OYSTER BPLJ Ballistic Protected Life Jacket
OYSTER BPLJ Inflatable ballistic hard and soft armour vest
Technical Specification for OYSTER BPLJ INTRODUCTION The OYSTER BPLJ is described as consisting of the following sub systems: This is a Ballistic Armoured vest with an integrated automatically inflating life jacket vest to be worn while performing duties at sea. It combines the properties of a bullet resistant vest with that of a buoyancy life vest, with the life vest behind the body armour to give increased protection. It has an automatic inflatable value which activates within 3 seconds of water immersion with a standby manual operation toggle. Ballistic Plates (Front & Rear) are use in conjunction with a bullet resistant vest and the level of protection and type of plate are at the client discretion. STANDARDS APPLICABLE The Standards Applicable are as follows: A certified certificate that the soft armour will exceed American NIJ standard level 3A and give a back face trauma of no greater than 16mm with 9mm ammunition, as opposed to a 44mm deformation allowed under level 3A with an average of no greater than 9mm with 6 shots A certificate that the average deformation of a hard armour plate being when shot with 7.62 x 39m B2 (API) of Chinese origin with 5 shots under NIJ standard 0101.04 to be no greater than 7mm, as opposed to allowable deformation of 44mm, under the standard. REQUIREMENTS OYSTER BPLJ provides all round protection, which includes the region around the shoulders and side of torso in accordance to NIJ Level 3A. The general design of the OYSTER BPLJ allows the wearer to dress into the vest easily and enjoy prolonged wear with comfort. It is 100% waterproof and has buoyancy capabilities sufficient for an operator carrying a minimum load of 10kg in normal clothing.
OYSTER OUTER COVER DESIGN Consists of highly durable, breathable and waterproof design that promotes comfort and ease of movement without compromising protection Allows for easy donning and removal Be secured to the body by means of side flaps using Velcro fasteners and a central zip Front and rear pockets allow insertion of ceramic or light weight dynema ballistic plates of 10 x 12 dimension. Groin leg straps allow the operator to fasten these if required for helicopter or water recover. COLOUR Black & Colour Fast MATERIAL The outer material is made of 500 denier Cordura with a water repellent outer coating and an anti-fray inner coating. Fabric is breathable and waterproof and suitable for use in tropical climate and incorporate an effective moisture management system that allows for rapid evaporation. Low friction material inner panels prevent chaffing and abrasion Material are sewn from the inside so that no sharp edges cause abrasion or irritation to the wearer. OYSTER is fully washable using conventional means and most commercial detergents.
BALLISTIC PANELS DESIGN Each panel is heat sealed Is constructed of a uniform number of layers Incorporate a trauma reduction pad BALLISTIC PROTECTION Threat level is selected by the client to be either level III or IIIA in accordance with NIJ Standard 0101.04. Perceived threats are selected by the client. BALLISTIC MATERIAL Ballistic panels are to have a certificate from the Manufacturer confirming the test levels achieved. BUOYANCY Flotation of a minimum buoyancy of 170N upon inflation Has self-righting properties The life jacket to be contained behind the body armour
AUTOMATIC INFLATOR SPECIFICATIONS MATERIALS BODY & CASE Are gas filled nylon for good impact strength at low temperatures and good chemical resistance FIRING MECHANISM Has good chemical resistance and good Dimensional stability at high and low temperatures FIRING INDICATORS Has a visibility indicator and low cost replacement indicator parts. Perceived threats are selected by the client. PERFORMANCE DURABILITY The firing unit has passed 300 hours accelerated weathering to US Coastguard specification and operates automatically and manually after drop testing at 30C as required by the US Coastguard. The unit was continuously cycled through 100 automatic inflations and 100 manual inflations as required by the US Coastguard. OPERATING ABILITY This has an automatic and manual cylinder piercing capability. The unit has an average actuation time below 2 seconds in ambient conditions. The units airflow into the life jacket must exceed the US Coastguard minimum requirement of 4 litres/minute by 11 litres/minute to give a rapid inflation.
