By Anuska Fernandez (Dance artist) Event Description Dancing at the Square is an open dance event to celebrate London s cultural diversity through dance. The event will take part at Hornsey Town Hall Square on 15th July 2012 from 11am to 3pm. This participatory project aims to reflect the different cultures through different dance styles, as well as approach dance and culture to everyone, from all ages and abilities. A series of previous age-specific workshops will bring together a cast of local people from six to over 70 years old, to culminate with an outdoor celebration of dance. The piece will show a mixture of different dance styles combined with contemporary dance, integrating the space and its elements as part of the performance. There will be free dance taster classes throughout the day, lead by professionals. The classes are open for everyone who wishes to participate, and experience some of the world s dance movements and rhythms included in the performance, such as Salsa, African, Flamenco or Indian dance, as well as Zumba workshops. Concept The performance aims to reflect the different cultures through different dance styles as well as unite communities, culture, sport and education in line with the values of the Olympics through: Promoting Dance, health and culture Encouraging people to get into dance and increase their fitness levels in a fun and creative way. The activity will also encourage the participation of people who do not normally do much physical activity. The process of learning and working together will bring very positive benefits, physically and psychologically to the participants. Team working is essential to develop the work as well as individual creativity

It will bring vibrancy to Town Hall square and community benefits to the area. It will highlight the squares structure using and integrating the space and its elements such as benches, fountain and stairs as part of the performance. The project will promote London as an international centre for dance. All dance workshops, taster classes and performance will be free of charge. Event Structure 1. Development (Activities) A. Performance The participants will be divided into 4 groups of 15 pre-registered people approximately. Each different age specific group will be lead by a specialized instructor. The performance groups will start the rehearsals from April to July at YMCA Fitness Centre and Rokesly Junior School at Crouch End. We will create short dance pieces to finally put together to create an unique choreography of 20-30min length, approximately,to perform on the day of the event. B. Taster Classes Throughout the event, there will be 4 taster classes, to allow as much people as possible to be actively involved. The classes will be easy to follow and in line with the overall concept of the event; a taste of dance through different cultures. C. Live Music There is the possibility to include musicians to play live music. They would make a single piece based on repetitive rhythms of percussion, which would accompany the performance

D. Childrens Area (Grass area) Whereas the parents are dancing or tasting classes, an entertainer will be performing and playing with the kids in the Children s Area (grass).they will also have activities based on movement and juggling. 2.
