I was always impressed how gracefully, magically easy a big beautiful bird, an eagle, can glide in the sky observing from above the world. And what kind of feeling I could have if I only could do the same, glide in the sky and soar in the air as an eagle. My dream from childhood was always with me until I got a lucky chance to make my desire come true and experience the feeling of gliding as an eagle. It was a beautiful sunny day when Karl made his final call. Marina and Elisabeth already were outside waiting impatiently for new wonder of the day. In the Karl s car we saw a team of three guys - Steve, Terry and John who also were crazy like me Paragliding in Ulsan to experience this kind of sport for the first time. After greeting each other and making some silly jokes about what brought us all in this day together we headed to the paragliding school where master and instructor of paragliding Mr. Lee was already waiting for us. Mr. Lee told us that we were very special. Don t take me wrong... but only later I understood that we were first foreigners who were going to try out paragliding in his school. While we were waiting for wind to be suitable for us and some other guys who were coming from Busan, I guess we did our best in teasing each other with jokes about the first flight and meaning of parachute in an airplane. Finally everything was perfectly matched: the weather, people and good will. So, we hit on the top of the mountain. There was a gorgeous view from where we could see the lay out of all Ulsan. While the supporting staff was giving us the last instructions before taking off Mr. Lee already was in the air showing us the masterpiece of twisting and floating on his paraglide. In that moment Steve told - Johnny, you are the next to show us that you can do. Unfortunately in this game the heavier guys had to be first, so Steve was the one. When he dressed up paragliding outfit the moment of truth was eventually seen, feeling of thrill on his face was so high that Steve changes his cheer up look to questionable with mixture of scare. A moment later Steve with Mr. Cho were taken by the wind in the air. The next turn was mine. The moment of my truth was coming up. After command to dress into the outfit I understood there was no way back. I only told myself- Everything is going to be OK, no scary emotion, you can do it. Honestly speaking it took my gut to make this step and not every normal man could effort to do it in his life experience. Anyway in that time I still felt more excitement than scare and this was my driving force to try this crazy thing. Five minutes later my tandem partner was ready standing behind me attached at the same parachute and waiting for perfect snap of the wind. In the second we followed the signal -RUN RUN RUN. Parachute was lifted by wind; the straps became tighten and total weight of 170kg took up in the air. Fantastic! This is the moment of truth. I am flying!!! Such a feeling I only had in my dreams. Wind was carrying me. My scare was quickly growing into indescribable feeling of freedom and magic flying in the air. I pull the strops on left and we flew left, pull on right and we flew right, pull the same time left and right strops and wind lifted us higher. You even could not imaging how is easy to control and levering. Our parachute was like one big wing of a giant eagle floating in the sky. Controlling process of our big wing gave me feeling like I floating by myself since absolutely nothing was under my legs. Only tiny million strops like my nerves were connecting me to my wing. I was gliding in the sky - unforgettable feeling! Amazing view beneath us, all like on a map, all buildings, roads, and streets became tiny small. Cars on the roads looked like tiny ants in an ant house making their historical paths. Above us there was shining sun and crystal transparent sky with some random swimming by clouds saying Hello to the strangers in their boundless ocean. The city seemed very quiet, only the sound of strops when we changed our direction was bothering my ears from absolutely quietness. I cannot remember when I experienced the same silence last time, for me it was rather weird so I tried to talk with my flying partner and sang songs. Time was frozen in that moment - 30 minutes of paragliding passed like one and half hour and I didn t want to let time goes faster. It was paradise. Gliding as an eagle gave me really something that I had never experienced before. Now when I m writing this story and picturing what I felt there is something inside of me that is still difficult to describe and only by experiencing that is the only possible way to know how an eagle feels in the sky. Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to Karl and FLIK magazine, also Master of Paragliding Mr. Lee and his team. Also thank my beautiful wife Marina and Elisabeth, Terry, Steve and Johnny, for making my time enjoyable and fun. by Egor Gouzenko 08 09

W hen my friend Johnny showed me the article in the FLIK Magazine that had a photograph of someone paragliding and offering to pay the ticket and transportation fee in exchange for an essay about the experience, it seemed like a great idea. Still it took three weeks after we saw the offer before we sent an email asking if it was still available. Maybe we were hoping that it was too late. It looked a little scary. We were surprised when Karl replied from FLIK saying that it was still available but that FLIK would only pay for one person. We agreed immediately to pay for the other two tickets ourselves and split the cost among the three of us. There was some discussion back and forth as to where we would go to do it among the several paraglide outfits in Korea and we decided to go with the closest, right here in Ulsan. We wanted to go as soon as possible and on June 1 agreed to do it on June 11, ten days later. That left us a little over a week to figure out what we had gotten ourselves into so we could figure out to what degree of scared we should be. It is appropriate now to identify ourselves. Steve Ingels, Johnny Bookman and I, Terry Fanning, work for the Houston office of a freight forwarding company working on a construction project in Ulsan. Steve and I have been in Ulsan for over a year and Johnny has made five separate trips here over the last two years. We are Americans all residing in Houston now, but Johnny was raised a little outside of Houston and Steve and I both come from New Orleans originally. Where we come from there are no hills, just flat land with a climate that is very hot at this time of year. None of us have any experience in paragliding, sky diving, hang gliding or any sport or activity even remotely related to paragliding. We needed to know what we would be in for, so we surfed the internet trying to figure out what paragliding is. We learned what it is not. It is not jumping out of an airplane like sky diving and it is not hang gliding as hang gliders have metal frames. A paraglider seemed to be a banana shaped parachute that acts much like a hang glider but is able to hover in place with the participant seated instead of laying flat. We didn t determine how the parachute leaves the ground, guessing that you must have to jump off a cliff. It sounded scary that was certain. Being three guys, it doesn t matter how old we are to act like teenagers. We had ten days to call each other chicken, make jokes about the yellow streak on the other guy s back and make bets about who would win the biggest eyes contest, as in who would show their fear the most. Truth is, we were all nervous and concerned about how paragliding really works. The weather forecast for the big day said 90% chance of rain. A storm passed through Ulsan at about 1 a.m. that woke us up, making us think that the excursion would be called off. At daybreak the breeze was strong. Karl picked us up at 8 a.m. and took us to meet another participant at the Foreigners Compound. He had signed on late but would not let Karl say that we were full. He had never done anything like this either and was anxious to go. George (that was what he told us to call him since we would have trouble pronouncing his name) is a big Russian man. His wife and daughter came with him to watch. We then drove downtown to meet Mr. Lee, the man who was taking us out. We drove as a three car caravan to some hills not too far from the Ulsan airport. I had thought that there would be a paragliding facility, but we went to a public area in the hills. All of the paragliding equipment needed fit easily in the back of Mr. Sang-cheon Lee s van. Others met us on the hill to help. There would be two tandem paragliders in the air at a time. The forecast of rain was completely wrong. We didn t even have a threat of rain. But the strong breeze made us wait for a while before we could try. Mr. Lee took a solo flight as a test. Seeing him get ready and then take off got our blood going. When he landed easily right where he started, we felt confident. Steve would go first. Mr. Young-Guk Cho, the other experienced paraglider, fitted him with his tandem seat, which looked sort of like a legless chair strapped to his back and bottom starting at the neck and ending at his knees, and had him put on a helmet and a pair of gloves. The paraglide looks like a banana shaped parachute, with plenty of small strings connecting all over the bottom of it, not just on the edges like a sky diving parachute would. The material is light but strong. The front edge of the parachute has box shaped sections from one end to the other that fill with air when the breeze hits it. The rest of the parachute is just the thin material. Mr. Cho s seat looked like a shell worn by a snail, small at the top by his neck, getting bigger as it went down his back and turned at his, uh, seat. Mr. Lee was hooked to the paraglide chute and then hooked Steve in front of him. Helpers spread the chute open behind them and the chute filled. Steve and Mr. Cho started to run forward and were lifted into the sky. It was a sight to behold. It took only seconds. They were flying! Within moments they were floating in the sky above us. It looked like they were seated in chairs with their legs dangling, more comfortable than floor seating at a Korean restaurant. They drifted to the left and hovered. Then they floated forward, backward, higher and then over to the right. George was next and about 10 to 15 minutes later was floating in the sky with Steve. The ground crew was in touch with the flyers by walkie-talkie. It was determined that the strong wind made it a little shaky to land where they took off so they decided to go much lower to a construction site to land. We drove there to pick them up and went back up so that Johnny and I could have our turn. Johnny and I took off without incident, but not without the same butterflies that Steve and George had. It was exciting, unbelievable and beautiful. After Johnny and I landed, Karl from FLIK got a ride too. This is the next day and Steve cannot yet put into words, as he puts it, find the words to totally describe the feelings and thoughts of this surreal event. Johnny is flying home today and is very glad that he had this opportunity before leaving. I am a showoff and want everybody at work today to see the pictures we took. We three older teenagers now have different feelings than we did before we stepped off the ground to float in the sky. There is no more teasing each other about who is chicken. Now we want to know when we can do it again. Speaking for myself, I would like to take classes to learn how to paraglide on my own, not tandem. FLIK was able to help us find Mr. Lee s organization here in Ulsan. There are other paraglide organizations in Korea. FLIK should be able to help anyone interested to enjoy this great activity. by Terry Fanning www.ulsanpara.co.kr 10 11

Kevin Perreau Emily Ochoa Karina Morao What I liked about the school was that it was so close to home. HFS was much smaller than my previous school, there were less subjects here. But the teachers were very nice. The experience I will remember most was the overnight trip to Gyeongju. I am sad to leave the school, but am also looking forward to going back to Malaysia. I will remember my friends and Mr. Jacklin the most. What I liked most about the school was that they could teach me English in 18 months (before HFS I only knew Spanish). Compared to my previous school, HFS was better because I learned English and in my previous school I was taught Spanish. The one experience that I will remember is the Christmas play I did. Leaving school has left me feeling really sad because I have made a lot of friends who are leaving and I will miss the teachers who have help me during the last 18 months. I will remember my teachers and how unique HFS is the most. Chimaobi David Azuonye Alice Hollis What I liked most about the school was the teachers and their personal attention to us. I found that the standard of education here was very good - maybe we had less subjects, but the teacher s attention made us thorough with them. Of course the school is much closer to home than my previous school. My favorite experience was the sledging trip. I will be sad, will miss my friends and everybody in the school. I will remember Mr. Dyson and my friends the most, and will keep up with them. I liked when we did different kind of sports events because I like sports. HFS was way smaller than my other school because there was about 600 students, but HFS has around 90. When it was my birthday I got to be thrown around by the teacher It feels weird but at the same time happy that I did good in class. I will remember the teachers the most because they were the people who helped me through the 4 and a half years I studied in HFS. F or the first time in the history of HFS, a group of 6 /7 graders are moving on, transitioning from elementary to middle school. A simple but significant graduation ceremony was held, which was a precursor to the moving school farewell for Mr. and Mrs. Jacklin and Val Jervis. For some of the kids, this has been the main school of their young lives. Here despite their different backgrounds and experiences, they quickly settled down under the competent guidance of the teachers and with the help of the close knit community of Foreigners compound in Ulsan. The compound school is an experience like none other. Sure there are a number of drawbacks - lack of sports facilities and grounds being the prime one, funding an ever present concern. Hugh Dyson and his team cope with the situation as best as they can, improvising along the way. Indeed, while the long awaited expansion of the school will give it more classroom space, it will also take away one of the playing fields for all sport - the tennis court. Graduating from HFS by Vandy Prakash For Ishan, 3 years under Mr. Jacklin and the last under Mr. Dyson are years he will not forget. Ian mentioned in his short but meaningful speech at his school farewell that wherever he would go he would always look back at the school and life in the compound with fond memories. So will all the kids with their own memories of companionship and fun filled care-less days. And take home with them the brief goodbye message from Mr. Jacklin - Dig deep wherever you are. When I talked to the kids about the school, their descriptions and impressions of the school offered an insight into the HFS experience. Questions... What did you like most about the school? How does it compare to your previous school? What was one experience that you would remember most? How does it feel like to leave school? What will you remember most about HFS? Shazaan Hyder What I liked most about the school was the PE - the variety of games that everyone could play and the experiments in IPC. This school was smaller than my previous one and had much less facilities. But it was close to home and very personal. My favorite experience was the sledging trip. I will be very sad, because I may not see any of my friends again. But I will keep up with them. I will remember Mrs. Dyson and the other teachers and my friends. Ishan Prakash What I liked most about the school was that the teacher student relationship was cool. This school is much smaller than my previous one, but less students and more personal attention from the teachers. I enjoyed the school very much - lots of great experiences - no favorite one. I feel really bad to leave - would like to stay here with all my friends and teachers, but I also realize that I have to move on. I will remember the school as very comfortable and free, Mr. Jacklin and all my friends. Lucy Carlile Goodbye Korea! I love this country. I am going back to England, but I will never forget Korea and FLIK! Thanks Jin, Karl and Kelly for making my time in Korea wonderful and memorable. See ya. Aye Mon Myo I will miss HFS so much. Korea is a very nice place. I will miss Korea very much and my friends, Lucy, Alice and Emily. Bye! 12 13

Summer Special figures. The most difficult for me was shadows application but with each next lesson I improved my skills and did better. Despite that our group is sufficiently big, I have to admit that Mr. Kang pays equal attention to every student, duly explains and helps when something doesn t come out. Now we started stage of faces draw out. Initially it would be straight-line faces but step by step the tasks will become more complicated. Talent in Yourself by Yulia Aniskina After pencil drawing our course will start painting with oil-paints. On that stage every student has a choice: to continue and improve pencil drawing skills or to begin painting with aquarelle or with oilpaints. From now on the real Art Creativity starts! South Korea is amazingly beautiful country, and I hope that the skills of Orient art will allow me to reproduce the beauty of nature and life of Korea on my paintings in my own specific way, the way I see it. I kindly suggest you to visit these exciting courses and to open new talents in yourselves. Good luck! Me and my best friend Amalia Giavri (our husbands work together in Lloyd s Register Ulsan HHI) decided to attend these courses. I would like to express my gratitude to Amalia for her support and kind friendship. So, Amalia and I went to the first lesson. I would like to say that last time I was painting in middle school only and never passed any special courses, thus I was slightly nervous that I couldn t make it. Garlic Capital of Korea BBC, Antiques Roadshow, Year 2115 n Saturday the 24th of June, I had the chance to visit the O small farm town of Uiseong where I lived and worked the first year I came to Korea, and to run in the town s second Uiseong Garlic Marathon. Yes, you read correctly, the GARLIC marathon. For those of you who are not aware, but who could probably guess quite correctly, Korea, next to India, is the biggest consumer of garlic in the world (according to several Internet research sites). While Gilroy, California in the United States boast of being the garlic capital of the world (output agricultural production statistics, Perdue University), the town of Uiseong in north Gyeongsang Province is widely accepted as the garlic capital of South Korea. Garlic has been cultivated in Uiseong for almost five-hundred years. Records from the 11th king of the Joseon Dynasty read that the growing of garlic in the region was maintained by the family Choi of Chiseon-ri near present-day Uiseong. Uiseong garlic is a classification of cold region garlic which produces strong roots, exceptional flavor, and because the cloves are firm in texture, the garlic bulbs can be stored a long time. You can tell if the garlic you purchase is true Uiseong garlic, as each bulb is made up of no more than 6-8 cloves. Warm region garlics have substantially more cloves per bulb. In the case of garlic, more is not necessarily better. The climate in Uiseong is typical of the weather around the Daegu area - hot and sweltering in the summer and windy and bitter cold in winter. Because Uiseong sits along a valley plain with mountains on two sides that prevent humid summer winds from blowing moisture across the land, the hot, dry weather around Uiseong during the growing season is ideal for producing garlic. The plant does not require a lot of water, and supposedly, as I ve been told by some Uiseong farmers, the hotter and drier the growing season is, the hotter the garlic will taste. Apparently, when the weather is very hot and dry where garlic grows, the crop produces more natural oils to prevent dehydration of the plant from setting in. It is the oil that produces the pungent and strong, hot flavor in garlic. If you visit Uiseong from mid summer through early autumn, you can see hills - literally hills, some I ve seen were almost five or six meters high - of garlic bulbs, stems and shoots still attached, clustered one-next-to-the-other on the grounds of the agricultural co-operative at the east-end of town waiting to be shipped to market. And all around the Uiseong region, a traveller can see very large drying sheds full of garlic crops hanging upside-down drying in the hot summer air. Uiseong ma.neul as garlic is known in Korean is distributed throughout certain regions of the country where it brings a higher price in the market place than the standard garden variety garlic. The garlic grown in Uiseong is touted as exceptionally good for health because it is grown in soil that has been cleansed of various unwanted insects and bacteria by rice cultivation. Thus Uiseong garlic has more nutritional value than other garlic crops. Besides garlic, Uiseong is known for its fiery hot peppers, exceptionally sweet persimmons and apples, and large strawberries and peaches. Also, peony flowers are grown in fields the size of football pitches just outside of town. Peonies produce a substance that is used in Chinese medicine and anti-cancer research, and in cosmetics. During their peak flowering season, the peonies cover the fields around Uiseong in what appears to the eye to be blankets of crimson coloured velvet. It s quite a sight to see. The fruits and peppers of Uiseong aren t grown in the quantity that garlic is grown, but their quality is very high and they are prized by people nationwide, especially the peppers for their kickin-the-butt fiery flavor. They, too, like the garlic, require little water and produce lots of natural oils, which like the garlic, makes for the strong, hot taste. There is more to the Uiseong region than just agricultural products and farming. The mountains around Uiseong are excellent for hiking, although they can be strenuous at times. Even though they are not particularly high in elevation, they can be quite steep. Flying Phoenix Mountain (671 meters) is popular among hikers, as is Geumseongsan which was made by the first dead volcano in South Korea. It is part of the greater Taebaek Mountain range. There are three very old temples nestled in the pine-laden mountains around Uiseong. Gowunsa, built in 681 A.D. and Daegoksa, built in 1389 A.D. The third temple is Sujeongsa which sits in the middle of Sanwun Village also known as the village that sits above the clouds. These places are truly worth the visit for those travellers who like peace, calm and serenity. Two hotspring hotels are very nearby - Binggye Hotspring which has strong curing waters of lithium, strontium and sodium, and Tabsan Hotspring where the waters come from the cavernous depths in the mountain made by the Geumseongsan dead volcano. There are also the geological phenomena of uh.lum gu.mung (ice hole) and ba.lam gu.mung (wind hole) not far from Uiseong. They are very interesting places to visit in that even in the heat of an Uiseong summer, very cold air comes roaring (literally roaring) out of the bowels of the earth, cooling off any traveller who is fortunate enough to be standing nearby their entrances. So folks, take a journey to old Uiseong township and pick up some of the hottest peppers and some of the most nutritious garlic produced in Korea. Then go for a hike up Flying Phoenix mountain, an ethereal walk through the village that sits above the clouds, and a long soak in Tabsan or Binggye Hotsprings. Your body and mind will thank you. Just a note for anyone interested: The second Uiseong Garlic Marathon was a 21.3 kilometer run through a very bucolic, picturesque countryside, traversing hill and dale, the Nakdong River, two sleepy farm villages, and ending with a finish that wound its way along one of the two main streets of town, with local folks banging gongs, beating drums, and wishing the runners the encouraging Korean cheer of: F.I.G.H.T.I.N.G. - On my left we have Professor Lee Chi from Cambridge University specialized in Ancient Asian Artifacts and on my right we have...? - Mr. Ledderhof - And on the table we have, what appear to be a silver cigar holder and a smaller silver cigarette case for just one cigarette, but that is not what it is, right Professor Lee? - No, no, definitely not. First of all, cigars were not popular in Asia, or Korea to be precise because that is where these two items originate from, and secondly, when you open them you ll see that it is actually a knife in a silver casing. - Like a pocket knife? - Yes indeed, very much so, expensive and highly ornamental ones. - Now before you tell us more about these knifes, let s ask Mr. Ledderhof how they came to be in his possession. - My Father gave them to me on my wedding day and that is when he got them from his father. - A bit like a family heirloom, but it is older than that right Professor Lee? - Absolutely, I would date them back as far as the early 21st century, 2005, 2006, around that time - That would be possible since my great, great grandfather was born in Korea in 2006 I believe... - Now Professor Lee, tell us more about these knifes. - What we have here are actually a masculine and feminine Jangdo. The small one, which is so elegantly shaped with the curled ends, is the feminine one and the large one with the straight ends would be worn by a gentleman. But not just the shape tells me which is which, when you look closely you can see writing on the blade itself. These are Chinese characters and if you compare the two blades you can see that the characters are different. On the feminine blade it says which means one in spirit knife and on the masculine one it says which means gentleman s knife. But both these text are an expression of loyalty to the Emperor or King. - Did you know all this Mr. Ledderhof? - No, but I know that the men would wear the knife, visible, hanging from a belt on the hip and the women would hide the knife under their Hanbok(Korean clothes) on the chest - That is right. Unfortunately the tassels from Korean Macrame that would hang from the silver rings are missing. And in the 21st century, women would wear their Jangdo visible as well, like a charm or jewel. Now the interesting thing is what the knifes were used for; although these two are over 100 years old, the tradition of these knife dates back to the early age of Groyeo, Seonbi, Korea noblemen, some 900 years ago and the knifes were used in the past as a symbol to protect loyalty to the king for men and chastity for women. But as you can see, the larger knife has two chop sticks integrated, also made out of silver. And together with the silver blade this was used to test if the food was not poisoned. - Really?! - Well, not anymore at the time that those two particular knifes were made by a craftsman named Dong Hun, his family name is engraved just above the blade... - A craftsman?! You mean to tell me that these knifes were made by hand?! - Yes, no computer, machine or robot was used here and very simple basic tools did the trick. If you look very closely, you can see that the decorations on the handle are meant to be the same as on the cap but that they differ ever so slightly, that, my friend, is called craftsmanship, honest hand work or art and in today s world; a symbol of humanity, worth a great deal... - Yes, what can you tell us about the value of these knifes? - Those two knifes are made in silver and the blade of the larger one is made of steel. But you had knifes with a simple wooden handle and cap for the less well to do. You would also have knifes made out of bone, horn or even jade with gold detail. These knifes, the smaller one, I guess would have cost back than, about 80,000 which was 45, the larger one would be triple that. For Koreans at the time this was a lot of money and the tradition of the knives was almost lost. In less than 40 years the number of silver workshops that made these knifes dropped dramatically in the Ulsan region, from around 40 in the 1960 s to only two in the 21st century. This of course adds to today s value which I estimate, at auction, on a good day...well, for the pair around 10,000 minimal... - They are delightful objects of desire, definitely conversation pieces and great family heirlooms! - Absolutely. - Both in the East as in the West.
