SPECIES NOTES The Harpy Eagle Harpia harpyja is the heaviest and most powerful of all eagles. Historically, the species had a wide range extending throughout tropical America from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. Today however, it is considered rare and near threatened, especially in the northern part of its range. Wild Harpy Eagles are declining in number due mainly to deforestation and trophy shooting. The species is dimorphic, with the female (7600-9000g) being significantly larger than the male (4000-4800g). Adult wild Harpy Eagles only breed every 2 3 years due to the considerable parental care involved. Nests are large structures of sticks, built by both sexes in a main fork of an emergent tree. A two egg clutch is common, however only one chick is reared to maturity. The incubation period ranges from 54-56 days and chicks fledge at ~140 days (6 months). The female carries out most of the incubation duties but is assisted by the male. In the wild, the juvenile remains within the nest territory and is dependent on the adults to provide food for at least 12 months. The hatch date for wild caught birds listed in the studbook has been estimated as 01 January +/- 1 year they were collected.
