The t. Philip Toolbox Wing-t Offensive playbook is far more offense than we could ever consider running in any given season. It is what the name implies a toolbox. It is an offensive system that we can use to fit to our players talents in any given year. We re not going to bring a sledge hammer to the field when we need an adjustable wrench. We are going to go into each game with the necessary tools to get the job done. t. Philip atholic entral is a high school of approximately 14 students. With 7 boys in the school, 5 4 of them play on the football team. We average between 8 1 boys per class that participate in Tiger ootball. We are blessed with great young men who work and play hard as they represent the ighting Tigers. ut with limited numbers the talent pool will vary from season to season. ome years we may have good size. ome years it may be our speed. Maybe we will have a great passer for a period and then a great runner take the snaps for a while. We may even have the whole package for some time. However, one thing we will never have is great depth. Our depth will always be shallow. This is where you can get into trouble with substituting to rest guys who are gassed or cover positions when the injury bug bites. These are times that depth can be a serious factor. Numbers are not the only factor to contend with at t. Philip. We compete in the aint Joseph Valley onference. It is a conference that many consider to be the toughest small school conference in the state of Michigan. We have three teams in our conference that have won multiple state championships. Our 5 league champion was also a state champ and two other teams won district titles. our teams from the JV played in district championship games. ive of our seven conference foes have more than double our enrollment.

WHAT I THE WING-T? MOE THAN A OMATION. In the words of Tubby aymond the former H at the University of Delaware. The Wing-t is more than a formation. It is a versatile offense characterized by a multiple nature. The Wing-t may be correctly described as a four-back formation and a running offense. The Wing-t may also be correctly described as a one-back formation and a spread offense. trangely enough, the Wing-t offense s renown running game is paradoxically dependant upon the threat and execution of the passing game. The nature of the principle passing scheme is naturally one of play-action with the quarterback either keeping the ball toward or away from the flow of the attack. Wing-t football can be described as sequence football. equence football is a type of football attack that threatens several points of the defensive scheme as the ball is snapped. equence football should not be inferred as a plan in which every play is run in order. equence football is an attack in which defenders are placed in a position of conflict. A defender is in conflict when he must react in a certain manner to stop a particular play, and the reaction places him in a vulnerable position against another play in the series. onflicts are created by play sequencing the creation of conflicts being the underlying factor behind the success of the Wing-t. ecause of the success that the ull House T teams in Michigan high school football have enjoyed for more than a decade now, many coaches do not understand the true nature of the Wing-t. The t. Philip offense is a simple, logical, and multiple offensive system. The multiplicity of this offense allows us to be as wide open or as conservative as our talent demands. locking rules and schemes are easy for players to learn and can be installed in a short period of time. The offense is extremely flexible and presents many conflicts to the defense that is preparing to play against it. ormation and sequential play multiplicity combined with conflicting defensive reads and keys make it tough to gang up on any one player, play or series within the offense. Multiple and flexible formations give us the ability to create desired match-ups and overloads. Our running game constantly threatens our opponent s weaknesses with speed, power, and finesse. The bases of our attack is the Jet and ocket sweep series. We are able to get to the point of attack quicker than the defense with maximum force and slow pursuit with the finesse created by great faking and conflicting read keys. Jet and ocket motion not only enhances the speed of the ball carrier on sweeps but influences defensive pursuit and reaction time. This speed attack allows us to stretch the defense horizontally and opens up our inside running game. trength of formation can be changed with these speed motions and counters and playaction passing are enhanced dramatically. The IMPOTANT thing to remember is that Jet and ocket, when treated as a motion and not a play can be combined with most Wing-t principles and staples. Our passing game allows us to neutralize our opponent s physical advantages. Our passing game is primarily one of play-action that is designed to take advantage of the defense s schemes to stop our run game. Our passing game is also considered a first strike and has a big play capability for us. It is a serious threat to the defensive team that wants to involve its secondary in run support. Therefore significant time will be spent practicing the individual and team skills and fundamentals required of a strong passing attack.

My philosophy of offensive line blocking has changed dramatically as a coach. or my entire career I have been a base drive blocking and getting after them line coach. That s still what I believe to be the best today! ut in all those places I had the cats to execute those types of schemes. I was always in a place where we didn t have very many plays and even fewer formations. We were usually one of the ig Dogs in our conference so playing power football was easy. Then I became the head coach at a small high school where we re not the big dogs. We have many disadvantages as far as number of players, maturity and depth. We are not the type of program that can afford to go toe-to-toe with several of the programs on our schedule. Therefore we have developed our own blocking schemes that involve simple sequential gap blocking rules. A player does not have to spend any time counting defenders or worrying about stunts and fronts. He simply comes to the line and sequentially blocks his rule from the snap to the echo of the whistle. We believe that gap blocking is not only easier for our players to learn and execute, but it also solves some of the problems that defenses give us. It cuts down on the angling and twisting troubles that defenses can cause. It also cuts down on the linebacker run through as we talk to our players about creating walls and walling up defenders as we force them to go over the hump. Gap blocking causes conflicting reads for defenders as well. Defensive linemen are taught to squeeze down with down blocks. This is especially true against Wing-t teams. queeze down and be ready to wrong arm that trap boy! y employing a gap blocking scheme to our off-tackle plays we put a defensive lineman in conflict. He is uncertain if the play is an inside trap or an off-tackle until it s too late and the offensive lineman to his outside is using his momentum against him to seal him inside. If he doesn t squeeze down we are going to trap him all day. Thus we keep him in eternal conflict.

The same can be said about influencing linebackers. If I m a linebacker and my read key blocks down, I d better be ready to step up. If I don t I may wind up flat on my back. A linebacker who steps up against a gap blocking team may get caught up in the wall and taken out of the play. o gap blocking not only influences defensive linemen, but linebackers as well. The split-flow of most of our backfield actions combined with conflicting reads is a great equalizer for the smaller lineman, or the ones who have had to play on both sides of the ball for four solid quarters and might be getting a little gassed. or these reasons we believe that gap blocking also fits our philosophy of using the toolbox approach. We can use several formations, motions, backfield actions while we attack several points along the defense and not put a heavy burden on our offensive line. This is what our offense is based upon imple multiplicity without putting a lot of doubt in our players minds about who they re supposed to block on any given play. This concept is nothing new by any means. Zone teams that run the inside and outside zone stretch play use gap blocking in their trapping and counter trey blocking schemes. It is the same for us as we stretch the defense with our Jet and ocket plays (which are one blocking scheme for our kids) we use the gap scheme in most of our other plays. Therefore the gap blocking scheme fits all the important criteria for our system. It is simple to learn and execute. It assists us when we are physically outmanned. It can create conflicting reads for defenders. The gap blocking schemes can be used with multiple formations, motions and backfield actions that add to the multiplicity of the t. The Jet weep is OU PA. We believe it is the one play in our offense that can be successful no matter what our talent level is. We believe the Jet weep magnifies our players abilities. Jet motion gives our ball carriers a running start as they receive the ball going as fast as they can. It s my opinion that jet motion can magnify a ball carriers speed by two tenths of a second (in a 4-yard dash) over the traditional hand-off from a three-point stance. In other words, a typical 4.9 kid is actually a 4.7 when he gets the ball using jet motion. The faster the player, the faster he appears when running jet motion. Another plus of the Jet weep is that it hits the flank so fast we don t have to block anyone from the play side b-gap back. There s not many plays in football that you don t have to block anyone and still have a successful play. The speed completely eliminates the linebacker run through. People try it, but they can t touch the play as long as the motion back is going as fast as he can. Therefore, we don t have to be physically superior to our opponents to be successful when running this play. If our players can just get a piece of their man we will get to the edge and gain positive yardage. It is a formation friendly play. It is a play that we can run to any flank and from any formation. The blocking rules are simple and flexible. We utilize more than one flank blocking scheme which helps us account for any defensive adjustments or personnel match-up.

As we continue to sweep teams from sideline to sideline we force interior defenders to run with us. This has a devastating effect on defensive linemen throughout the course of a game. inebackers are put in conflict with the split-flow of our backfield action and their pursuit of our sweep is diminished. It also creates tremendous conflict for secondary defenders who are put in a position of run support and pass coverage. These are the core reasons why we believe that the Jet weep is the PEET play for t. Philip football: 1. Easy to install, teach, and rep.. We don t have to be physically superior to our opponents.. The speed of jet motion magnifies the speed of our backs. 4. It puts a horizontal stretch on the defense and forces their their big boys to run sideline to sideline. 5. The split-flow in our backfield forces the linebackers to respect the inside running game first. 6. econdary defenders must not only be physical tacklers but also take away the play-action passing lanes. 7. The Jet weep may be the most formation friendly play in football. As excellent of a football play as the Jet weep is, it s even more devastating when it is viewed as a motion and combined with other staples of the Wing-t offense. That s how we use this attack to create conflict, and put doubt in the minds of our opponents. We use the constant threat of jet motion to set our opponent s up for failure.

The ocket weep and motion when combined with the other Wing-t staples in our toolbox is also a great attack for us. The ocket weep hits the flank even faster than the Jet does. It is easier for the back running the ocket to make quicker cuts than it is on Jet. However, the backfield deception is greater with Jet. ocket provides many of the same benefits as Jet: 1. It hits the flank with great speed.. We block it exactly like Jet so we don t have to be physically dominant.. It creates great conflict for all defensive positions. 4. It opens up the play-action passing game for big plays. 5. It can be run from every formation and to every flank. 6. We can run most of our Wing-t staples from our rocket motion. Our style of calling plays with the Jet and ocket motion is not a random shot in the dark, but a calculated attack based on personnel and scheme. ome games the ocket will be used more than Jet and vice versa.

The t. Philip uck eries is the old traditional Dead-T series that we ran at Olivet ollege and is successfully employed by several high school teams in the state of Michigan. It consists of the Middle Trap, Wide Trap, H Off-Tackle, Keep, uck weep, and W ounter plays. It also consists of a strong play-action passing game, which in our offense is the 4 41 passing series. Although these plays are most traditionally run from the ull House T and the Double Tight Wing formations, we can and will run them from several of our pread sets using various motions and alignments to enhance their big play capability. The talent in our system will determine the degree to which we take this series. Their may be seasons that we can line up in the T and just play smash mouth football. Other seasons we may not have that personnel. ike Jet and ocket, we will use uck motion to set up and enhance our passing game. T. PHIIP EIE IGHTING TIGE

The t. Philip ly series is a hybrid. It is a concept that developed through research of the Willamette University ly Offense. The Willamette offensive base is a three receiver split-back jet offense. Through study we came up with the concept of infusing the Jet, ocket, and uck series with the use of our off-set fullback formations. The use of Jet, ocket, and uck motions force the defense to continue respecting the horizontal speed sweeps while we use power and finesse inside with our fullback and quarterback running the ball. We believe it is another way of getting a good running quarterback involved in our running game in the same way that option teams use their triple option and mid-line veer plays. The ly series as another way of attacking the defense without drastically changing the concepts of our offense. Players use the same techniques and fundamentals that they use on all other plays in our arsenal. It is also another tool we have in our running game to set up the defense for a big play-action pass play. The ly series is a tool that uses simple multiplicity to enhance our offensive capability from year to year.

T. PHIIP PAING GAME IGHTING TIGE

The t. Philip passing game is designed to take advantage of the run support a defense is trying to employ with their secondary. Jet and ocket motion demand an immediate reaction by the defense to slow down the fast horizontal running game. We do not believe a defense can stop our sweep game without involving their secondary and it s at these times when the defense begins to over-react to the run that they leave holes in the secondary for big pass plays. Our passing game is also designed to be a first strike home run shot when we catch the defense misaligned, back on their heels or we have a physical advantage with our receivers. Our 9 series -step game is one that we use to take advantage of such situations. One of the great things about using the Jet and ocket to set up the passing game is that we rarely get a rush from the defense. They re more concerned with moving laterally than rushing up field after our quarterback. Even when we use empty backfield formations we rarely get a pass rush that effects our quarterback s ability to get rid of the ball. Another thing that helps our pass protections is that our quarterbacks are taught a simple progression to read and find the open receiver. Our passing routes are designed to come open quickly and give our quarterback an easy target in a similar manner as the un-n-hoot Offense. Another benefit of our passing game is that most of our plays can be run from most of our formations and use any type of motion. This enhances the multiplicity of our offense without adding any additional burden on our players and at the same time adds to the defensive conflict.

This is the Toolbox Wing-t offensive playbook that will allow us to install the exact type of offensive plays and schemes necessary to move the chains and put points on the board. It is the basic philosophy of taking what the defense gives us and attacking where the defense is the most vulnerable. TO E EETIVE we need to teach our players the basic football skills necessary to be the best football players they can be. Our players must hustle and take pride in being a ighting Tiger! Attention to detail and doing the little things perfectly are musts when you take this approach to offense. The staff must also teach the basic game management skills like down and distance and managing the clock. Penalties, missed assignments, and turnovers must be dirty words to everyone in the program.
