The full day s conference took place on 26 August at Coastlands Hotel and Conference venue in Durban. This conference gave our boys, and 44 other Grade 8 learners from neighbouring schools, access to speakers and content that will add great value to their personal development. Various experts in their respective fields, such as business, entrepreneurship, sports and health, shared their insights to the attendees on how they defined their paths both in their personal lives and professional careers. After listening to the various talks, the boys were given a group task of drawing a poster called Boy meets World. They were required to base this poster on their own life experiences and those of the day s guest speakers. This activity added the learners practical involvement to the conference. A surprise half an hour bus tour of The Durban s Golden Mile was the most enjoyable experience. The boys also participated in a team building exercise towards the end of the conference. This allowed them an opportunity to interact in a creative and social way with other boys from other schools. Our boys came back victorious with certificates of participation, individual gift hampers, a chess kit and football bibs. These five lads have unanimously donated the chess kit and the football bibs to our school s thriving chess and football teams. Well done to them! Page 3 of 6 Sport Results DHS took a young side to the Pionier Sevens this year to defend the trophy they had won for the previous two years. It was an important learning curve for the younger players and a necessary exercise to ensure the DHS Sevens programme continues to be one of the best in the country. This process allowed these younger players to get a taste of top tier Sevens Rugby and orientate them to this level of play for the upcoming years. Although the tournament didn t yield the same fruitfulness as previous campaigns, this young group sporting six U16 players were able to come home with some silverware, winning the Bowl trophy in an emphatic 33-19 victory against Vryheid in the Final. The tournament began in a highly competitive manner as DHS were drawn in a group that sported some very good Sevens schools. DHS took some time to click as a new team and found themselves 23-7 down at halftime their first fixture against Wilgerivier. An inspired comeback, however, led to a last second try to claim a 33-28 victory, with Captain Lwandile Menze performing admirably throughout. The team, however, failed to build on this momentum and struggled, with losses against Noordheuwel and HS Middelburg in their next two games. After a disappointing group phase the team was determined to right their wrongs and did so by easily overcoming a Ladysmith team 45-10 in the Bowl Quarter Final. DHS marched on to the Semi Final where they played HS Middelburg again. The team turned around their previous loss and recorded a resounding 31-5 victory in the Semi Final. It was to be a tournament which will stand the DHS youngsters in good stead for the future and we are excited to watch them progress through the ranks. We were fortunate that the strong winds predicted for Friday had calmed to a perfect 10 knots and we were able to take two Pacers out with 5 crew and a skipper each. Some of the boys got a chance to skipper, others to fly the main sail and others to manage the jib when tacking - all important jobs on a keel boat which requires teamwork and good listening skills to crew effectively. With such lovely wind we were able to fully experience heeling over (the boat leaning over on its side in the water) for extended periods - nothing like sliding down a deck to teach you to pay attention! We look forward to another session of dinghy sailing on Saturday afternoon. If you are interested in joining in the fun, or even coming along to watch, please feel free to do so. The fun is happening from 12pm at the Royal Natal Yacht Club!
