COMMUNITY ACTION TREKS LTD Stewart Hill Cottage, Near Hesket Newmarket, Wigton, Cumbria, CA7 8HX Tel: 01768 484842 Email: info@catreks.com Web: www.catreks.com ISLAND PEAK, GOKYO LAKES AND EVEREST BASE CAMP Grade: Expedition Land-only duration: 28 days Kathmandu - Kathmandu Trekking days: 23 Maximum altitude: 6189m Minimum numbers: Requires just 4 participants to guarantee these departures at the advertised price. Dates and prices: Our latest dates and prices list is available at www.catreks.com or from the CAT office. For a century, climbers and trekkers have been attracted to the world s highest mountain, and have discovered the breathtaking beauty of the region and friendliness of its people. This is an opportunity to see the major areas of the Khumbu region whilst also taking in two excellent views of Everest and a major trekking peak on this action-packed and varied trek. This trek takes us up the quieter Gokyo valley, from where we climb Gokyo Ri 5360m, for an impressive view of Everest. We then cross over the Cho La pass, which gives us access back into the busier Khumbu region, where we follow the trail to Gorak Shep. This is our base for the trek to Everest Base Camp and for the ascent of Kala Pattar 5545m. We then trek over the Kongma La and head towards Island Peak Base Camp for the culmination of our efforts, when we ascend our trekking peak and stand at a lofty 6189m, (20,304 ft). This is a fantastic, varied and diverse tour. From Kathmandu we fly to Lukla, and the adventure begins as we land at its tiny airstrip. We spend two days trekking through the homelands of the Sherpa people, among their villages and monasteries, with distant views of Everest and Ama Dablam, to reach Namche Bazaar where we have a day to acclimatise, an important factor in your enjoyment of the trek. From Namche the route continues before branching off up the Gokyo Valley. Several days in the valley bring us to a dramatic landscape of cobalt blue lakes, alpine pastures and sparkling glaciers. Climbing Gokyo Ri 5360m may bring memorable views of Cho Oyu 8153m, across to Pumori 7145m, Changtse 7583m, Everest 8848m, Nuptse 7896m and Lhotse 8501m. With Makalu 8463m in the distance and all the way around to Ama Dablam 6856m and Taweche 6542m. A finer view of the Khumbu cannot be had. For the next part of our journey we cross the Cho La, a high level pass that connects back to the main Khumbu valley. We then join the main Everest trail and follow in the footsteps of the expeditions who have set out to conquer the worlds highest mountain. At Gorak Shep we are ideally located to follow the trail up to Everest Base Camp, the site of so many hopes and aspirations, and to climb Kala Pattar for our second panoramic view of Everest. To get to Island Peak Base Camp we head over the Kongma La and alongside the Imja Khola, with Island Peak directly ahead of us and the impressive Nuptse/Lhotse wall to our left. Although Island Peak takes us higher than we have been before, it is technically quite easy, and by now we will be well acclimatised, and it is a fitting end to this magnificent tour of the Khumbu region. All that remains is for us to trek back along the Everest trail, reflecting upon our recent achievements. To enjoy the trek and climb fully, you need to be fit and regular mountain walkers who have had some snow and ice experience in conditions found during the winter months in Scotland, since we will be using ropes, crampons and ice axes. Ascents and descents on some days will exceed 1000m with steep sections in places. The trek also involves time at high altitude, which may affect your performance, though rest days are built into the itinerary to help you acclimatise. If you have any doubts as to your suitability for this trip you can telephone us for advice. Land-only prices: The cost of flights, in particular those to Nepal, are less predictable than they used to be. Airlines now request full payment upfront. As a result, we will quote you a land-only cost, and quote separately for the cheapest flights we can find at the time of your booking. We will, however, require full payment for the flights prior to booking them. If you prefer to search for alternative flights yourself, we can sell you the trek at the land-only price. Important note minimum numbers: Before booking flights, please note that this trip requires a minimum of 4 trekkers before we can guarantee the departure at the advertised price. Please note that should you decide to book your own flights, it is essential that you check with the Community Action Treks office to ensure that the departure is guaranteed before committing financially to any flights or travel arrangements.

OUTLINE ITINERARY Walking and journey times are approximate Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Day 9 Arrive Kathmandu Transfer to hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore or relax by the hotel pool. Free day in Kathmandu Explore the fascinating city of Kathmandu, with its temples and markets, or take an optional excursion (can be booked locally through our Nepal office) into the Kathmandu Valley. Fly Kathmandu to Lukla, Trek to Phakding 2600m 2½ hours walking We have an early start for the spectacular mountain flight to the tiny airstrip at Lukla 2827m. At Lukla we meet with our porters and begin the trek with a short walk to Phakding 2600m where we camp for our first night on trek. Phakding to Namche Bazaar 3440m 5 hours walking A steady climb through the fertile Dudh Khosi valley, with its many farms and settlements, to Namche Bazaar 3440m, the most important Sherpa town and a former trading centre with Tibet. Namche Bazaar acclimatisation day Today is an acclimatisation day. Namche Bazaar is well worth exploring, with its Buddhist monastery and distant views of Everest. For better acclimatisation it is recommended that you walk to the Everest View Hotel (½ day walk) or to one of the nearby villages such as Khunde, or Thame. Namche Bazaar to Phortse Tenga 3675m 5 hours walking We leave Namche Bazaar and trek around to Kyangjuma, or alternatively we can go up and over via Khumjung before the trail, via Mong, to Phortse Tenga 3675m which is situated on the banks of the Dudh Khosi. Phortse Tenga to Dole 4040m 3 hours walking We now follow the Dudh Khosi for the next few days and, whilst the distances are relatively short, it is important that we don t go too high too quickly in order that we can acclimatise properly. This is a vital ingredient to the enjoyment and success of the trip. We camp at Dole 4040m. Dole to Machermo 4470m 3 / 4 hours walking Another quite short day as we make our way further up the Gokyo valley to Machermo 4470m. Machermo acclimatisation day We have an acclimatisation day at Machermo, and a local walk to gain height during the day is recommended, returning to spend a second night at the same altitude. This is a very important aspect of our trek and will undoubtedly assist with the success, as well as with our enjoyment of it. Day 10 Machermo to Gokyo 4790m 3 / 4 hours walking Although there is still some ascent the trail is gentle and the trek is relatively short. As we approach Gokyo we pass the beautiful lakes of Tso Mengma, Tso Palumo and Tso Rangmo, otherwise known as Dudh Pokhari. It is beside the third lake that we find the village of Gokyo where we camp for the night. Day 11 Gokyo Ri, then Gokyo to Dragnag 6 / 7 hours walking After an early start we make our way up Gokyo Ri 5360m directly above the village of Gokyo, for a magnificent panoramic vista. The view that unfolds is simply stunning. We can see from Cho Oyu in the north all the way around to Ama Dablam and beyond. Some of the best views of Everest are to be seen from Gokyo Ri. A spectacular morning spent on this summit before dropping back down to Gokyo. After something to eat we continue across the path on the Ngozumba glacier on to Dzonglha. Day 12 From Dragnag, over the Cho La Pass 5420m and on to Dzonglha 4830m 6 / 8 hours walking The Gokyo valley is separated from the Khumbu Valley by a barrier of mountains formed by Taweche 6542m, Cholatse 6440m and Lobuje 6119m. Snow conditions permitting, we will take the Cho La - a high level pass which will give us access to Dzonglha. Day 13 Dzonglha to Lobuje 4910m 3 hours walking From Dzonglha we will trek around to the Lobuje 4910m where we will rest for the afternoon. Day 14 Lobuje - Gorak Shep 5140m 3 / 4 hours walking We will follow the trail, gradually gaining height, to reach the settlement of Gorak Shep the highest gathering of teahouses in the Khumbu. From Gorak Shep we will really feel that we are in the heart of the mountains, being surrounded by Pumori 7165m, Lingtren 6749m, Khumbutse 6665m, Everest 8848m and Nuptse 7861m. We stay here for 2 nights. Days 15 Everest Base Camp 5364m 8 hours walking We have 2 days to enjoy the Base Camp & Kala Pattar area. At the foot of the Khumbu icefall is the base camp of the 1953 Everest

Expedition, a strenuous full day s walk from our camp. Day 16 Kala Pattar 5545m 4 hours walking & return to Lobuje 4910m 7 hours walking On the second day in the area we aim to reach the summit of Kala Pattar 5545m, a steep, but not difficult climb. From its summit we may enjoy uninterrupted views of Everests black south west face, almost dwarfed by its neighbouring giant Nuptse. Khumbu s tortured ice field stretches away to the south in an unbroken panorama of snow-capped mountains. We then descend back to the village of Lobuje. Day 17 Lobuje to Chukhung 4730m 4 / 5 hours walking We will leave the main Everest Base Camp trail and trek towards the Kongma La which slips through between the trekking peaks of Pokalde 5806m and Kongma Tse or Mehra Peak 5820m before dropping down towards the Imja Khola, which we will follow to Chukhung. Day 18 Acclimatisation Day We have been on the go for some time now and today is set aside as a rest day for us prior to our forthcoming summit bid. This will ensure that we are very fit and well acclimatised and will maximise our chances of success on Island Peak. Day 19 Chukhung to Island Peak Base Camp 4970m 3 / 4 hours walking We begin our trek to Base Camp along a ridge giving fine views of our mountain and a stunning panorama all round. Our goal, Island Peak, is clearly visible straight ahead, whilst we have Ama Dablam 6856m to our right and the Nuptse/Lhotse 4970m wall towering over us on the left. Day 20 Island Peak Base Camp to High Camp 5700m The summit can be attained in one long day, but we prefer to establish a high camp on the southern slopes of the mountain. The views from this enclave are simply stunning and the sense of solitude will be felt for perhaps the first time as we get away from the crowds. This strategy also means that we have more flexibility. Day 21 Summit Day 6 / 7 hour day With an early start we will be well ahead of the teams starting from Base Camp. Soon after leaving high camp we will rope up and start on the first snow slopes where will be using our crampons and ice axes. The route is fairly easy to follow and winds its way up snow gullies and rock bands before easing off to a small plateau, where we will be able to take a good rest and enjoy the first rays of dawn. Ahead of us lies a short steep slope that leads to the summit ridge, which we will follow to the summit itself. We will probably be well ahead of any other parties, having had a head start from high camp, and we can enjoy the summit and the stupendous views around us before descending back to Base Camp. Day 22 Spare Day In case of bad weather or difficulties acclimatising. Day 23 Trek to Pangboche 3901m 5 / 6 hours walking We leave Base Camp and follow our course back to the village of Pangboche 3901m with its 300 year old monastery containing wall paintings and Tibetan manuscripts. The first part of our journey is alongside the Imja Khola and through Dingboche. The impressive north face of Taweche lies died ahead as we reflect on our achievement. Day 24 Pangboche to Namche Bazaar 3440m 4 / 5 hours walking We trek to Deboche 3757m and then continue past wonderful rhododendron to Thyangboche with its monastery in a magical setting that commands Impressive shapely Ama Dablam. The scenery changes yet again as we walk through the woodlands to reach Namche Bazaar. An optional evening walk will give us our last views of Everest. Day 25 Namche Bazaar to Lukla 6 hours walking We may awake to the sound of Tibetan horns high above the village. From here the deep valley of Dudh Khosi drops away as we retrace our steps to Lukla. Day 26 Fly to Kathmandu We fly from the tiny mountain airstrip back to Kathmandu, with a last chance to glimpse the mighty snow-capped Himalaya in the distance. Overnight in our group hotel. Day 27 Free in Kathmandu A chance to do some shopping, explore at leisure or just relax by the hotel pool and reflect on your trek. Day 28 Depart Nepal Transfer to Kathmandu airport.
