2005-06 MAC Women s Basketball Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan Tabbed As MAC Women s Favorites The Mid-American Conference announced that Bowling Green (East Division) and Eastern Michigan (West Division) have been chosen as preseason favorites to win their respective divisions in women s basketball. Voting was conducted by members of the MAC News Media Association. The Falcons were also tabbed to win the MAC Tournament. MAC Preseason All-Conference Team East Division Name, School, Cl., Pos. Liz Honegger, Bowling Green, Jr., Forward Ali Mann, Bowling Green, Jr., Forward Lindsay Shearer, Kent State, Sr., Forward Malika Willoughby, Kent State, Sr., Guard Cindi Merrill, Miami, Sr., Guard MAC Fast Break West Division Name, School, Cl., Pos. Nikki Knapp, Eastern Michigan, Sr., Forward Ryan Coleman, Eastern Michigan, Sr., Guard Stephanie Raymond, N. Illinois, Jr., Guard Danielle Bishop, Toledo, Jr., Guard Carrie Moore, Western Michigan, Jr., Guard Heading East The MAC will have a shift in its makeup of divisions this year as Bowling Green will return to the East Division after being a West Division member from 2002-04. The move was made necessary with the departure of Marshall to Conference USA. The newest alignment is as follows: East Division Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami and Ohio. West Division- Ball State, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan. New Faces Two first time head coaches will patrol MAC sidelines this year with each division offering a new coach. In the West, Carol Owens returns to her alma mater at Northern Illinois from a position as an associate coach at the University of Notre Dame. Owens, who became the first-ever Huskie to garner career numbers of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds while leading the team to a No. 17 ranking in the final AP poll in 1990, helped the Fighting Irish to the NCAA Championship in 2001. The East Division welcomes Linda Hill-MacDonald as head coach, who takes over the Buffalo program from her position as assistant coach at South Carolina. Hill-MacDonald has previous head coaching experience at Temple (1980-90) and Minnesota (1990-97) in the collegiate ranks and for the Cleveland Rockers (1997-99) of the WNBA. A MAC First For the first time in MAC history, women s basketball has produced three 20-win teams three years in a row. In 2005, league champion Bowling Green and West division champion Eastern Michigan each tallied 23 victories while co-east champion Kent State had 21 wins. In 2004 Miami (22), EMU (22) and BGSU (21) reached 20-plus wins. The 2003 campaign saw three West division teams reach the 20-win plateau - Ball State (21), Toledo (20) and Western Michigan (20). Tournament Changes The Mid-American Conference Women s Basketball Tournament will be held in the same building that it has been for the past five years -- it will just have a new name. Quicken Loans Arena (The Q), formerly Gund Arena -- will be the site for the 2006 Kraft MAC Women s Basketball Tournament. This year, four teams will receive a bye -- the East & West Division Champions and the two teams that finish in second place in each diivision. First round matchups will have all cross-division matchups. All-MAC Returnees 13 of 20 All-MAC selections will return for the 2005-06 season.
