Prepared By; Officer Steve Shubert, Euclid Police Dept. GAME RECAP Euclid 33, Solon 28: Rand s interception seals the victory! By Bryant Kizer, Special to the Plain Dealer October 6, 2017 EUCLID, Ohio Job Rand s big interception in the end zone helped the Euclid Panthers survive for a 33-28 high school football victory over the Solon Comets on Friday night. Solon entered the game ranked #11 in the Cleveland.com Top 25; Euclid was #12. The Panthers, who are 4-0 in the Greater Cleveland Conference and 6-1 overall, had a 27-0 lead with 11 minutes left in the third quarter. But with the high powered Solon offense, no lead is safe. The Comets (5-2, 3-1) would score the next 28 points to take a 28-27 lead with 6 minutes left in the 4 th quarter. That is a great team over there, said Euclid coach Jeff Rotsky. But we lost three key guys. The Panthers lost their starting quarterback Cee Jay Hale in the first quarter. They had to rely on backup quarterback Aubrey Shabazz. If you don t have two good quarterbacks, you will not get the job done, Rotsky said. Shabazz did a wonderful job. Shabazz calmly led his team to the game-winning touchdown. After the Comets went up 28-27, the Panthers put their final drive together. It all started with a huge kickoff return by Dre Von Lindsay that set things up for them at the Solon 30 yard line. That was huge for him, Rotsky said. He kept his head in the game and led us to the game-winning touchdown. Euclid will host Brunswick next Friday night. Euclid vs. Solon football: Aubrey Shabazz s late touchdown run leads Panthers past Comets By John Kampf, The News Herald EUCLID PANTHERS Adversity comes in all shapes and sizes. Euclid faced many of them on Oct. 6 against visiting Solon. The Panthers lost their starting quarterback to injury early in the game, blew a 27-point lead and then gave up a long drive on the final drive of the game. But between a late touchdown run by backup quarterback Aubrey Shabazzand a game-clinching interception in the end zone by Job Rand, Euclid responded to the adversities presented and came away with a 33-28 win. The win enables Euclid (6-1, 4-0) to stay atop the Greater Cleveland Conference, a half-game ahead of Mentor (5-1, 3-0) and a game up on Solon (5-2, 3-1). When you lose a quarterback, two or three others go down, you go from 27-0 to 28-27 and you still come back... said Euclid coach Jeff Rotsky, pausing and exhaling deeply. That s about as big of a game we ve had in my three years here. I m proud of these kids. The wind had been sucked out of the home team s sails when Solon quarterback J.T. Caver took a keeper 45 yards for a touchdown with a little more than five minutes left in the game. The score gave the Comets their first lead of the game, 28-27, and successfully erased a 27-0 deficit made possible in the third quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run by Euclid s Ronald Lee. But Euclid responded. After a long kickoff return by Dre Von Lindsay to put the Panthers at Solon s 30, the Panthers showed their trust in their backup quarterback, Shabazz. After two plays that netted negative-four years, Shabazz carried the ball five straight times, capping the drive with a touchdown run around right end with three minutes left for a 33-28 lead. Shabazz, who transferred from VASJ prior to the season, ran for 24 yards in the game, threw for 56, and had two touchdowns one running and one passing. I ve never been so locked in before, Shabazz said of his mindset on the final drive. I kept telling the line, We re going to win this game. It started with them. It started with the line. We just put that play in this week. That s the first time we ran it. Solon mounted a 12-play drive in the final three minutes. But on fourth down from the 25, Caver s pass to Sam Bubonics in the end zone was picked off by Rand. Euclid then knelt out the remaining time on the clock. Coach called a great coverage and I executed it, said Rand, who came over top in double-coverage on Bubonics for the interception. If not for my D-line and the linebackers doing their job, my job is not going to be accomplished. It was a big win for us. The game looked to be headed for a running clock situation at halftime. After regular starting quarterback Cee Jay Hale who was on crutches with his right knee taped tightly after the game scored on a one-yard run, Euclid had the early lead. Shabazz hit Jovan Owens for an 18-yard fade to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter, and then Brandon Wright s 17-yard run upped it to 20-0 at the half. A disappointed Solon coach Jim McQuaide lamented the rough first half, which saw his team throw three interceptions in the first 24 minutes. We were supposed to go into the game and play well and we didn t in the first half, McQuaide said. We had a responsibility to our fans and our program to play better. Euclid has a good team. I congratulate them. Behind Caver (266 passing yards, 87 rushing yards), Solon got back in the game. Caver threw touchdown passes to Grant McCurry and Trevon Raphael, Thomas Wilks shook loose for a nine-yard scoring run, and then Caver had his long touchdown run for the brief lead. Lee had 164 yards rushing to lead Euclid. Rotsky credited Shabazz for coming off the bench to pilot the team, he termed Lindsay s kickoff return to set up the gamewinning score enormous, and the late defensive stand brought a smile to his face. This is a true team win, Rotsky said. They showed pretty darn good character. This is a pretty special win tonight. Euclid s Aubrey Shabazz competes a pass against Solon
