CANOE SPRINT Los Angeles 1984 K-1 500m (W) Seoul 1988 C-2 500m (M) London 2012 C-1 1000m (M) Rio 2016 K-4 500m (W) INTRODUCTION Canoe featured on the programme of the Games of the VIII Olympiad in Paris in 1924, as a demonstration sport. It became a full Olympic sport from the Games in Berlin in 1936. Women were accepted for the Games of the XIV Olympiad in London in 1948. KEY STAGES Entry Women s inclusion New events 1934: At the 33 rd IOC Session held in May in Athens, it was decided to include canoeing in the list of sports from among which the Organising Committee could choose which it wanted to stage. 1947: At the 41 st IOC Session held in Stockholm in June, it was decided to accept women in canoe events at the Games of the XIV Olympiad in London in 1948. 2009: At its meeting in Berlin in August, the IOC Executive Board approved the request from the International Canoe Federation (ICF) concerning the replacement of the men s C2 500m event with the women s K1 200m event. It also agreed to replace three men s 500m sprint events with 200m events. Gender equality 2017: The IOC Executive Board decided to reduce the number of men s events from 8 to 6 and to include 2 new women s events.
