panther notes...add one PITTSBURGH HEAD COACH Traci Waites is in her fourth season as head coach at Pittsburgh where she has compiled a 33-51 overall record. In 1999-2000, Waites orchestrated the biggest one-year turnaround in the program s history as Pittsburgh posted a 16-13 record, doubling it s win total from the prior season. In addition, Waites earned Big East Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading Pittsburgh to a sixth-place finish in the league, a vast improvement from its 12th-place finish the year before. Moreover, the Panthers were chosen to compete in the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), marking their first postseason berth in six years. Waites joined the Panthers after serving four seasons at the University of Arizona as an assistant coach, including the last two as associate head coach. While there, Waites was instrumental in the Wildcats emergence as a Top 10 program, helping them to three straight 20-win seasons and two NCAA Tournament berths. Prior to Arizona, Waites was the head coach at Santa Monica Community College in Santa Monica, Calif., from 1993-94 after serving the program as an assistant for three years. During her tenure, Waites teams finished second in the Western States Conference and qualified for the state playoffs each year. Waites enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career, first at Georgia and then at Long Beach State. She played in the NCAA Tournament each of her four seasons and went to two Final Fours. She holds the distinction of being the only player to appear in the Final Four for two different teams. BUCKNELL HEAD COACH Kathy Fedorjaka is in her fifth season as head coach of the Bison and owns a record of 61-51 for Bucknell. Fedorjaka has a nineyear overall coaching record of 128-89. Fedorjaka came to Bucknell in August of 1997 and led the Bison to a 12-14 overall record in her first year as a head coach at the Division I level. She was voted the 1997-98 Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year. A 1990 graduate of Fairfield University, Fedorjaka s arrived at Bucknell after a three-year stint as head coach at Bloomsburg University. At Bloomsburg, Fedorjaka amassed a 51-30 record, and directed her 1996-97 team to the school s first Division II NCAA Tournament appearance in five years. Fedorjaka s collegiate coaching experience began at Bucknell when she arrived in Lewisburg as a graduate assistant with the women s basketball program in 1990. PANTHERS IN THE FIELD HOUSE The Panthers hold an all-time record of 200-119 at Fitzgerald Field House. Their best season came in 1976-77 when the Panthers went a perfect 10-0, finishing with an overall record of 19-8. Last year, Pittsburgh held a 7-6 record at home compared to a 2-12 mark on the road. PITTSBURGH VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE Pittsburgh owns a 3-1 all-time record against teams from the Patriot League. Tuesday s contest marks the first of two consecutive games against Patriot League foes as the Panthers host American University on Nov. 24 at Fitzgerald Field House. Pittsburgh has never played Bucknell, but owns a 2-1 advantage over American and a 1-0 mark versus Lafayette. The Panthers have never played fellow Patriot League members Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh or Navy. SCOUTING THE BISON Bucknell returns all five starters from last year s impressive 20-8 mark, including a 9-3 secondplace record in the Patriot League. The Bison opened the season with a convincing 64-45 victory over Albany on Nov. 16. Bucknell is led by 5-10 junior guard Molly Creamer, who finished last year averaging 19 points and five assists per contest. In Bucknell s season-opening victory over Albany, Creamer picked up where she left off last season and tallied a game-best 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. SCRAPING THE GLASS Despite a 77-72 season-opening setback, Pittsburgh was able to control the boards. For the contest, the Panthers snared 42 rebounds, including 19 offensive, compared to William & Mary s 39 boards. Junior Mandy Wittenmyer led all rebounders by snagging 13, which included seven offensive. Quick Facts PITTSBURGH VS. BUCKNELL Pittsburgh, Pa.... Location... Lewisburg, Pa. 33,000... Seniors Bettina Love, Jackie Campbell and Jessica Ryndycz, juniors Mandy Wittenmyer, Laine Selwyn, Dallas Williams and Brooke Stewart and sophomore Sheila Stufflet all had major impacts on the 2000-01 campaign. Wittenmyer (12.4 points per game), Selwyn (11.4), Stewart (10.3) and Love (7.2) return to add the offensive punch for the Panthers. FRESHMAN OF INFLUENCE Pittsburgh added four new freshmen to its squad this year, including the following: #23 Jessica Allen 5-8 G Salem, CT #33 Haley Harguth 5-8 G Beaverton, OR #22 Amy Kunich 5-6 G Monroeville, PA #55 Allisha Morris 6-3 C Hampton, VA Redshirting the 2001-02 campaign due to injury STEALING THE SHOW Pittsburgh used its quickness last year to make the opposition turn the ball over. The Panthers averaged 8.19 steals per game, which ranked eighth in the Big East. Laine Selwyn led the way, ripping away 1.96 per game to place her 10th in the league. PITTSBURGH PLAYER NOTES DAZZLING DALLAS Junior Dallas Williams, who started just four games last season, was inserted into the starting lineup against William & Mary and produced for the Panthers in a major way. Williams connected on an astounding 7-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-9 free throws for a career-high 21 points. Williams previous career-best scoring output was 13 against Duquesne on Jan. 1, 2000. Her seven made field goals were also a career high. SELWYN S SWAGGER Despite its season-opening setback to William & Mary, Pittsburgh s Laine Selwyn did her part in dishing out the rock and using her quickness to get it back. Selwyn finished with team-bests of six assists and four steals. Last year, Selwyn paced the Blue and Gold in both categories. LEADING THE WAY Junior Mandy Wittenmyer has continued to establish herself as one of Pittsburgh s and the Big East s top young stars in her first two seasons. In each of her first two seasons, Wittenmyer has paced the Panthers in both scoring and rebounding. Last year, she averaged career bests with 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, topping her Big East All-Rookie team numbers of 12.1 points and 7.8 boards per game as a freshman. Currently, Wittenmyer is 16th (tied) on Pittsburgh s career rebound leaders list with 449, following her 13-board output in Pittsburgh s season opener, and is on pace to crack the top 8 by season s end. BRODERICK PROMOTED Head Coach Traci Waites has promoted former assistant coach Bill Broderick to associate head coach. Broderick is entering his fourth year as a member of the Panther staff. He worked with Waites at Arizona for three seasons and accompanied her to Pittsburgh prior to the 1998-99 year. A 1993 graduate of Frostburg State, Broderick was an assistant coach at both his alma mater and at Potomac State College before joining Waites in Arizona. WAITES RE-TOOLS STAFF Deborah Perry and Lisa Scott have been appointed assistant coaches for the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team, head coach Traci Waites announced. Perry, who most recently was a member of the University at Buffalo women's basketball staff, brings extensive coaching experience to the Panther squad and will focus primarily on recruiting. Prior to working with the Bulls for the past three years, Perry spent two seasons (1995-97) as the head coach and senior women's adminstrator at West Virginia State College. Perry also served as an assistant coach at Ohio University for four years (1991-95) and at Southern University & A&M College for three seasons (1989-91). Earning her bachelor's degree in industrial technology from South Carolina State, Perry is a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Scott, a former student-athlete under Waites at the University of Arizona, begins her first campaign as an assistant basketball coach and will focus on tutoring the Panther guards. A four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats, Scott earned honorable mention All-Pac 10 and finished her career tied for first on Arizona's all-time list for games played (112). Scott additionally finished as the Arizona and Pac-10 career leader in three-pointers made (285). Her 1,199 career points ranks among the top 20 all-time at Arizona. Scott made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the Sweet 16 as a member of the Wildcat basketball squad. She graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in communications. Additionally, Waites appointed Ron Wuotila director of operations for women's basketball. Wuotila comes to Pittsburgh with an extensive basketball background, following the completion of his master's degree in physical education/athletic administration from Idaho State University in 1992. He came to the Panthers after a nine-month stint as director of men's basketball operations at Robert Morris College where he coordinated the Tip-Off Social, with guest speaker Digger Phelps, which raised $17,000 and was involved in scheduling and public relations duties. Wuotila has an impressive head coaching resume that includes being named the Canadian College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Coach of the Year in 1999-2000 while at Mount Royal College (Canada).
