Profit Builder Bull Sale OCTOBER 21, 2016 NOON HANCEVILLE, ALABAMA

A special thank you to our veterinarian for sponsoring the Chuckwagon luncheon. DR. BRUCE LEE, DVM 2126 2nd Ave NW Cullman, AL 35058 (256) 734-1177 The History of Drummond Sparks Beef George Grady Sparks and his son, Grady Nolan Sparks, started in the registered cattle business with 11 Hereford heifers and 15 Angus heifers in 1963 on a small farm near Jasper, Alabama. The operation was moved to a larger farm in 1969 in order to grow the registered herd under the banner of Kittiwake Farm. Most of the seedstock was purchased from Pete Ginsbach in South Dakota, R.W. Jones in Leslie, Georgia, Beartooth Ranch in Montana and Anchor X Ranch in Lampasas, Texas. The registered herds were dispersed in 1985 as the sun set on Kittiwake Farm, but were started up again in 2005 in Connerville, Oklahoma, by Grady and Connie Sparks on the 9,147-acre Sparks Ranch. The ranch raised registered Angus purchased from top breeders in Oklahoma, registered Herefords with seedstock purchased from Knollcrest Farms in Virginia, Huth in Wisconsin, Topp Herefords in North Dakota and others. Sparks Ranch also ran 800 commercial Beefmaster cows and later 500 commercial Red Angus cows. The Oklahoma cow herds were dispersed in 2010 and Grady and Connie Sparks started a small registered Hereford herd in Auburn, Alabama. Garry Drummond, a close friend of Grady s, invited Grady to take a helicopter ride to look at some strip mined reclaimed land. This land had been planted with a variety of grasses instead of pine trees, which was the normal practice. Seeing several thousand acres of grass lit a fire in Grady to return to his childhood dream of raising registered cattle in a profitable way. Today, the operation consist of 200 registered Hereford and 200 registered Angus females with the headquarters at the Cullman County ranch near Hanceville, Alabama and satellite ranches at Jasper, Alabama and Auburn, Alabama. Ron Dugger is manager of Drummond Sparks Beef and has been involved in the cattle business for over 35 years, the last 12 years in the purebred cattle industry. Ron brings extensive experience in cattle genetics and hard work to the operation. The legal entity is Drummond Mine Ranch LLC with marketing under the banner of Drummond Sparks Beef. The goal of our cattle operations is to provide the best beef genetics and support services for our customers to allow them the opportunity to realize a profit from their cattle business.

SELLING 78 PERFORMANCE BEEF BULLS 37 ANGUS & 41 HEREFORDS Welcome, As I sit down and reflect on our bull offering, I can t help but think about the process that brought you this outstanding set of stout, fertile and efficient Hereford and Angus bulls. Grady Sparks and myself had a vision for the type and kind of cattle we wanted to produce here at Drummond Sparks Beef and this set of bulls is a reflection of that vision. Our philosophy is simple, we have concentrated on traits that are going help our registered and commercial customers add profit to their operation. Profit Builder Bull Sale was the logical name for this sale, our commitment to produce cattle with low birth weight, high growth, fertility, longevity, efficiency and carcass merit is evident in this sale offering. The cattle industry is changing daily, the key to survival is to use high quality bulls and utilize all the technology available to increase the accuracy of the data available when selecting these bulls. All bulls in our offering have genetically enhanced EPDs (increasing accuracy of EPDs equivalent to a calf crop) which is an invaluable tool in selecting bulls that will help add to your bottom line, Profit. All bulls have been tested for the known genetic defects identified and tested for by each breed and are free of these known defects. We sincerely thank you for your consideration in using bulls produced by Drummond Sparks Beef, and be assured we do not take your consideration lightly and we produced and raised these bulls to make them profitable for your operation. Thank you Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen, Welcome to the Profit Builder Bull Sale at Drummond-Sparks Beef. While DSB is no stranger to selling bulls, this is a first-time event to be held at the ranch headquarters in Hanceville. It has been a pleasure and honor to have the opportunity to be a part of this inaugural event, and I want to first extend a special thanks to Grady, Connie, Ron, the Drummond family and the rest of the DSB crew for allowing me to help them market this outstanding set of bulls. This lineup features an outstanding set of Angus and Hereford bulls. This is a sound, functional set of bulls that excel in phenotype and individual performance while maintaining a strong genetic base and numerical balance and diversity. The disposition of this group of bulls is worth taking note of as well. Whether you are looking for a herd sire to use in a registered operation, a sire to promote and sell semen on, or a bull to use in your commercial operation, DSB has a bull that will meet your needs. These bulls have been developed the right way, with emphasis on maintaining soundness and maximizing fertility and longevity. Evaluate the needs of your operation and plan to join us on October 21, 2016, for this great event and don t miss the Chuckwagon dinner before the sale. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions or if I can help you in any way. Sincerely, Matt Sims Ron Dugger, Manager Drummond Sparks Beef Join us at 11:00 a.m. prior to the sale for an authentic chuckwagon prepared meal! He ranks in the top 25% or better for 13 of the 15 reported traits. He blends individual performance with excellent EPDs, flawless phenotype and conservative markings. We feel the future of this bull is unlimited. Like Lot 10, his sire, X51 is a homozygous polled, red necked and 100% pigmented on both eyes and scrotum. X51 s early progeny data is exceptional. His weaning, yearling and ribeye progeny ratios indicate that he will truly excel for these traits. X51 s greatest value should be his ability to sire highly productive females with superior udder quality. We selected him along with his dam from the LaGrand program in South Dakota and he has performed superbly since. The consistency in phenotype and individual performance you can see in the paternal brothers is a testament to the job he has done in our herd on a variety of pedigrees and is an indication of how uniform the calves sired by these sons will be. These bulls should sire real world cattle that will thrive in any environment and meet the needs of all facets of the industry. 16 Sire of Lots 38-46 Drummond Sparks Beef Profit Builder BULL Sale

EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping or data edits needed for NCE. GROWTH Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving-ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. MATERNAL Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. EPDs for Carcass Weight, Marbling and Ribeye are included in this catalog. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. For the Zoetis HD 50K for Angus percentile rankings, a lower value indicates a more favorable ranking for the trait. For example, a smaller numeric percentile ranking for Zoetis result in birth weight and carcass fat indicates lighter calves and leaner carcasses as the expectation. If you are making selection decisions for traits that have an EPD provided by the Association, then the EPD should be considered the selection tool of choice. The EPD and accuracy account for all sources of information available on the animal of interest (e.g., pedigree, own record, weights/measures, genomic results). Using EPD and genomic percentiles separately leads to double counting information and will lessen selection efficiency. Profit Builder BULL Sale Drummond Sparks Beef 31

Research is ongoing to develop traits for fertility, feed intake and docility. Today, DNA-marker tests can be used to enhance the accuracy of Hereford EPDs. blends marker information with phenotypic information and pedigree to produce a GE- EPD. Look for the GE-EPD logo denoting an animal has been tested. The current suite of Hereford EPDs and $ indexes includes: Calving Ease-Direct EPD (CE), is based on calving-ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving-ease in females calving at 2 years of age. Birth Weight EPD (BW), is an indicator trait for calving-ease and is measured in pounds. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), is an estimate of pre-weaning growth measured in pounds. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), is an estimate of post-weaning growth measured in pounds. Maternal Milk EPD (MILK), The milking ability of a sire s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires daughters progeny due to milking ability. Maternal Milk & Growth EPD (M&G), reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of daughters progeny weaning weight. Calving-Ease Maternal EPD (CEM), predicts how easily a sires daughters will calve at 2 years of age and is measured on a percentage. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), is measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull s own semen quantity and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. Ultrasound measurements are incorporated into FAT EPD, REA EPD and MARB EPD, and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. Rib Fat EPD (FAT), reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. 32 Drummond Sparks Beef Ribeye Area EPD (REA), reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better-muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Marbling EPD (MARB), reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Baldie Maternal Index (BMI$), is a maternally focused index that has a production system based on 1,000-Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed toward Certified Hereford Beef (CHB ). This index is more critical of CE than the Brahman Influence Index (BII$), and also has significant weight on fertility. There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW, which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature size manageable. The emphasis of IMF is greater than the emphasis of REA. This is true because of the price difference of the Choice-Select spread and the fact that there is little incentive to produce cattle better than a Yield Grade 3. This index is geared to service commercial programs that have British-cross cows. Calving Ease Index (CEZ$), This is a general purpose index that focuses on identifying bulls that can be used on heifers and then ultimately the calves will be marketed through the CHB program. As you might expect, CE and MCE carry significant weight in this index along with fertility. There is very little weight put on growth traits and less emphasis on carcass. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$), This is a terminal sire index built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so they need to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have much more emphasis on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. It could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or are simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that nothing is retained in the herd. Profit Builder BULL Sale

Driving the science of better breeding There s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide: Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency) The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to: more accurate selection easier identification of genetic outliers the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had recorded 7-24 calves, depending on the trait. That s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed s weekly national cattle evaluation at www.angus.org. How do you know if EPDs are genomic-enhanced? Ask your breeder, refer to the registration paper, or look for the AGI GE-EPD logo or those of partnering labs Zoetis (HD50K, i50k) or GeneSeek (GGP-HD, GGP-LD).
