Last year we talked about record high beef prices that producers were getting and the significant economic boost to our industry. We certainly did create a new bench mark for cattle prices, and that uncharted price level will always be in our minds moving forward. Although it wasn t totally the healthiest scenario for our industry with prices that high (risking lower beef consumption due to record high prices for consumers), it was a great opportunity for producers to gain some much needed momentum. Even with the price corrections that have taken place, we are still sitting pretty solid and the overall enthusiasm, for the most part, is as strong as ever. As a seed stock producer, it is interesting, and challenging, to move forward with genetics that will make our cow herd stronger. By stronger, we mean, providing superior longevity, and maintaining calving efficiency, without loosing performance. There are many traits that can be enhanced immensely in one single cross, but we feel that there are no traits that we would want to lose ground on, to enhance another trait. In other words, we see great economic value in balanced genetic selection. Our calves are raised with no creep feed, and we feel this is the best possible way to judge how our cows are milking. We also put tremendous effort into making sure that udder quality is part and parcel to our genetic selections. Cows with tipped udders, or large bulky udders, have increased reduction in milk production, and next to bad feet, and being open, this is probably the biggest factor triggering being culled. As a commercial or purebred cattleman, you can be assured that we are continually concentrating on improving all important economic traits. All of the bulls will be scanned for carcass merit and that information will be available prior to the sale on a supplement sheet. If you would like to see the scan results, watch our website as we will have the information posted as soon as it is available. Videos of every bull and female is also available on our website, but if you would like a DVD of the sale offering, let us know and we will send you one. In Tribute Gary Smith was one of those guys that everyone knew, and who knew everyone. Countless people from around the world who were involved in agriculture experienced his wry sense of humour and business savvy. Gary was a trailblazer in the tough and challenging business of export marketing, and was responsible for negotiating sales of thousands of head of Canadian cattle to worldwide destinations. We will surely miss his calls arranging tours for delegations from Mexico, Russia, Japan, China, Columbia, South America, Kazakhstan where ever they were from, Gary had the unique ability to make friendships and gain their trust so that contracts could be signed. It was always a great pleasure and honour, for us, to be a small part in welcoming these visitors to the Canadian way of raising beef. Our industry lost a great ambassador, as well as a great friend. Thank you to everyone who supported Rick Silbernagel on his road to recovery! The Benefit, hosted by Mike and Val Graham, Crossfield, was a huge success!
