processor Determined Price 4-H Retains for Showing: EO will work with processor to determine if all lambs are needed at one time. If processor wans them over a period of time- 4-Her can schedule a later day and therefor $1.50 will not be deducted from check. 4-H Retains for Flock: Processor offers $1.75/lb, but 4-H er wants to keep the ewe lamb for their flock. $1.75 will be deducted from 4-H ers check and they can do what ever they want with the lamb.

WHAT DOES 4-H FAMILY NEED TO DO? Raising funds for the auction is a joint venture between the EO and 4-H er If you rely on others to do your bidding, you will have to accept the bid you get. Find Buyers and Supporters

REMINDING POTENTIAL BUYERS Reminders for 4-H families and potential buyers Just because you find a buyer for your animal, does not mean they will get the animal This is an auction setting- the highest bidder will get the animal. Buyers need to understand this is a live auction! Nothing is guaranteed. What should you do as a 4-H family? Stress the importance of the auction format. Encourage your buyer to bid on other animals if they do not get yours. We cannot afford to lose any potential buyers.

SOLICITING DONATIONS Ask early Make personal visits with 4-H ers doing most of the presentation The EO is happy to help get any documents or letters you may need. Follow up with personal visits and phone calls Stress importance of attending event If you get the feeling they won t attend, ask if they would be willing to make a contribution right then.

BUYER SOURCES Family member (Grandpa or Grandma) Family Business Friends or neighbors interested in a quality product Companies in which you do business with (barns, banks, insurance, auto, groceries, etc) Businesses associated with youth (Orthodontist) Politicians running for office (Fair is great marketing for them)

NOTHING IS GUARANTEED This is your sale! Guarantee your own success
