MEMBER NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2015 CONNECT WITH US!

LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dear Members, Our golf course has not suffered from a lack of rain this year. As of July 19, we have received 44.1 inches so far this year with 33.4 inches falling since May 6. Our rainfall average for the entire year is around 39 inches. Last year we received a total of 28 inches. All of this rainfall has kept our roughs thick and lush and reduced water costs, but it has presented some challenges for our greens and bunkers. The bunkers have been washed out numerous times causing silt to contaminate the sand. The greens have become too wet at times causing a flush of growth which reduces green speed and promotes disease. There are numerous turf diseases that can attack our greens and the contributing factor with all of them is moisture. This is why we aerify to keep water moving down and through our greens. The root system of greens can also be compromised with too much rain. Roots will seek out water deep in the soil during periods of drought, but when moisture is always plentiful, they will become shallow and weak. Also, the heat of summer is detrimental to Bentgrass roots since Bentgrass prefers temperatures from 60 to 80. You may have noticed that your ball marks are getting larger and deeper. This is from a lack of root mass underneath greens. Our greens will become stronger when cooler temps arrive. Thank you for keeping carts on paths whenever possible, and please repair your ball mark plus one more. See you on the course, Jason Judd Superintendent jjudd@meadowbrookcc.net Page 2
