SMART SCALE Application Rio Mills Rd/Berkmar Dr Extended Connection Status: Scored ID: F2-0000001408-R02 General Point of Contact Information Point of Contact Name Kevin McDermott Point of Contact Phone (434) 296-5832 Point of Contact Email kmcdermott@albemarle.org Information Short would construct a 1/4 mile, 2-lane roadway connecting the existing Rio Mills Road to Berkmar Drive Extended (under construction) to address the use of a deficient unpaved road by trucks and other local through traffic on Earlysville Road. tice of Intent Yes Title Rio Mills Rd/Berkmar Dr Extended Connection Principal Highway Does this project include any improvements to non-vdot maintained roadways? Detailed would construct a 1/4 mile, 2-lane roadway connecting the existing Rio Mills Road to Berkmar Drive Extended (currently under construction). The proposed roadway design would be a 2-lane roadway with sidewalk on one side and a shared-use path on the other connecting to the bike and pedestrian faciliites under construction on Berkmar Drive Extended. This project would remove use of the unpaved and deficient segment of Rio Mills road located adjacent to the Rivanna River and within prime breeding habitat of the Spotted Salamander. The proposed roadway would provide an improved connection to Berkmar Drive extended and on to US 29 and other connected roadways. The existing quarry on Rio Mills generates high volumes of heavy truck traffic that the deficient, unpaved roadway is unable to handle. The project would improve overall connectivity throughout the region. ID: F2-0000001408-R02 Page 1 of 13
